 What is Life…?
Worldly life is temporary and the life hereafter is permanent.

‫ث أَﻋْ ﺟَ بَ ا ْﻟ ُﻛﻔﱠﺎرَ َﻧﺑَﺎ ُﺗ ُﮫ ُﺛ ﱠم َﯾﮭِﯾ ُﺞ‬

ٍ ‫اﻋْ َﻠﻣُوا أَ ﱠﻧﻣَﺎ اﻟْﺣَ ﯾَﺎةُ اﻟ ﱡد ْﻧﯾَﺎ َﻟﻌِبٌ َو َﻟﮭْوٌ َوزِ ﯾ َﻧ ٌﺔ َو َﺗﻔَﺎ ُﺧ ٌر َﺑ ْﯾ َﻧ ُﻛ ْم َو َﺗﻛَﺎ ُﺛ ٌر ﻓِﻲ ْاﻷَﻣ َْوالِ َو ْاﻷ َْو َﻻ ِد َﻛ َﻣﺛَلِ ﻏَ ْﯾ‬
ِ‫ﷲ َورِ ﺿْ َوانٌ َوﻣَﺎ اﻟْﺣَ ﯾَﺎةُ اﻟ ﱡد ْﻧﯾَﺎ إ ﱠِﻻ َﻣﺗَﺎ ُع ا ْﻟ ُﻐرُور‬
ِ ‫ﺷدِﯾ ٌد َوﻣَﻐْ ﻔِرَ ةٌ ﻣِنَ ﱠ‬
َ ٌ‫َﻓﺗَرَ اهُ ﻣُﺻْ ﻔ ًَّرا ُﺛ ﱠم َﯾﻛُونُ ﺣُطَ ﺎﻣًﺎ َوﻓِﻲ ْاﻵﺧِرَ ِة ﻋَ ذَ اب‬
:20) ‫)اﻷﻋراف‬.

Know that this worldly life is no more than play, amusement, luxury, mutual boasting, and
competition in wealth and children. This is like rain that causes plants to grow, to the delight of
the planters. But later the plants dry up and you see them wither, then they are reduced to chaff.
And in the Hereafter there will be either severe punishment or forgiveness and pleasure of Allah,
whereas the life of this world is no more than the delusion of enjoyment.

(Quran 57:20,Khattab,2018)

Meaningful life
A meaningful life is to obey Allah Almighty and live a life that is linked to eternal life on one hand and
achieve existential meaning from worldly goals and ethical virtues on the other. Meaningful life
includes the goodness of both worlds.

ِ‫َو ِﻣ ْﻧ ُﮭ ْم ﻣَنْ َﯾﻘُول ُ رَ ﱠﺑﻧَﺎ آ ِﺗﻧَﺎ ﻓِﻲ اﻟ ﱡد ْﻧﯾَﺎ ﺣَ ﺳَ َﻧ ًﺔ َوﻓِﻲ ْاﻵﺧِرَ ِة ﺣَ ﺳَ َﻧ ًﺔ َوﻗِﻧَﺎ ﻋَ ذَ ابَ اﻟﻧﱠﺎر‬

:201) ‫( اﻟﺑﻘرة‬

And there are men who say: "Our Lord! Give us good in this world and good in the Hereafter, and
"!defend us from the torment of the Fire

(Quran 2:201,Ali,1985)

 Why am I here?

‫ا ﱠﻟذِي ﺧَ ﻠَقَ ا ْﻟﻣ َْوتَ َواﻟْﺣَ ﯾَﺎ َة ﻟِ َﯾ ْﺑﻠ َُو ُﻛ ْم أَ ﱡﯾ ُﻛ ْم أَﺣْ ﺳَ نُ ﻋَ ﻣ ًَﻼ َوھ َُو اﻟْﻌَ زِ ﯾ ُز‬
‫ض ﺧَ ﻠِﯾۡ َﻔ ً َﺔ‬
ِ ‫ا ِۡذ ﻗَﺎل َ رَ ﱡﺑ َك ﻟِﻠۡ ﻣَﻠٰ ٓـ ِﺋ َﻛ ِﺔ ِاﻧ ۡﱢﻰ ﺟَ ﺎﻋِ ل ٌ ﻓِﻰ ۡاﻻ َۡر‬
‫اﻟْﻐَ ﻔُو ُر‬
(30: ‫)اﻟ َﺑﻘَرَ ة‬

Behold, thy Lord said to the angels: "I will create
He who created death and life to test you as to
a vicegerent on earth. which of you is best in deed. He is the Almighty,
(Quran 2:30,Ali,1985) the Forgiving,
(Quran 67:2,Kaskas,2016)
Purpose of life in Islam

