Breaking up is hard to do UNIT 1

We asked four people to tell us about theirTEST
worst break-ups. Their stories will amuse you -
or scare you!
UnitMelissa
John: 1 | Reading
and I were together for seven years. We were engaged, and we had set the wedding
date for next spring. I gave her a huge diamond ring - it took me almost a year to save enough
money for that ring. One day, I noticed she wasn't wearing it. She said, ''Oh, I must have left it in my
apartment.'' I asked her why she took it off in the first place. She looked very uncomfortable and
made up some excuse about not wanting to scratch it while she was cleaning her kitchen. Later that
day, we went back to her apartment with some take-out, and her kitchen was filthy. I knew she had
lied about why she took the ring off. I e-mailed her best friend to ask where Melissa was the night
before. It was pretty clear that she had been out on a date with someone else. I was heartbroken,
but I let her keep the ring. My advice: Just because you're with somebody for a long time doesn't
mean you should get married. Be sure before you make the commitment.
Francesca: I met Phil in college. He was the most fun-loving guy I had ever been around. For two
years, we were inseparable, and I think I laughed the whole time. Then my best friend, Chelsea,
asked me a question I'll never forget: ''Where do you see yourself in five years? Will you still be with
Phil?'' I realized that Phil was fun, but he wasn't relationship material. At least, not long-term; he
was more of a buddy. I thought about how often he had borrowed money from me or expected me
to pay for dinner. He was fun, but he couldn't hold down a job! I broke up with him that night. He
was so hurt; he said he would never laugh again. Every time I saw him after that, he was wearing
black and looking depressed. To this day, I worry about crushing his fun-loving spirit. I still haven't
found anyone as exciting as Phil, but I think I did the right thing. He needed to grow up, and I
needed to get serious.
Tami: Paulo and I had only been going out for a few months when the most embarrassing thing
happened. We were having a romantic dinner at my house, and all of a sudden, there was a knock at
the door. It was his parents! They barged right in and started asking me all kinds of personal

questions. ''What do your parents do for a living? Do you have any medical problems? What are
your goals for your career?'' It was crazy! I looked over at Paulo for help, and he was just sitting
there with his head down, staring at his shoes. It turns out, he hadn't told them about me yet, and
they had found out about me from one of his friends. They followed him to my house that night.
Don't get me wrong - I think it's fine to have a good relationship with your parents, and I would
have been happy to meet them in a normal way - but they went too far! I could see that Paulo would
never stand up to them. They would always rule his life. So I told him not to call me again.
Rick: I had the worst day ever. It was raining, and I had been late to work, completely soaked.
Somehow, on the way in, I had dropped my wallet. I didn't have any money for lunch. Then a bunch
of files were mysteriously deleted on my computer. I spent all day trying to recover them, but I
couldn't. At the end of the day, my boss called me into her office. She fired me! All I wanted to do
when I got home was sink into my wife's arms and tell her all my troubles. But when I got home, all
my stuff was out in the yard! It was still raining, so everything, even my best suit, was ruined. There
was a big sign on the front door: ''Rick, I want a divorce. Jenn.
'' I just turned around and went to a hotel. It was awful. Jenn said later that if she had known it was
such a bad day, she wouldn't have done it then. But she still wanted a divorce. I'm happier now
because I realize she could be a little bit cruel. Plus, she was a terrible housekeeper.
