STRESS ON HIGH-SCHOOL STUDENTS

ABSTRACT

Every day that passes in the school year, as the students enter their classes, the

researchers observed that they have a hard time complying with the set first courses. With that,

they thought of trying later classes to solve this said problem. They thought of this because they

had their classes at 8:30 for grade 11 and 7:30 for grade 12 in the first semester, they realized

that the hour interval between both the semester time-ins made a significant impact to both the

students and the teachers.

With that, they conducted this research entitled “8:30 Classes as Combat to the Arising

Sleep Deprivation and Stress on High-School Students.”

The main objective of this exploration is to serve as an aid and push for the said

implementation of 8:30 as the earliest classes and time-in here in our country.

Alongside this, the study also discussed the perspectives of the students regarding the

said implementation. From here, the researchers knew that the respondents agreed and are in

favor of the said enactment. Moreover, as the study took place, they realized that having the 8:30

classes are more about better effects that further leads to the development of both the schools and

the students.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

“No one who achieves success does so without acknowledging the help of others. The

wise and confident acknowledge this help with gratitude.” -Alfred North Whitehead

The researchers believe that it is right and just to firstly express their sincerest gratitude

and thanks to our Lord God for the favoring blessings which was and will forever be showered

upon us. Without His guidance and knowledge, none of these would be presented nor thought of.

After all, He is the author of all things either living and not that exists.

Secondly, next to Him are our dearest parents who never gave up and continuously

supported us throughout everything we have been through. We are indeed indebted to them for

they raised us up with love and encouragement. Moreover, we would like to extend to them our

special thanks for cheering us up and giving us the hope and will to fight in our journey in life.

Third, the people who helped us finish this research with such ease. Furthermore, we

would like to extend our gratitude to them for they are a huge part of this study.

To those people who helped us in revising, checking, and doing the whole research, to the

ones who stayed up late with us through the whole process, know that we appreciate your

presence and efforts.

And lastly, to sum it all up, to our respondents, our classmates, our friends, and our

teachers, we thank you for all the help and aid which you shared with us through the struggles

and hardships we encountered. We share this victory and achievement together. Kudos to us for

a job well done!

STRESS ON HIGH-SCHOOL STUDENTS

CHAPTER I

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

In the Philippines, it has been a norm to start the classes at 7:30 a.m. or earlier than that.

As for how (Ghaz, 2016) explained it, here in our country, almost all the public and private

schools are starting their classes earlier than 8:30. More likely, 7:15-7:30 is the allotted time for

flag ceremonies in the morning and is succeeded by the first subject or period. So usually, 8:30 is

already allotted for the second-period subject. Despite this norm, some pieces of literature still

show that having later classes is better than having it as early as 7:30, which is the basis up until

now.

Overall, this research hopes and aims to provide an assist for the implementation of the

8:30 classes here in the Philippines. Given the pieces of literature and facts, the researchers stand

with this implementation for the good of every student, teacher, and parent, which will benefit in

this said accord.

Therefore, having this research as to how it is, the readers will then understand that it

does not only aim to persuade but, it also aims to inform through showing the effects of having

early classes and contrasting them with having the later ones.

Indeed, there are a variety of ideas and suggestions one can give regarding this topic, and

so, it took the interest and curiosity of the seekers. It took them to the point and knowing that this

given accord will become one of the most significant changes not only them, but other scholastic

people will soon face.

ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST CATHOLIC SCHOOL, INC.

10 | 8:30 CLASSES AS COMBAT TO THE ARISING SLEEP DEPRIVATION AND
STRESS ON HIGH-SCHOOL STUDENTS

The researchers believe that upon this said change, the problems which arise during the

period of having the 7:30 basis classes will decrease and slowly fade away as the increasing and

developing starts to prosper.

According to (Merriam-Webster, 2020), stress is a constraining force or influence: such

as a physical, chemical, or emotional factor that causes bodily or mental tension and may be a

factor in disease causation.

Alongside this, the researchers also searched for the meaning of sleep deprivation.

According to the same source (Merriam-Webster, n.d.), being sleep-deprived means not having

enough sleep.

After knowing the meaning of both words, the researchers then conclude that stress and

sleep deprivation are things that will meddle with the continuation and process of this research.

Furthermore, these two are some of the main reasons which took the emotions and will of the

researchers to continue this study.

