LAB CLASS 4

Random Blood Sugar Measurement

INTRODUCTION TO PUBLIC HEALTH 101 LAB
Spring 2022
Content
• Why it is important to have glucose in our blood?

• What is the normal level of blood glucose?

• How we can measure the glucose level?

• What is hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia? What is their importance?

• Application of blood glucose testing in public health.

Glucose
Classification of Carbohydrates
Glucose is a carbohydrate, (based on chemical structure)
essentially a monosaccharide.
Carbohydrates
Function and Importance
• Function of glucose is to produce Simple Complex
energy (4 kcal/gram)
Monosaccharide Disaccharide Polysaccharide
• Being a monosaccharide…
• Glucose can be very quickly Glucose Maltose Starches

(Glucose-Glucose)
Sucrose Fiber
• It is the only form of fuel (Glucose-Fructose)

our brain can use. (Glucose-Galactose)

Normal ranges of Blood Glucose
Normal Pre-diabetic Diabetic

≥ 3.5 mmol/L, but

Fasting 5.5 – 6.9 mmol/L ≥7.0 mmol/L
< 5.5 mmol/L

2 hours After meal ≥ 7.8 mmol/L, but

2 hours post prandial < 7.8 mmol/L ≥ 11.1 mmol/L
< 11.1 mmol/L

Random < 11.1 mmol/L ≥ 11.1 mmol/L

Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) is defined as blood sugar level < 3.5 mmol/L
Hyperglycemia (high blood sugar) is defined as blood sugar level ≥ 11.1 mmol/L
Hypoglycemia OR Hyperglycemia
Hypoglycemia is a clinical emergency condition, where the brain might stop

functioning due to inadequate supply of energy (remember, brain can only

use Glucose)
Hypoglycemia OR Hyperglycemia
On the other hand, for a healthy person, hyperglycemia is not dangerous, as

his/her body can produce enough insulin to lower the level of blood glucose

Persistent hyperglycemia would indicate a person’s inability to produce

enough insulin or functional insulin, thus the disease Diabetes Mellitus (DM)

This persistent Hyperglycemia in diabetic person can damage a lot of organs,

mainly by damaging blood vessels.

Complications of Diabetes Mellitus
Public Health Application
Screening
Finding out unrecognized disease/health risks in a group of apparently healthy,

asymptomatic population by means of tests that can be applied rapidly and easily applied.

Screening allows us to intervene and prevent the condition from becoming worse.

Normal

Pre-diabetic
Measuring Blood Glucose is an excellent screening tool
