Bio-profile of Gauri Shankar Gupta

Born in small town of AJITGARH in the State of


Rajasthan, India on July 15, 1956, Mr. Gupta spent his
childhood in a rural milieu. He did his schooling from
the local government school. He did well in his
academic career and stood first in the Order of Merit at
the Secondary and Higher Secondary School
Examinations in the State of Rajasthan and was
awarded gold medals by the State Board. He was also
selected for the National Scholarship which is awarded
to a very few selected students.

In 1973, he moved to Jaipur and joined the University of Rajasthan for his
higher studies. He did his Bachelor in Commerce in 1976 and Masters in
Management in 1978. Once again, he stood first in the Order of Merit at the
University and was awarded Gold Medals both at B.Com. and MBA
examinations. Four gold medals in a row remains an unbroken record till date.

Soon after Masters in Management, Mr. Gupta served in a private sector


bank for a period of three years. During this period, he also completed the
course of the Institute of Company Secretaries of India and became Member of
the Institute. In 1980, he appeared for the Indian Civil Services Examinations
and was selected for the Indian Foreign Service in July 1981.

As part of his diplomatic assignments, Mr. Gupta served in Indian


Missions in Belgium, Bangladesh and Bahrain as Second Secretary/First
Secretary. During his posting in Delhi, he served in the Economic and Finance
Divisions of the Ministry of External Affairs as Deputy Secretary. Subsequently,
Mr. Gupta served as Deputy Chief of Mission in Indian Embassy in Mexico and
as Deputy Permanent Delegate of India to UNESCO, Paris.

During his assignment with Indian Mission to UNESCO, Mr. Gupta also
served as Alternate Member of India on the Executive Board of UNESCO.
Subsequently, he was posted as Minister, Embassy of India, Manila from
January 2001 to April 2003. From June 2003 till September 2006, Mr. Gupta
served as Ambassador of India to Mongolia. From October 2006 to February
2010, Mr. Gupta headed the Establishment Division (Administration) in the
Ministry of External Affairs of India.

Subsequently, from April 2010 to August 2013, Mr. Gupta served as


Ambassador of India to Hungary and Bosnia & Herzegovina. Since October 2013
Mr. Gupta has been serving as High Commissioner (Ambassador) of India to
Trinidad and Tobago, Commonwealth of Dominica, Montserrat and Grenada.

Mr Gupta is also a writer and a poet. In 2007, his book titled “Mongolia:
The Land of Blue Skies” and in 2008, his book “Droplets”, a compilation of
English poetry were published. His next publication came out in 2010 in the form
of collection of Hindi poetry titled “Chand Lamhe”. His fourth book titled
“Unraveling Mysteries of Life – Modern Science and Ancient Wisdom” was
published in 2012 both in English and Hungarian. This book is based on
extensive research on fundamental issues of human life both from the
perspective of modern science and ancient wisdom. The book has received
extremely good reviews around the world and has been translated and published
in Czech and Romanian languages. Translations in Hindi and Bhasha Indonesia
are under way. Mr. Gupta has also contributed many articles on foreign policy
and other issues in professional journals. He has presided over several academic
conferences and seminars and has participated in many international
conferences. Some of his talks and speeches are available at YouTube –

The following international honours have been bestowed on Mr. Gupta:

1. Ambassador of the Club of Budapest.


2. Amicus Curiae Medallion by the President of the Curia, Hungary.
3. Hungarian Government wishes to confer Commander’s Cross of the Order
of Merit of Hungary (Civil Division).
4. Kabir Samman by Adharsila World Hindi Meet 2013.
5. Silver Star of Peace by the Mongolian Foundation for Peace & Friendship.

Ambassador Gupta has travelled widely to over 80 countries. He speaks


English, French and Spanish apart from Hindi and Rajasthani. He also has
working knowledge of Sanskrit and Bengali. He is a sportsman and plays golf,
tennis and table tennis. More details of his contributions are given in the following