The analysts wanted to give their utmost effort to give the benefit of this study to the

students, teachers, and of course, the dearest parents.

Therefore, provided the aims, background, and reasons for choosing this topic, it is clear

to know that the researchers made this study to enhance the minds of the citizens further and to

give proper knowledge and understanding of what this accord can bring and what it is.

STRESS ON HIGH-SCHOOL STUDENTS

Statement of the Problem

Gathering data and knowledge about the impact and effects of the early classes to the

students, teachers, and parents will help the researcher know whether 8:30 classes will be an

effective answer to the arising problems due to this said norm.

The following questions are made in order to be the guide in this analysis:

1. What is the tendency that the implementation will be taking place in our country?

2. What may happen after the implementation? Will it decrease the rising stress and sleep

deprivation among the students?

3. What can this proposed accord bring to the economy? Will it help the economy soar high

or remain stagnant?

The researchers made this study to provide aid further and deliver the comfort of those

who will benefit in this said accord. The further results and findings of this study will overall be

provided and given to the following group of people below:

Significance of the Study

• Government

This study shall provide help in opening their minds and showing them that this

implementation will not be proposed to teach the students to slack off. Instead, to give them the

time to rest and regain the energy and strength they lost from thinking, studying, and doing extra-

curricular activities. Moreover, this shall also serve as a persuasion for them to pass the said bill.

12 | 8:30 CLASSES AS COMBAT TO THE ARISING SLEEP DEPRIVATION AND
STRESS ON HIGH-SCHOOL STUDENTS

• School Administration

The results of this research shall also benefit the School Administrators by helping them

adjust to the situation in the means of providing such information and data on how they shall

handle and manage the environment, and the students themselves. In terms of private schools,

this shall serve as a help for the to further discuss whether they shall implement the later starting

school time or not.

• Teachers

The further passing of the implementation shall help the teachers to have more time in order

to prepare for their discussions, editing of PowerPoints, and more time to internalize with the

topic. Furthermore, this shall also help them teach much fluently, having the students with their

full interest to learn.

• Parents

This study shall also benefit the parents as it can increase their time to prepare for their

children’s needs, such as food and their school supplies. The further implementation will also

give them more time to sleep, knowing that classes will start a little later or at exactly 8:30 a.m.

• Students

With this research, the implementation can at least be pushed through in the court, which will

decide whether to push it through or not. The students shall also benefit knowing that their

classes will be delayed until 8:30, giving them the pleasure of sleeping until 6 a.m. therefore,

decreasing the percentage and chance of having and developing stress.

• Future Researchers

This research study shall provide help for future researchers by providing such information

obtained in the research itself and the data gathered.

Scope and Delimitations

The scope and focus of this study are for the thought of pushing the implementation

through until it is passed. The study itself includes the effects of stress and sleep deprivation,

advantages, and disadvantages of having early classes, and the contrasting of both starting times.

Moreover, this study is delimited only for the Senior High-School students in St. John the

Baptist Catholic School.

The study, as what is stated above, includes the effects, advantages, and disadvantages of

early and later classes, provided data about these were only used as support rather than having

them as the main thought itself.

More likely, this study will be focusing more on whether the said implementation will be

a great combat to the arising problems faced by the students, teachers, and parents or not.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

Review of Related Literature

To assist in this study is the article according to (Diana Zuckerman, n.d.), stating that

having a morning or early classes does affect one person’s state. In support of this provided

information, lies the article, according to (Education Commission of the States, 2017), which

explains further how having these early classes deprive the students of having a sufficient sleep.

Deadlines, project submissions, examinations, and assignments are some of the reasons stated

why students tend to sleep later than their standard time of sleep, plus the fact that sleeping

schedules vary as one person starts to undergo the puberty stage, sleep deprivation does arise.

Moreover, according to (Daily Titan, 2014), this lack of sleep will further decrease their

productivity, therefore ending up with poor academic performance.

Overall, with these articles, it is proven that having early classes has its advantages but is

overpowered by its disadvantages.

Furthermore, knowing that the disadvantages are more likely to be seen than the

advantages, the articles according to (Nolan, 2014), (Andersen, 2019), and (Philippine Basic

Education, 2013), pushes and supports the fact of having it a little later than the norm. These

articles also generally stated facts about the impacts of having the classes delayed, and that it

showed positive results not only for the academic performances of the students but also for their

overall well-being and health. Generally, these pieces of literature show how great the change

can bring not only for this economy but in the future of the citizens.

