How the ‘Sandwich’ Got Its Name
A sandwich is a popular food. It is a combination of bread or pastry filled with meat or

cheese and dressed with condiments.
The name “sandwich” has long been associated with an Englishman, John Montague ,
who was the 4th Earl of Sandwich. Montague planned a 24-hour long gambling session. He was
so addicted to his gambling habit that he did not want to stop for meals. He recalled a trip to
Mediterranean where he saw slices of bread with meat served by Greeks and Turks. So, John
instructed his cook to prepare his food that way.
The cook presented him with sliced meat between two slices of toast. It was exactly how
John wanted it to be as this meal required no utensils. He could eat with one hand while leaving
the other hand free to continue with the game.
John Montague made the simple meal popular among the people of his time. Soon, the
idea spread and people started to call the simple meal-sandwich.
