GECETH-18 – Ethics

Submitted by:
Olermo, Jolly Aldyn C.

Dr. Marissa R. Operario
Plastic surgery has become a common issue in the society even up until now. This
procedure is commonly used by celebrities, public figures, and even people who have the
capability to have it. Because of their popularity, people tend to criticize and we often hear
comments from other people who are strongly disagreeing with the idea of it. Some criticisms
are irrationally argued for they solely think of the fakeness of a particular part that went through
a plastic procedure.

In year 2019, some 11.36 million plastic surgery procedures were carried out around the
world according to data from the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery or ISAPS.
This means that as the world innovates, people are more aware and open to the various purpose
of plastic surgery.

I have interviewed three persons who are interested regarding this issue with questions
provided as follows:
1. What is your position on the idea of having plastic surgery?
2. Why do you think some people tend to have plastic surgery? Do you think their reasons are
valid?
3. What can you say to those people who are against to it?
4. Would you consider having one? If yes, which part of your body would you like to change?

The respective interviewees are asked with questions previously provided.

1. What is your position on the idea of having plastic surgery?

- if that surgery will make yourself feel better, go for it. As long as
you pay and responsible for it. Sometimes, having plastic surgery isn’t
about enhancing different parts of the body, it’s also for physical
health. Accidents that causes large impact is an example.
- I'm having second thoughts about this idea because I think it can be
good but also can be bad too. Because plastic surgery might give some
people 2nd chance when they experience something bad because of some of
their body parts. But I think it is also a bad idea since plastic
surgery is I think has its limitations, and can give bad effects on some
people too.
- Having plastic surgery is not all about how it looks in our physical
body but it also appears on our self-confidence and self-satisfaction.
2. Why do you think some people tend to have plastic surgery? Do you think their
reasons are valid?

- As long as surgery will satisfy and boost their confidence on what

they do, it’s valid.
- Just like what I've mentioned above, maybe because of such bad
experiences they tend to change some part of their body, to enhance and
maybe to improve their confidence.
- Yes. Because some people wants to look more beautiful and confident in
our body.
3. What can you say to those people who are against to it?

- I won’t blame them. We have different perspective in life. Just

don’t close doors and try something new in life.
- I can't lie that having plastic surgery is a really risky idea to do.
That's why some people say it's not a good idea because the
unauthenticated features added to your skin, can cause you bad sooner or
later.
- Don't judge people by having plastic surgery because it's their choice
and they want to be more confident
4. Would you consider having one? If yes, which part of your body would you like to
change?

-Yes. I might have my ears and nose done if possible.

- I don't think I needed one because I'm already thankful for the body
I've owned since then.
- No. Because I am contented of what I have right now because that's
god's made.

REACTION/CONCLUSION

We can clearly conclude that each interviewee has her own point of view and position
with regards to the idea of having plastic surgery. There were questions asked which they all
approved to the validity of this procedure. By analyzing their answers to the questions given, we
can state that they are open and aware about this issue.

This issue is covered by Bioethics in Applied Ethics which is concerned with health and
medical issues. According to research, patients with critical illness, those seeking cosmetic
improvement, and other transplantation, among others, are all treated by plastic surgeons. These
doctors are frequently faced with major ethical challenges as a result of the diversity and
complexity of patients they treat. Weighing the risks and benefits of elective cosmetic surgery in
otherwise healthy people and obtaining informed consent, devising a moral strategy for
marketing aesthetic surgery, determining a fair price to charge for services not covered by
insurance, and addressing concerns about identity and the risks of transplantation are all common
plastic surgery ethical dilemmas.

Different perspective and opinions would certainly arise from different persons. Some
might agree or be against to something and some might be neutral. Others may find it beneficial
and other may see it as unessential and not safe. Nevertheless, having plastic procedure is a
choice. Just like other things, having this kind of surgery normally has its own risks and rewards
depending on the responsibility and knowledge one has.