15 | 8:30 CLASSES AS COMBAT TO THE ARISING SLEEP DEPRIVATION AND
STRESS ON HIGH-SCHOOL STUDENTS

All in all, in the accordance to this study, the petitions of (Fredeluces, 2019) and

(Triangia, 2019), with the aid of the articles of (Roxas, 2019), and (Ghaz, 2019), which aims to

state the reasons why this implementation should take place here in our country, in consideration

of the said effects and impacts, wishes to continue pushing the hearing of this proposed accord.

Review of Related Studies

In line with this research is the study of (Shahmohammadi, 2011), which supports the

aims of this study by stating that stress is intertwined with our daily lives. According to the said

study, stress does not end with meanings from the dictionary nor only from the word ‘stress’

itself, but a lot deeper than that. Stress, as they said, is something which most of the Teenagers

face in their everyday life in school. To support this is the study according to (Maria Guadalupe

Acosta-Gomez, 2018), which states that stress more likely arises from school works, especially

during examinations.

Moreover, according to the study of (M. Maajida Aafreen, 2018), this so-called stress can

affect the academic performance of a student. Furthermore, the research also stated that students

then have a hard time coping up with the environment, knowing that stress may have taken them

up. Together with this, it also stated that there is an excellent possibility of the linkage between

sleep deprivation and stress itself.

Withal, the studies according to (Judith Owens, Katherine Belon, & Patricia Moss, 2010)

and (Kyla Wahlstroom, 2014), further explained that delaying the overall starting school time

can have a significant impact not only on one person’s academic performance, but also on their

behavior, mood, and health. Therefore, realizing that there is a chance of decreasing the stress

levels and sleep deprivation across the academic environment.

The academic performance, moods, behavior, and well-being of a student which can be

referred to as the overall state, is affected and dependent on the school starting time (which

considers the sleep deprivation and stress of the students.)

Assumptions of the Study

As of now, the chance of implementing the said 8:30 classes is still pending, but at least,

we can say that it is a little closer to reality than how it was before. After all, change is a difficult

thing to adapt to after knowing, that 7:30 has been the norm for Filipino students ever since.

Students often sleep later at night due to projects, assignments, and activities which are

given by the teachers. Yes, they lack the sleep because they do their projects a day before the

submission but, they cannot be fully blamed. They are still teenagers who more likely wants to

enjoy and have a good time rather than study for the whole day.

This study further presumes that the data gathered will help support the pushing of the

implementation through the process, and that the said bill will soon be passed and implemented

in our country.

Moreover, it presumes that once the implementation takes place, there enters the change

and decreasing number of students who are suffering from sleep deprivation and stress. Overall,

this research aims to change the said norm and slowly, this shall aid the arising problems which

most of scholarly people face.

CHAPTER III

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

Research Design

This research study uses phenomenology under the qualitative type of research.

Qualitative research is mostly known to be dealing with observations and non-numerical data.

Under this are many more types, but the researchers dealt with the type of phenomenology.

The researchers used this type of research design because it is what fits the said topic

most proficiently, knowing that this study aims to have further knowledge about the experiences

and its further effects on the students’ overall well-being, and academic performance.

Data Gathering Procedure

The researchers gathered the information through having an interview with the selected

respondents.

They chose this method for gathering the data knowing that this is one of the best choices

in which they can gather more reliable information, and somewhat extract as much knowledge as

they can be based of course on the said experiences and own perspectives of the respondents

themselves towards the main topic of the said study.

Moreover, the instrument used for the data collection was in the form of a questionnaire,

wherein, the researchers chose to perform in the method of an interview where the researchers

played the role of the interviewers and the respondents as the interviewees.

19 | 8:30 CLASSES AS COMBAT TO THE ARISING SLEEP DEPRIVATION AND
STRESS ON HIGH-SCHOOL STUDENTS

Respondents

There are 15 respondents for this study. The aimed respondents of this research are the

students who are more likely to be observed by the researchers having a hard time to adapt to the

sudden change of the daily schedule as the first semester ended.

Grade 11 STEM students on one side, attended their classes at 8:30 a.m. during the 1st

semester but shifted to 7:30 as the 2nd semester entered. Grade 11 ABM students, on the other

hand, also attended their classes at 8:30 during the 1st semester but shifted to 9:30 as the 2nd

semester entered.

