Project description:
The successful candidate will join the Observational Cosmology group, led by Prof. Jean-Paul
Kneib at the Laboratory of Astrophysics (LASTRO). We are looking for talented and highly
motivated students, interested in the measuring and understanding the evolution of the
Universe and the underlying cosmological model. Work analysis will be using in
particular spectroscopic information for dedicated redshift surveys (SDSS-V, DESI, 4MOST),
but could also include measurements from weak lensing surveys (e.g. DES, Euclid), and radio
surveys including HI mapping (e.g. HIRAX). The goal is to take advantage of the new 3D
spectroscopic data as well as complimentary measurements to unravel the properties of our
Universe.
The ideal candidate has a strong motivation for observational astrophysical research, and has
received education in astrophysics and cosmology. Experience with data analysis, computer
programming is required. English language proficiency is expected. The position also involves
teaching duties at Bachelor or Master level.
The selected PhD student will need to enrol in the Physics program of the EPFL doctoral
school (candidate can already submit their application to the doctoral school, next DL: April
30th), and the employment runs up to a total of 4 years, assuming a successful evaluation
after the first year. Doctoral school information and employment conditions at EPFL can be
found online. Applicants are expected to hold a Master degree (or equivalent) in
(astro)physics by the start of employment.
EPFL and LASTRO are committed to excellence through diversity and wish to establish a
climate that welcomes, celebrates, and promotes respect for the contributions of all students
and employees. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without
regard to background, gender identity, national origin.
How to apply:
The application should comprise:
• Motivation letter (1 page max)
• Curriculum vitae (incl. publications, and all grades/certificates after high school)
• Contact information of at least two referees willing to write a reference letter
• Summary of research experience (2 pages max)
All documents should be concatenated in one single pdf file and sent
to estrella.briant@epfl.ch no later than June 10th, 2022. Applicants should also arrange for 2
letters of references, which have to be sent by the referees to estrella.briant@epfl.ch by June
15th, 2022.
