Activity 1

Direction: Listen closely to a short speech given by President Duterte.

Ask somebody from your household to read it for you.

In his speech at the oath-taking

ceremony of new Armed Forces of the
Philippines (AFP) and Philippine
National Police (PNP) officers, Duterte
teased his audience for “believing” in
the threat of the disease.
Duterte enjoined the public last
month to not believe everything they
see about the disease online.

“Maging maingat at ‘yung mga impormasyon na importante na manggaling sa

WHO, ay ating pakinggan. At huwag makinig diyan sa mga haka-haka (Be
very vigilant and only listen to the information given by the World Health
Organization. Don’t believe hearsay),” he said.

“Sa gobyerno kayo nakatutok. Nandiyan ang totoo sa gobyerno, wala diyan sa
mga taong haka-haka na wala namang ginawa kung hindi manakot para
kapwa niya tao (Listen to the government because the truth is with the
government. Not with those who only want to sow fear and panic),” he added.

Why the lack of trust on the vaccine?

ISN'T it everyone's wish this 2021 for the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) to
go away so we can resume our lives? So why is there a lot of talk about not
trusting the vaccines that are set to be rolled out later this year?

Another reason is how the government is not answering the questions on

two vaccines they are acquiring. Aside from Pfizer and AstraZeneca, the
government has negotiated for Sputnik V vaccine from Russian's and
CoronaVac from China's Sinovac. These two vaccines have not been subject
to peer review, and only have press releases to back their claim of high efficacy.

Concerns about vaccine safety are true and legit. That is why members of
the Philippine medical community are speaking out. They say what is needed
is to be transparent, to communicate, explain, and make people understand
how vaccines work. Explain that all vaccines do have side effects, but the
benefits outweigh the negatives. They admit this coronavirus and the vaccine
are new ground, but these values can save lives. To do that is to listen to
science, and not to salesmen, and that will help us make a better choice.

Let Us Study

How do we listen? What do we listen for?

Activity 2: Listen! Listen!

Study this picture. What does it show?

A program is held to welcome the Grade 7 students of St. Michael

Academy. Mrs. Lorna Bartolome, the principal, is one of the speakers.

1. What do you think is the school principal talking about? Why did you say
so?

___________________________________________________________________________
___________________________________________________________________________

You are about to hear the talk given by Mrs. Bartolome. Listen closely
to details and determine the purpose of her speech. To do this, let us study
first the different learning styles.

5
Activity 3: Listening is more than Hearing!
Before going to the next activity, let us learn the different ways
on how we should listen.

According to the Merriam-Webster Online

Dictionary, Listening is “to hear something with
thoughtful attention.” Listening is more than receiving
audio data.
It is the process of receiving, constructing meaning
from, and responding to a spoken and/ or non-verbal message (International
Reading Association)
Have you ever been accused of “selective hearing” … you know the process
that happens when you don’t want to hear something. To some degree,
selective hearing is real. There are different ways we listen.

Here are some listening styles.

1. Appreciative Listening -listening for pleasure and enjoyment, as when

we listen to music, to a comedy routine, or an entertaining speech describes
how well speakers choose and use words, use humor, ask questions, tell
stories, and argue persuasively.

2. Emphatic Listening -listening to provide emotional support for the

speaker, as when a psychiatrist listens to a patient or when we lend a
sympathetic ear to a friend
* focuses on understanding and identifying with a person’s situation,
feelings, or motives -there is an attempt to understand what the other person
is feeling
* listener does not necessarily agree or feel the same way with the speaker
instead understand the type and intensity of feelings the speaker is
experiencing without judgment.

3. Comprehensive/ Active Listening -listening to understand the

message of a speaker, as when we attend a classroom lecture or listen to
directions for finding a friend’s house
* focuses on accurately understanding the meaning of the speaker’s words
while simultaneously interpreting non-verbal cues such as facial expressions,
gestures, posture, and vocal quality.

