Lesson
STATISTICS is a branch of mathematics that deals with the collection,
organization, presentation, analysis and interpretation of data. Statistics derived from
the Latin word “status” means state.
Importance of Statistics
• In economics, it helps us understand and analyse economic theories the
relationship between supply and demands, imports and exports, inflation rates,
and per capital income.
• In business, it helps managers to analyse past performance, predict future
business practices and lead organizations effectively like set prices and
respond changes in consumer demands.
• In government it helps in decision making, they must serve the need of
government for efficient administration and management as well as for longer-
term policy making.

• In medicine, it helps to determine results from experiments, clinical trials of
medicine and symptoms of diseases. Evaluate the effectiveness of newly
develop medicines.

Types of Statistics
1. Descriptive Statistics are used in collecting, presenting and interpreting of
sample data.
2. Inferential Statistics are used in making decision and conclusion.

Classifications of Data
1. Qualitative Data – refers to categorical data or descriptive attributes.
Example: gender, color, physical traits, citizenship
2. Quantitative Data – refers to numerical information.
Example: age, height, weight, score, income

GATHERING OF DATA
After determining the number of samples needed, the next step is to choose
the method on how you are going to collect the data.
Data collection is the process of getting information from a population or
sample. Data can be collected through observation, experimentation, or conducting
censuses or surveys. These data are called primary data. Data obtained from those
already published by the government, industries, or individual sources are called
secondary data.
Population is a collection of sets of people, objects, measurements, or
happenings that belong to a defined group. Sample is a subset of the population.

The following are the methods in collecting data:

a. Direct or Interview Method
➢ It is used in conducting surveys.
➢ It is done when a person solicits information from another person either
by telephone or in-person. The interviewer is the person gathering the
data, while the interviewee is the person being interviewed.
Example: A certain telecommunication company would ask a caller to rate
their services after the latter questions about her internet
connectivity.

b. Indirect or Questionnaire Method

➢ It is also used in conducting surveys.
➢ It is done by reproducing a printed questionnaire, which is a checklist of
prepared questions, and distributed to individuals needed to be studied
depending on the content of the questionnaire. The individuals then
answer the questionnaire and return it to the researcher.
Example: Customers in a restaurant were given a printed checklist to rate
the food served to them and the services provided by the crews.

They also requested to write down their feedback on the
restaurant at the end of the checklist.

c. Observation Method
➢ In this method, the researcher observes the behavior of the participants.
The investigator is the person gathering the data, while the subject is
the person being observed.
➢ It makes use of the human senses.
Example: A researcher would like to know the effect of too much water and
sunlight on certain plants.

d. Experiment Method
➢ It is used to determine the cause-and-effect relationship of certain
phenomena under controlled conditions.
Example: Researchers would make some tests to determine which vaccine
will be more effective to be immune from the virus before releasing
it to the public.

e. Registration Method
➢ In this method, information can be gathered from documents or reports
which are released by the government or any institution.
Example: The researcher will identify the number of cases, recoveries, and
deaths of COVID-19 in a day as reported by the Department of
Health (DOH).

ACTIVITIES
ACTIVITY 1:
Fill in the given table. State the population and the sample in the given statements
below.

National High School about their favorite
sports.
2. 500 high school students are being

following tasks.
a. The Favorite K-pop Artist
b. The Favorite Subject of Grade 7 students
c. Any topic which is interesting to the group and requires the collection of data
1. Identify the chosen topic of your group and explain why you have selected it.
2. Describe the population and talk about the sampling technique that your team
will use.
3. Each member of the group must gather data from at least 10 respondents.
Describe how you have collected your data and discuss any problems that you
have encountered.
4. Combine all the gathered data by the group and write your thoughts or
insights in collecting data.