Life is highly and significantly purposeful, The purpose of creation for all humankind is to
.recognize Allah Almighty and worship Him

‫َوﻣَﺎ ﺧَ َﻠﻘْتُ ا ْﻟﺟِنﱠ َو ْاﻻِﻧْسَ ا ﱠِﻻ ﻟِﯾَﻌْ ُﺑد ُْو ِن‬

.I did not create jinn and humans except to worship Me

‫ﷲُ ﻋَ َﻠ ْﯾ ِﮫ َوﺳَ ﱠﻠ َم ﻗَﺎل َ اﻟدﱢ ﯾنُ اﻟﻧﱠﺻِ ﯾﺣَ ُﺔ ﻗُ ْﻠﻧَﺎ ﻟِﻣَنْ ﻗَﺎل َ ِ ﱠ ِ َوﻟِﮑِﺗَﺎ ِﺑ ِﮫ َوﻟِرَ ﺳُوﻟِ ِﮫ َو ِﻷَ ِﺋ ﱠﻣ ِﺔ‬
‫ﻋنْ َﺗﻣِﯾ ٍم اﻟدﱠارِ يﱢ أَنﱠ اﻟ ﱠﻧﺑِﻲﱠ ﺻَ ﻠﱠﯽ ﱠ‬
‫ا ْﻟﻣُﺳْ ﻠِﻣِﯾنَ َوﻋَ ﺎ ﱠﻣ ِﺗ ِﮭ ْم‬
Tamim al-Dari reported the Prophet (May peace be upon him) as saying; Religion conduct;
religion consists in sincere conduct. The people asked; to whom should it be directed,
Messenger of Allah? He replied :
To Allah, his book, his Apostle, the leaders (public authorities) of the believers and all the
believers, and the leaders (public authorities) of Muslim and the Muslims and the Muslims
in general.

‫ﺷﻌُو ۭ ًﺑﺎ َو َﻗﺑَﺂ ِﺋل َ ﻟِﺗَﻌَ ﺎرَ ﻓ ُٓوا۟ ۚ إِنﱠ أَﻛْ رَ َﻣ ُﻛ ْم‬
ُ ‫َٰ ٓﯾﺄ َ ﱡﯾﮭَﺎ ٱﻟﻧﱠﺎسُ إِﻧﱠﺎ ﺧَ َﻠ ْﻘ َٰﻧﻛُم ﻣﱢن ذَ ﻛ ۢ ٍَر َوأ ُﻧﺛ َٰﻰ َوﺟَ ﻌَ ْﻠ َٰﻧ ُﻛ ْم‬

‫ﻋِ ﻧدَ ٱ ﱠ ِ أَ ْﺗﻘَﯨٰ ُﻛ ْم ۚ إِنﱠ ٱ ﱠ َ ﻋَ ﻠِﯾ ٌم ﺧَ ﺑِﯾ ٌر‬.

(13:‫)اﻟﺣﺟرات‬
O men! Behold, We have created you all out of a male and a female, and have made you into nations and
tribes, so that you might come to know one another. Verily, the noblest of you in the sight of God is the one
who is most deeply conscious of Him. Behold, God is all-knowing, all-aware.
(Quran 49:13,Asad,1980)

‫ﷲ ﻣَنْ أَﺣْ ﺳَ نَ إِﻟَﻰ ﻋِ ﯾَﺎﻟِ ِﮫ‬ ِ ‫ اﻟْﺧَ ﻠْقُ ﻋِ ﯾَﺎل ُ ﱠ‬:َ‫ﷲُ ﻋَ َﻠ ْﯾ ِﮫ َوﺳَ ﱠﻠم‬
ِ ‫ﷲ َﻓﺄ َﺣَ بﱡ اﻟْﺧَ ﻠْقِ إِﻟَﻰ ﱠ‬ ِ ‫ ﻗَﺎل َ رَ ﺳُول ُ ﱠ‬:‫ﻋَ ن ﻋﺑد ﷲ ﻗ ََﺎﻻ‬.
‫ﷲ ﺻَ ﻠﱠﻰ ﱠ‬
Creation is God’s family( i.e creation is dependent on God for their sustenance) so the most beloved of
creation to God is he who is kind to his family.
( Mishkat ul Masabeeh, Hadith 4998 (

Unity in Life (Tawhid) and its impact
Muslim is required to submit himself completely to the will of Allah in
all his affairs.