As for grade 12 students, they attended their classes at 7:30 a.m. during the 1st semester

but shifted to the average of 6:30 a.m. as the 2nd semester came.

In line with this, the researchers picked respondents from both the ABM and STEM

strands, knowing that they have different sets of schedules for each day of the week. They chose

13 students from the grade11 and two respondents from the grade 12 students in order to have

further clarifications about what this accord can cause considering the grade level and the strand

took.

Sampling Design

This study used the purposive sampling method in which the respondents were chosen

purposively by the researchers. They were selected because the researchers think that the soon to

be acquired data from the said interviews will provide the knowledge to answer the listed

questions which the researchers wanted to solve.

Ethical Considerations

The researchers firstly made the permission letter, which obtains the signature of the

researchers themselves, the department coordinator, and the teacher-in-charge of the subject

itself. The letter also includes the contacts and some personal information of the researchers so

that the respondents could reach out when some conflicts arise with the performed interview and

study.

Secondly, they explained the title so that they will have a glimpse of the study itself.

After that, the researchers asked the questions written on the questionnaire, which was checked

ahead of time, considering it is ethically proper to know that it does not harm the respondents,

avoids wrong messages and that it does not contain biased questions. The respondents were not

forced nor bribed to answer the questions which were asked. Instead, they responded voluntarily.

Lastly, the researchers vowed to use the gathered data for research purposes only and not

for other matters. They also ought to treat the provided data with the utmost confidentiality,

privacy, and anonymity as a respect to the respondents themselves.

CHAPTER IV

PRESENTATION, ANALYSIS, AND INTERPRETATION OF DATA

Content Analysis

Respondent 1

The said respondent agrees with the implementation of the 8:30 classes.

Moreover, he/ she explained that the disadvantages of 7:30 classes might vary per

individual, which means that some may have different problems from what others have.

According to the respondent, the students frequently lack sleep because of the early class and late

sleeping schedule caused often by project making, assignments, and other school activities,

which lead to the decreasing factor of their academic performance.

The respondent also further explained that not all students are in the luxury of living near

the school, wherein, the students who live farther away are in need and are forced to wake a lot

earlier and adjust their routine to be on time for their first subject period.

Withal the respondent agrees with the implementation of the 8:30 classes, he/ she further

explained that he/ she agreed because, as what is seen in his/ her experience, it would pretty

much be comfortable and beneficial not only for the students but, for other scholastic people.

Respondent 2

The said respondent similarly agreed with the said implementation of the 8:30 classes

here in our country.

ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST CATHOLIC SCHOOL, INC.

22 | 8:30 CLASSES AS COMBAT TO THE ARISING SLEEP DEPRIVATION AND
STRESS ON HIGH-SCHOOL STUDENTS

According to the respondent, the 7:30 classes are inconvenient because it is too early, and

the students sometimes are not yet ready nor prepared by that time. The respondent also said that

having the classes that early can meddle and hinder their focus in learning for their focus and

concentration are pointed to rest.

Moreover, he/ she also said that more likely; the students are inclined with procrastination

or the so-called cramming. The students as what the respondent said, they do their projects and

assignments in a hurry because they do not have the luxury of time wherein, they only have a

few hours to do it. Therefore, they use the time allotted for their rest as for doing the said

schoolwork.

In line with the respondent’s agreement with the implementation, he/ she said that from

his/her experience from the previous semester wherein they had their 8:30 class start, the

respondent can say that during those times, they were much more productive and lively in

learning plus the fact that they still have the time to rest. With that, the respondent concluded that

maybe, 8:30 classes really would bring excellent benefits to the students and other scholastic

people.

Respondent 3

The said respondent agreed with the said implementation of the 8:30 classes here in the

Philippines.

The 7:30 classes may have its disadvantages, but it would discipline and teach the

students about time management, said the respondent. Some disadvantages of this said time slot

ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST CATHOLIC SCHOOL, INC.

23 | 8:30 CLASSES AS COMBAT TO THE ARISING SLEEP DEPRIVATION AND
STRESS ON HIGH-SCHOOL STUDENTS

are that students are more likely to be absent-minded, sleepy, and tired. Because of the said

reasons, students, therefore, tend to have lower and unacceptable level grades and scores in their

academic activities and performances.

