The Simple Present Tense

1. One of the usages of The Simple Present is to express actions that when perform on a
daily basis. This verb tense is also used to express habitual actions. That means: we don’t
perform them daily but we perform them regularly.

Study these examples:

A. I study English every day.

B. I play soccer every Sunday.

2. The auxiliary verbs of the Simple Present are: DO and DOES.

3. Study the usage of the auxiliary verbs.

Personal Pronoun Auxiliary Verb

I Do
You Do
He Does
She Does
It Does
We Do
You Do
They Do

4. When a sentence or question doesn’t have a verb to be or a modal, it is always necessary

to use an auxiliary verb.

5. The Simple Present Tense with I, You, We, You and They:

Study these examples:

Bob and Tom study English at CABS.

Do they study English at CABS?
Yes, they do.
No, they don’t.
Yes, they study English at CABS.
No, they don’t study English at CABS.

As you can notice, in the example above, the verb ‘study’ is the same in the interrogative,
in the affirmative and in the negative answers. That means: In the Simple Present
Tense, with the personal pronouns I, You, We, You and They, the verb will suffer NO
changes. It will always be in the BASE FORM.

More examples:

Study these examples:

Janet works at a bank.

Does Janet work at a Bank?
Yes, she does.
No, she doesn’t.
Yes, she workS at a Bank.
No, she doesn’t work at a Bank.

As you can notice, in the examples above, the verb ‘work’ is the same in the interrogative
and in the negative. That means: the verb doesn’t suffer any change and will always be in its
base form.

HOWEVER, in the affirmative we have to add a S at the end of the verb. So, we deduce
that: When we speak or write a sentence in the AFFIRMNATIVE in the Simple
Present, subjects He, She or It, all verbs will have to have an S or ES or IES at the end
of it according to its ending.

Marcelo teaches English here.

The Simple Past Tense

The verbs in the past are divided in regular and irregular verbs.

67
CABS- CENTER OF AMERICAN AND BRITSH STUDIES
Name:_________________________________ Date:__/__/____

Regular verbs:

The regular verbs are those that end with – ED.

e.g. to work – worked to live – lived

to study – studied to stay – stayed
to look – looked to visit – visited

Irregular Verbs

Irregular verbs don’t follow any rule and because of that, to study and remember them the
student has to memorize a list of irregular verbs.

e.g. to eat – ate to drink – drank

to see – saw to think – thought
to write – wrote to read – read

The use of the auxiliary verb ‘DID’.

While in the simple present, there are two auxiliary verbs ( Do and Does ), in the simple past
there is just one – DID.

Study these examples:

Mary ate an apple yesterday.

Did Mary eat an apple yesterday?
Yes, she did.
No, she didn’t.
Yes, she ate an apple yesterday.
No, she didn’t eat an apple yesterday.

As you can observe by looking at the example above, the auxiliary verb did is present only
in the interrogative and in the negative form.
Because we don’t use the auxiliary verb did in the affirmative answer, we have to conjugate
the verb in the past. In the interrogate and negative forms the verb will remain in its base
form.
Study these examples:

Peter visited his parents last week.

Did Peter visit his parents last wee?
Yes, he did.
No, he didn’t.