َ‫ﺳﻛِﻲ َوﻣَﺣْ ﯾَﺎيَ َو َﻣﻣَﺎﺗِﻲ ِ ﱠ ِ رَ بﱢ اﻟْﻌَ ﺎ َﻟﻣِﯾن‬

ُ ‫ﻗُلْ إِنﱠ ﺻَ َﻼﺗِﻲ َو ُﻧ‬
(162: ‫)اﻷﻧﻌﺎم‬
Say, “Surely my prayer, my worship, my life, and my death are all for Allah
Lord of all worlds.
(Quran 6:162,Khattab,2018)

Tawhid’s impact on Governance

‫إِ ِن ا ْﻟ ُﺣ ْﻛ ُم إ ﱠِﻻ ِ ﱠ ِ أَﻣَرَ أ ﱠَﻻ ﺗَﻌْ ُﺑدُوا إ ﱠِﻻ إِﯾﱠﺎهُ ذَ ﻟِ َك اﻟدﱢ ﯾنُ ا ْﻟ َﻘ ﱢﯾ ُم‬

(40: ‫)ﯾُوﺳُف‬

Judgment [as to what is right and what is wrong] rests with God alone, [and] He has
ordered that you worship none but Him. This is the true faith, though most People do not
realize it.

(Quran 12:40,Kaskas,2016)

 Tawhid’s impact on Financial matters

(‫ﺳ ُْورَ ةُ اﻟﻧﱢﺳَ ﺎء‬:29) ‫اض ِﻣ ْﻧ ُﻛ ْم‬

ٍ َ‫ﯾَﺎأَ ﱡﯾﮭَﺎ ا ﱠﻟذِﯾنَ آ َﻣﻧُوا َﻻ َﺗﺄْ ُﻛﻠُوا أَ ْﻣ َوا َﻟ ُﻛ ْم َﺑ ْﯾ َﻧ ُﻛ ْم ﺑِﺎ ْﻟﺑَﺎطِ لِ إ ﱠِﻻ أَنْ َﺗﻛُونَ ﺗِﺟَ ﺎرَ ًة ﻋَ نْ ﺗَر‬

Believers, do not consume one another's possessions wrongfully, not even if It is a trade with
.mutual consent. Do not kill each other, for God is Merciful-to-all of you

(Quran 4:29,Kaskas,2016)

Tawhid’s impact on administrative justice

َ‫ﷲ َﯾﺄْ ُﻣ ُر ﺑِﺎﻟْﻌَ دْ لِ َو ْاﻹِﺣْ ﺳَ ﺎ ِن َوإِﯾﺗَﺎءِ ذِي ا ْﻟﻘُرْ ﺑَﻰ َو َﯾ ْﻧﮭَﻰ ﻋَ ِن ا ْﻟﻔَﺣْ ﺷَﺎءِ َوا ْﻟ ُﻣ ْﻧﻛَرِ َوا ْﻟﺑَﻐْ ﻲِ َﯾ ِﻌ ُظ ُﻛ ْم ﻟَﻌَ ﱠﻠ ُﻛ ْم ﺗَذَ ﱠﻛرُون‬
َ ‫إِنﱠ ﱠ‬

(90: ‫)اﻟﻧﱠﺣْ ل‬

Allah enjoins to do justice and to adopt good behavior and to give relatives (their due
rights), and forbids shameful acts, evil deeds and oppressive attitude. He exhorts you, so
that you may be mindful

‫ﷲُ ﻋَ زِ ﯾ ٌز ﺣَ ﻛِﯾ ٌم‬
‫ﷲ َو ﱠ‬
ِ ‫َواﻟﺳﱠ ﺎرِ قُ َواﻟﺳﱠﺎرِ َﻗ ُﺔ ﻓَﺎﻗْطَ ﻌُوا أَ ْﯾ ِد َﯾ ُﮭﻣَﺎ ﺟَ زَ ا ًء ِﺑﻣَﺎ ﻛَﺳَ ﺑَﺎ َﻧﻛ ًَﺎﻻ ﻣِنَ ﱠ‬

(38: ‫)اﻟﻣَﺎﺋِدَ ة‬

As for male and female thieves, cut off their hands for what they have done—a deterrent from
.Allah. And Allah is Almighty, All-Wise

(Quran 5:38,Khattab,2018)