*Steps in Active Listening

1. listening carefully by using all available senses
2. paraphrasing what is heard both mentally and verbally
3. checking your understanding to ensure accuracy
4. providing feedback

6
4. Critical/ Analytical Listening -listening to evaluate a message for
purposes of accepting or rejecting it, as when we listen to the sales pitch of a
used-car dealer or the campaign speech of a political candidate. It focuses on
evaluating whether a message is logical and reasonable asks you to make
judgements based on your evaluation of the speaker’s arguments.

how important giving thanks is. Then give your opinion by answering the
questions below.

A Thanksgiving Meal
I am honored to share this Thanksgiving meal
with the people I love and care for most in this world.
This is just another occasion for me to express my
gratitude for everything that each of you has done in
my life. I would not be who I am today without the care
and passion for teaching me how to have a happy life,
free of worries and complications.
My dear parents, the
contribution that you have done to
shape my personality is immense and I
cannot express how blessed I am for
having you comfort and support me.
You have been my role-models since
little, inspiring me to do things beyond
my potential, making me eager to

Let Us Reflect

Listening is the ability to accurately receive and interpret messages in

the communication process.

If there is one communication skill you should aim to master then it is

listening.

Spend some time thinking about and developing your listening skills –
they are the building blocks of success.

Good listening skills also have benefits in our personal lives, including:
A greater number of friends and social networks, improved self-esteem
and confidence, higher grades at school and in academic work, and even
better health and general well-being.

15
Listening serves a number of possible purposes, and the purpose of
listening will depend on the situation and the nature of the communication.
Source: © 2011 - 2021 SkillsYouNeed.com
https://www.skillsyouneed.com/ips/listening-skills.html

While good speech and communication skills are crucial in daily life,
listening skills are just as important because you wouldn't be able to
understand what others are trying to convey to you without the ability to
listen.

There are many distinct types of listening, and when we chat, listen to
music and learn new knowledge, each style is used every day.

When your listening style is inappropriate

for the situation, setting and purpose, problems
occur. Learn to listen in the way that is
appropriate for the moment and you can change
selective hearing into selective listening.

Michelle Obama’s Best Advice for students

Who are you going to be and if you'll

you about how you plan to live your life every

don't get that job? You had your heart set on
for all of you who are going to be teachers,
what are you going to do if the students in
your class next year just don't respond to

For all of you going into business, how will you react when your boss gives
you when a goal that feels way too high?

See, these are the moments that define us, not the day you get the promotion,
not the day you win teacher of the year, but the times that force you to claw and
scratch and fight just to get through the day, the moments when you get knocked
down and you're wondering whether it's even worth it to get back up. See, those are
the times when you got to ask yourself, who am I going to be? And I want to be clear.

This isn't just some vague platitude about building character. In recent years,
we've actually been seeing a growing body of research that shows that skills like For
instance, West Point cadets who scored high on things like grit and determination
were more likely to complete basic training than those who ranked high on things
like class rank SAT scores and physical fitness. So what we're seeing is that if you're
willing to dig deep, if you're willing to pick yourself up when you fall, if you're willing
to work and work until your weaknesses become your strengths, then you'll develop
a set of skills that you can mold and apply to any situation you encounter, any job
you might have in a crisis you might confront.

But you got to make that choice. And let me just share just a little secret
before I end. As someone who has hired and managed hundreds of young people over
the course of my career, whether it was during my time as a lawyer, as an
administrator, as a university, a nonprofit manager, even now as first lady, I have
never once asked someone I was interviewing to explain a test score or a grade in a
class never. I have never once made a hire just because someone went to an Ivy
League school instead of a state school. Never.

What I have looked for is what kind of person you are. Are you a hard worker? Are
you reliable? Are you open to other viewpoints? Have you stepped outside of your
own self-interest to serve others? Have you found a way to serve our country, whether
in uniform or in your community? Again and again, I have seen that those are the
qualities that I want on my team because those are the qualities that move our
businesses and schools and our entire country forward.

