What am I required to do in this assignment?


In this assessment, you will be required to carry out a strategic analysis of a business in a designated industry sector. You will
produce a focused strategic analysis of an identified and critical aspect of the internal environment. You are required to identify
the core competencies of the company assigned and identify how they have contributed to the success of the organisation. You
need to do analysis to identify the key industry developments and their impact. You need to produce a report on whether or
not the current strategy of the company will remain appropriate in view of the changes in the industry and the success of the
current strategy. Your report must make use of reliable evidence and appropriately selected methods of evaluation. You are
also required to identify the strategic position and value proposition of the company. Your recommendations (meaning
whether or not the company should continue with its current strategy) should be based on:
 Strategic analysis of an identified and critical aspect of the internal environment.
 Evidence from a range of sources about the industry and about whether the company's existing strategy is successful.
 Use appropriate criteria to assess whether the current strategy will remain relevant as the industry changes
 Whether a change of strategy will be possible or desirable

How does assignment relate to what we are doing in scheduled sessions?


The aims of the unit are to promote understanding of the importance of the role of strategy in organisational success. It aims to
develop your understanding of the importance of choice in the design of effective strategy through which it is possible to
create a unique value proposition and to enable firms to avoid direct win-lose competition.
To achieve this, you will be enabled to develop your ability to work through complex issues to identify both current and future
trends and to assess their potential impacts on both the industry and the business. You will also be enabled to make a careful
selection of the appropriate tools, frameworks, and concepts of strategy to assess the appropriateness of strategies and by
doing so develop a range of realistic and practical strategies for businesses.
The unit focuses primarily on competitive strategy and therefore you will concentrate on these key themes:
 Strategy as choice
 Identifying trends and their potential impact on the business
 Understanding the importance of resources and capabilities in the implementation of strategy

This Unit particularly focuses on the development of your abilities in the following areas:

Businesses operate in dynamic environments and offer problems that are often
unstructured and poorly defined. In order to successfully develop strategies, you
must develop your ability in effective inquiry through which you can make realistic
Enquiry judgments about likely scenarios for future industry and developments making use
of a range of sources and evidence and from this develop a range of potential
strategic options.

The Strategic Management unit will enable you to develop an ability to analyse
complex situations, evaluate the success of company’s strategies and to make
recommendations about the strategic options available to businesses and to
recommend and choose the strategic direction for businesses. Of importance in this
unit is the understanding of the impact of the firm’s operating environment, the
Contextual drivers of change that may impact upon this environment and how firms develop
understanding and manipulate their resources to gain an advantage over their competitors. Above
all, you will be encouraged to develop the ability to think strategically. The strategy
is a fascinating and complex area of business and it is one that requires an
intelligent and appropriate use of the theories and frameworks to which you will be
introduced within this unit.

Throughout the unit, you will have the opportunity to collaborate in workshops in
the solving of problem-based questions and questions related to strategic issues.
Often you will be required to work in small groups in the seminars to discuss and
resolve problems many of which will require pre-reading. In seminars and
Collaboration workshops, you will also develop your communication skills, in presenting your
analyses and arguments. Your learning will be enhanced by the interaction you have
with your peers as well as with your tutor and the knowledge, skills, experiences,
and perspectives that they can bring to the learning environment.

Enterprise in this context is taken to mean developing the ability to analyse complex
and often unstructured issues and through this analysis develop the ability to