‫ﷲ‬
ِ ‫اﻟزﱠ ا ِﻧ َﯾ ُﺔ َواﻟزﱠ اﻧِﻲ ﻓَﺎﺟْ ﻠِدُوا ُﻛل ﱠ َوا ِﺣ ٍد ِﻣ ْﻧ ُﮭﻣَﺎ ﻣِﺎ َﺋ َﺔ ﺟَ ﻠْدَ ٍة َو َﻻ َﺗﺄْﺧُذْ ُﻛ ْم ِﺑ ِﮭﻣَﺎ رَ ْأ َﻓ ٌﺔ ﻓِﻲ دِﯾ ِن ﱠ‬
:2)‫( اﻟﻧﱡور‬
As for the adulteress and the adulterer flog each of them with a hundred stripes, and let not compassion
with them keep you from [carrying out] this law of God, if you [truly] believe in God and the Last Day;
and let a group of the believers witness their chastisement

ٌ‫ﺷﯾْطَ ﺎ ِن إِ ﱠﻧ ُﮫ َﻟ ُﻛ ْم ﻋَ د ﱞُو ُﻣﺑِﯾن‬

‫ت اﻟ ﱠ‬
ِ ‫ﺳﻠْمِ ﻛَﺎ ﱠﻓ ًﺔ َو َﻻ َﺗ ﱠﺗ ِﺑﻌُوا ُﺧط َُوا‬
‫ﯾَﺎأَ ﱡﯾﮭَﺎ ا ﱠﻟذِﯾنَ آ َﻣﻧُوا ادْ ُﺧﻠُوا ﻓِﻲ اﻟ ﱢ‬
(208: ‫) اﻟ َﺑﻘَرَ ة‬
O believers! Enter into Islam wholeheartedly and do not follow Satan’s footsteps. Surely
he is your sworn enemy.

‫ﺿﻼل ﻣﺑﯾن‬
Indeed Allah did confer a great favor upon the believers when He sent among them a messenger from
among themselves, reciting to them the Revelations of Allah, and purifying them, and teaching them the
Scripture and Wisdom, although before that they were in manifest error. Aali ‘Imran 164
‫ﻟﻘد ﻣن ﷲ ﻋﻠﻰ اﻟﻣؤﻣﻧﯾن إذ ﺑﻌث ﻓﯾﮭم رﺳوﻻً ﻣن إﻧﻔﺳﮭم ﯾﺗﻠو ﻋﻠﯾﮭم آﯾﺎﺗﮫ وﯾزﻛﯾﮭم و ﯾﻌﻠﻣﮭم اﻟﻛﺗﺎب و اﻟﺣﻛﻣﺔ و‬
‫إن ﻛﺎﻧوا ﻣن ﻗﺑل ﻟﻔﻲ ﺿﻼل ﻣﺑﯾن‬
(164: ‫) آلِ ﻋِ ﻣْرَ ان‬

Indeed, Allah has done the believers a ˹great˺ favour by raising a messenger from among
them—reciting to them His revelations, purifying them, and teaching them the Book and
wisdom. For indeed they had previously been clearly astray.
(Quran 3:164,Khattab,2018)

(23: ‫)ﺳ ُْورَ ة اﻟﻔُرْ ﻗَﺎن‬
The worshipers of the Merciful-to-all are those who walk upon the earth with
humility, and when the ignorant address them, reply with "peace.
(Quran 25:63,Kaskas,2016)

Benevolence
َ‫ﷲُ ُﯾﺣِبﱡ ا ْﻟﻣُﺣْ ﺳِ ﻧِﯾن‬
‫َوا ْﻟﻛَﺎظِ ﻣِﯾنَ اﻟْﻐَ ﯾْظَ َواﻟْﻌَ ﺎﻓِﯾنَ ﻋَ ِن اﻟﻧﱠﺎسِ َو ﱠ‬
(134:‫)ﺳ ُْورَ ة آلِ ﻋِ ﻣْرَ ان‬
Who restrain anger, and pardon (all) men;- for Allah loves those who do good
(Quran 3:134,Ali,1985)

Patience:
ِ‫َو َﻟﻣَن ﺻَ ﺑَرَ َوﻏَ ﻔَرَ إِنﱠ ذَ ﻟِكَ َﻟﻣِنْ ﻋَ زْ مِ ْاﻷُﻣُور‬
(43:‫ﱡورى‬
ٰ ‫)ﺳ ُْورَ ةُ اﻟﺷ‬

As for him who endures patiently and forgives, that is a sign of real resolve.
(Quran 42:43,Kaskas,2016)