And just understand this. Those are the qualities that you all already embody.
They're the values you learned from your parents, from the communities you grew
up in. And today, more than ever before, that's what the world needs.

"We have learned to love ourselves, so now I urge you to 'speak

yourself.'”

Remarks by BTS' Kim Nam Jun (RM) at the launch of Generation Unlimited, at the UN General

Assembly
24 September 2018

As prepared for
delivery.
"Thank you, Mr.
Secretary General, UNICEF
Executive Director,
Excellencies and distinguished
guests from across the world.
"My name is Kim Nam
Joon, also known as RM, the
leader of the group BTS. It’s an
incredible honour to be invited
to an occasion with such
significance for today’s young generation.
"Last November, BTS launched the “Love Myself” campaign with UNICEF,
building on our belief that “true love first begins with loving myself.” We have
been partnering with UNICEF’s #ENDviolence program to protect children and young
people all over the world from violence.
"Our fans have become a major part of this campaign with their action and
enthusiasm. We truly have the best fans in the world!

"I would like to begin by talking about myself.

"I was born in Ilsan, a city near Seoul, South Korea. It’s a beautiful place,
with a lake, hills, and even an annual flower festival. I spent a happy childhood there,
and I was just an ordinary boy.
"I would look up at the night sky in wonder and dream the dreams of a boy. I
used to imagine that I was a superhero, saving the world.

"In an intro to one of our early albums, there is a line that says, “My heart
stopped…I was maybe nine or ten.”
"Looking back, that’s when I began to worry about what other people thought
of me and started seeing myself through their eyes. I stopped looking up at the stars
at night. I stopped daydreaming. I tried to jam myself into molds that other people
made. Soon, I began to shut out my own voice and started to listen to the voices of
others. No one called out my name, and neither did I. My heart stopped and my eyes
closed shut. So, like this, I, we, all lost our names. We became like ghosts.
"I had one sanctuary, and that was music. There was a small voice in me that
said, ‘Wake up, man, and listen to yourself!” But it took me a long time to hear music
calling my name.
"Even after making the decision to join BTS, there were hurdles. Most people
thought we were hopeless. Sometimes, I just wanted to quit.
"I think I was very lucky that I didn’t give it all up.
"I’m sure that I, and we, will keep stumbling and falling. We have become
artists performing in huge stadiums and selling millions of albums.

"But I am still an ordinary, twenty-four-year-old guy. If there’s anything that

I’ve achieved, it was only possible because I had my other BTS members by my side,
and because of the love and support of our ARMY fans.
"Maybe I made a mistake yesterday, but yesterday’s me is still me. I am who I
am today, with all my faults. Tomorrow I might be a tiny bit wiser, and that’s me,
too. These faults and mistakes are what I am, making up the brightest stars in the
constellation of my life. I have come to love myself for who I was, who I am, and who
I hope to become.
"I would like to say one last thing.
"After releasing the “Love Yourself” albums and launching the “Love Myself”
campaign, we started to hear remarkable stories from our fans all over the world,
how our message helped them overcome their hardships in life and start loving
themselves. These stories constantly remind us of our responsibility.
"So, let’s all take one more step. We have learned to love ourselves, so now I
urge you to “Speak yourself.”
"I would like to ask all of you. What is your name? What excites you and makes
your heart beat?

"Tell me your story. I want to hear your voice, and I want to hear your
conviction. No matter who you are, where you’re from, your skin color, gender
identity: speak yourself.
"Find your name, find your voice by speaking yourself.
"I’m Kim Nam Joon, RM of BTS.
"I’m an idol and an artist from a small town in Korea.

"Like most people, I made many mistakes in my life.

"I have many faults and I have many fears, but I am going to embrace myself
as hard as I can, and I’m starting to love myself, little by little.
"What is your name? Speak Yourself!"