In line with the respondent’s agreement with the implementation, he/ she stated that if

ever this implementation will take place, the students will have a sleep which they lack, the

teachers will have more time to prepare for their presentation and discussion. The parents would

not anymore be obligated to wake up earlier to prepare their children’s things and clothes.

Even though the respondent agreed with the implementation, he/ she still prefers the 7:30

classes because it would be one of those things which will help the student learn and grow with

the proper time management.

Respondent 4

The respondent similarly agreed with the said implementation of the 8:30 classes here in

the Philippines.

According to the respondent, 7:30 classes have many disadvantages. Included in the said

disadvantages are the lack of sleep and the lack of time catching up. As the respondent said, a

student goes home late; therefore, he/ she does not have much time for the fact that there are still

household chores and assignments waiting to be done. Keeping in mind that a student also has an

early class the next day, of course, he/ she will take and do the tasks in the time allotted for their

rest and sleep. After all, it is only either cramming or staying up late, said the respondent. Once

ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST CATHOLIC SCHOOL, INC.

24 | 8:30 CLASSES AS COMBAT TO THE ARISING SLEEP DEPRIVATION AND
STRESS ON HIGH-SCHOOL STUDENTS

the student chooses to stay up late, there is a big chance and possibility that the student will be

out of focus the next day.

Alongside with the agreement of the respondent in the implementation of the 8:30 classes,

he/ she stated that based on his/ her experience as an ABM student wherein they also

experienced having the 8:30 classes he/ she can say that it has been very beneficial for them

especially with the fact that they have much more time to prepare.

Moreover, the respondent also admitted that he/she struggles with waking up early and

that she comes to school late most of the time because he/she needed to finish the school works

that were given the day before or a few days before. The respondent also added that having 8:30

classes will make the brain function well, knowing that the students will be in the condition to

study and learn by that time being.

Respondent 5

The said respondent also agrees with the said implementation of the 8:30 starting school

time here in our country.

For the respondent, 7:30 is too early to start the class, knowing that most of the students

are staying up late at night to do and comply with the school works and projects. Therefore, the

respondent believes that it would be hard for those students to wake up early. According to the

respondent, the brain is still stagnant and still cannot function well at that time.

ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST CATHOLIC SCHOOL, INC.

25 | 8:30 CLASSES AS COMBAT TO THE ARISING SLEEP DEPRIVATION AND
STRESS ON HIGH-SCHOOL STUDENTS

Moreover, the respondent said that during the 7:30-8:30 classes, students are more likely

to be sleepy and absent-minded; therefore, only a few students recite during those subject

periods.

Alongside with the respondent’s agreement with the implementation, he/ she stated that

8:30 starting time could be very beneficial not only for the students but also for the teachers

because they will have more time to rest. Therefore, more students will be able to answer in the

recitations, and the teachers will pretty much be pleased by the increase in satisfaction with the

student’s academic activities and performances.

Respondent 6

The respondent agrees with the idea of having classes at 8:30 in the morning.

Moreover, he/ she said that the disadvantages of 7:30 classes include the body clock of

the students, which talks about being slightly “nocturnal,” meaning they want to do other things

in the night, so, because of this, they will have a difficult time to wake up early the next day. He/

she also stated that he/ she agrees with the said implementation and said that it is okay because

they will have one more hour to prepare, and most of the students will be patronizing the bill

because of the same reason.

Furthermore, according to the respondent, 8:30 classes have many benefits to the

students, because they will not have to stay up late to meet or make the requirements as they can

do it in the morning.

ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST CATHOLIC SCHOOL, INC.

26 | 8:30 CLASSES AS COMBAT TO THE ARISING SLEEP DEPRIVATION AND
STRESS ON HIGH-SCHOOL STUDENTS

Respondent 7

The respondent similarly agreed to the proposal of starting the classes at 8:30 in the

morning.

According to the respondent, the effects of 7:30 classes include being drowsy in the

morning, laziness, and loss of focus. The academic progression of one student may be lower than

usual. Moreover, the respondent further explained that there are two kinds of students. The first

is a night owl, and the second one is the early bird. The respondent concluded that if a student is

a night owl, that particular student may have or will be having a difficult time keeping up with

the class.

According to the respondent, the effects of 8:30 a.m. classes include more efficiency in

productivity coming from the students and an addition to their enthusiasm. Moreover, teachers

will be able to produce more productive students. Lastly, for the parents, they will have a child

who learned and is continuing to learn well.