Discipline:
‫ﺻﻼَ َة ﻛَﺎﻧَتْ ﻋَ ﻠَﻰ ا ْﻟﻣ ُْؤ ِﻣﻧِﯾنَ ِﻛﺗَﺎﺑًﺎ ﻣ ْﱠوﻗُوﺗًﺎ‬
‫إِنﱠ اﻟ ﱠ‬
(103: ‫)ﺳ ُْورَ ةُ اﻟﻧﱢﺳَ ﺎء‬
Indeed, performing prayers is a duty on the believers at the appointed times.
(Quran 4:103,Khattab,2018)

Fairness Equality
‫اﻋْ ِدﻟُوا ھ َُو أَﻗْرَ بُ ﻟِﻠ ﱠﺗﻘ َْوى‬
(8: ‫)ﺳ ُْورَ ةُ اﻟﻣَﺎﺋِدَ ة‬
Be just! That is closer to righteousness.
(Quran 5:8,Khattab,2018)

Commitment
‫ﯾَﺎأَ ﱡﯾﮭَﺎ ا ﱠﻟذِﯾنَ آ َﻣﻧُوا أ َْوﻓُوا ﺑِﺎ ْﻟ ُﻌﻘُو ِد‬

Be true to your covenants

َ ‫ﯾَﺎأَ ﱡﯾﮭَﺎ ا ﱠﻟذِﯾنَ آ َﻣﻧُوا ا ﱠﺗﻘُوا ﱠ‬
(9:‫)ﺳ ُْورَ ةُ اﻟﺗ ْﱠوﺑَﺔ‬
O you who believe, fear Allah, and be in the company of the truthful
(Quran 9:119,Usmani,2006)

‫ت ذَ ا ا ْﻟﻘُرْ ﺑَﻰ ﺣَ ﱠﻘ ُﮫ َوا ْﻟﻣِﺳْ ﻛِﯾنَ َواﺑْنَ اﻟﺳﱠ ﺑِﯾلِ َو َﻻ ُﺗﺑَذﱢ رْ َﺗ ْﺑذِﯾرً ا‬
ِ ‫َوآ‬
(26: ‫)ﺳ ُْورَ ةُ اﻹِﺳْ رَ ا‬
Give to close relatives their due, as well as the poor and ˹needy˺
Fulfill Rights travellers. And do not spend wastefully.
(Quran 17:26,Khattab,2018)

ْ‫ﷲ ﺻﻠﻰ ﷲ ﻋﻠﯾﮫ وﺳﻠم " ﻣَنْ ﺳَ رﱠ هُ أَنْ ُﯾﺑْﺳَ طَ َﻟ ُﮫ ﻓِﻲ رِ زْ ﻗِ ِﮫ َو ُﯾﻧْﺳَ ﺄ َ َﻟ ُﮫ ﻓِﻲ أَﺛَرِ ِه َﻓ ْﻠﯾَﺻِ ل‬
ِ ‫ ﻗَﺎل َ ﻗَﺎل َ رَ ﺳُول ُ ﱠ‬، ٍ‫"رَ ِﺣ َﻣ ُﮫ ﻋَ نْ أَﻧَس‬
Kindness to Anas reported the Messenger of Allah saying : Anyone who is pleased that his sustenance is
relatives expanded, and his age extended should do kindness to his near relatives.
(Sunan Abi Dawud 1693)

ُ‫" ﻣَنْ ﻛَﺎنَ ﯾ ُْؤﻣِنُ ﺑِﺎ ﱠ ِ َوا ْﻟﯾ َْومِ اﻵﺧِرِ َﻓﻼَ ﯾ ُْؤ ِذ ﺟَ ﺎرَ ه‬  َ ‫ ﻋَ ِن اﻟ ﱠﻧﺑِﻲﱢ ﺻﻠﻰ ﷲ ﻋﻠﯾﮫ وﺳﻠم ﻗَﺎل‬،َ‫ﻋَ نْ أَﺑِﻲ ھُرَ ﯾْرَ ة‬،
Good neighborly Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet said, "Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, should
relations not hurt his neighbor

Summary
The Islamic concept of life is natural, realistic, and highly purposeful as man is the viceroy
of Allah Almighty. This position demands that he should be obedient to Allah. It
establishes a true relationship between man and this world. According to the Islamic
concept of life, the world is not a thing to be hated and abandoned, nor a thing to fall in
love with to be lost in its luxuries. Islam provides all means and powers necessary for living
progressing step by step. Tawhid is a revolutionary concept and establishes the essence of
the teachings of Islam. It means that there is only one supreme Lord of the universe. The
Islamic concept of Tawhid is the foundation of Islam, which shows the impacts on personal
and social life. Islam provides specific guidelines and principles comprehensively for all
walks of life.