Furthermore, the respondent stated that he/ she prefers to start the classes at 8:30 because

students will be likely to perform more productively and with enthusiasm.

Respondent 8

The respondent agrees toward the proposal of having classes that start at 8:30 in the

morning. The respondent is also in favor of having 8:30 a.m. classes because instead of starting

the classes at an earlier time, students will be able to focus on their preparation for the school and

the activities that they need to do. Moreover, with this also, the students can rest longer.

27 | 8:30 CLASSES AS COMBAT TO THE ARISING SLEEP DEPRIVATION AND
STRESS ON HIGH-SCHOOL STUDENTS

According to the respondent, the effects of 7;30 a.m. classes are the distance of the

students to the school itself because some come from far places, so they are in need to wake up

earlier and with that follows the effect of sleep deprivation.

Moreover, the respondent prefers to have 8:30 a.m. classes because of the different

effects of it, which are the convenience for the students and them to have a more flexible time

regarding themselves and their academic performance as well.

Respondent 9

The said respondent agrees with the implementation of 8:30 as the earliest classes here in

the Philippines.

According to the respondent, he/ she is a victim of the said 7:30 classes because having it

as early as that makes it very disadvantageous to students, especially those students who live

farther away. They are obligated to adjust the routine to arrive at school on time. Once the

student failed to comply with the time, they receive consequences such as an R.I.R, the

respondent said.

In line with the fact that the respondent agreed with the said implementation, he/she also

stated that it would be a big help, especially for students like him/ her, for they will have more

time to prepare their things.

Moreover, the said respondent also stated the fact that they had 8:30 classes during the

first semester and that they were much productive, including the teachers. Therefore, all in all,

the respondent preferred to have the 8:30 classes than 7:30.

28 | 8:30 CLASSES AS COMBAT TO THE ARISING SLEEP DEPRIVATION AND
STRESS ON HIGH-SCHOOL STUDENTS

Respondent 10

The said respondent similarly agreed with the proposed implementation of the 8:30

classes.

The respondent said that 7:30 classes are tough to comply with. First, it is hard to rise

because it is too early. Second, many students live farther away than the others, therefore leaving

them hopeless, and needless to say, they are obligated to comply with the time. Third and last,

students are more likely to be sleepy and drowsy; therefore, they lose the focus and concentration

in learning, the respondent added.

Moreover, he/ she also mentioned the experience he/ she had during the first semester,

wherein they had their class start at 8:30. He/ she also stated how it has been beneficial and

helpful for them. There will be less stress and sleep deprivation once the implementation takes

place, said the respondent.

Overall, the said respondent prefers the 8:30 classes rather than the basis, which is the

7:30 classes.

Respondent 11

The said respondent also agreed with the said implementation of the later classes here in

the Philippines.

According to the respondent, 7:30 classes are inhumane because we are all exhausted with

all the projects, assignments, activities, and other school works going on. However, still, we have

early classes, which tend the students to have lesser rest. A human’s brain does not function

correctly during those times, added the respondent.

In line with the respondent’s agreement with the implementation, he/ she further

explained that it should be implemented because, even though it is only an hour, it is still a big

help. It is still an additional hour after all. He/ she even added that as an ABM student, they had

8:30 classes in the first semester and had 9:30 classes during the second semester. Having that

experience, the respondent still stands and states that the given hour is indeed beneficial in so

many different factors and branches.

Overall, the said interviewee much prefers the implementation of the 8:30 classes rather

than sticking with the basis of 7:30.

Respondent 12

The respondent also agreed with the said implementation of the later classes here in our

country.

According to the respondent, 7:30 classes are not beneficial for the students because of so

many reasons. Some of them were started by the interviewee, such as the fact that the students’

brains are still stagnant, knowing that it is still early.

Furthermore, he/ she believes that students are not open to learning during those times, so,

more likely, the students will have no will nor interest in learning nor listening to the discussions.

Therefore, they will have lower scored in their written works, which will then further lead to the

decreasing of the satisfactory level in their academic performance and activities.

30 | 8:30 CLASSES AS COMBAT TO THE ARISING SLEEP DEPRIVATION AND
STRESS ON HIGH-SCHOOL STUDENTS

Moreover, the respondent also stated the fact that some students live farther away.

Therefore, they are much prone to being late and receiving the consequences.

Respondent 13

The respondent agrees with the proposed adjusting of classes to 8:30 in the morning.

According to the respondent, the effects of having an 8:30 class include the time

management of the students. They may have more time for themselves and boosts their overall

mood because of having proper rest before the start of the classes. It also includes the students’

freshness and energy, being more alert and attentive because of having decent hours of sleep, as

well as being able to implant the lectures and discussions to the students’ minds easier. Lastly,

having a more productive day because of proper sleeping time as well.

The respondent says that the effects of 7:30 this time are shortness of resting time

because of the earliness that they need to achieve every day and being absent-minded at times as

well.

Withal, the respondent says that they prefer to go to school at 8:30 in the morning, not

because they are lazy, but because based on their experiences beforehand, the students are more

productive when they have a proper and decent sleeping time that causes enhancement on the

learnings that the students get in the school.

Respondent 14

The respondent disagrees with the idea of going to classes at 8:30 in the morning.

31 | 8:30 CLASSES AS COMBAT TO THE ARISING SLEEP DEPRIVATION AND
STRESS ON HIGH-SCHOOL STUDENTS

According to the respondent, 7:30 classes can be both beneficial and disadvantageous to

students. Because, first, they can have their sense of punctuality, and can apply it in their daily

lives. Second, it affects their mental health as certain studies show that the human brain functions

effectively in between 8 a.m. to 2 in the afternoon.

As the respondent has said, 8:30 classes will help the students gain proper rest because of

the prevalence of academic depression and anxiety. Not only will it affect the students, but also

the teachers because of the schedule as well. Furthermore, it will also affect the students’ parents

because they are the ones who wake up early for their children to help them prepare for the

morning. Overall, it has plenty of advantages to several sectors of society.

Furthermore, the respondent says that he/ she much prefers 8:30 classes even though he/

she does not agree with the said implementation. According to the respondent, it will not, and it

does not only benefit them but, it also helps them to maintain constant mental health that will and

shall enable them to perform well, not only in school but in other activities as well.

Respondent 15

The respondent also agrees with the said implementation of the 8:30 classes here in the

Philippines.

For the respondent, it is ok to have the classes start at 7:30 because she believes that it

would make the students productive. Knowing that we are Filipinos, we are pretty much used to

staying up late, the respondent added.

32 | 8:30 CLASSES AS COMBAT TO THE ARISING SLEEP DEPRIVATION AND
STRESS ON HIGH-SCHOOL STUDENTS

Alongside the respondent’s agreement upon the said implementation, he/ she stated that it

would further help the students and give them the pleasure and luxury of time to rest and further

do the projects and school works that are given.

Furthermore, after stating the benefits for the students, the teachers, and the parents, the

respondent said that he/ she much prefers having the 8:30 classes than having the basis at 7:30.

Thematic Analysis

1.What are your perspectives about the 7:30 a.m. starting school time?

According to the conducted interviews, 7:30 classes have both positive and negative

effects on the students’ overall state. Alongside this, the respondents enumerated a few who

helped to enhance the research itself further.

On one side, some positive effects of the early classes are that the students will be

disciplined and that they will be produced as to how the respondents think. On the other side, the

adverse effects are that the students will be sleep-deprived and full of stress.

2.What do you think are the disadvantages of starting the classes at 7:30?

After the interviews, the researchers found out that there are many disadvantages to

having the 7:30 classes as to how was stated before.

Another example of the disadvantages, according to the respondents, is the fact that there

are students who come from farther places. The respondents know that living farther away can be

disadvantageous, especially when it comes to the school’s rules and regulations about late

comings.

3.What are your thoughts about the implementation of the House Bill No.569, the bill which

seeks to start classes at 8:30 a.m.?

After summarizing the interview and answers of the respondents, the researchers gathered

the information and thoughts that ended up with one idea.

According to the conducted research, it is known that 8:30 classes tend to further help the

students in having the proper rest and lesser stress. Therefore, it is something that should be set

and implemented to aid the needs and sufferings of each student and scholastic person.

4.In what way can this implementation benefit the students, teachers, and parents?

Upon the study of the interviews, it is known that the students will benefit in terms of

having more rest and time to prepare. As for the teachers, they will have more time to prepare

their PowerPoint presentations which will later be presented for the students, and that they will

have much more productive learners knowing that they will be more focused on the discussions

rather than thinking of sleep because the students already had the proper rest and sleep they need.

Lastly, for the parents, they will have more rest and time to prepare the things their child needs.

All in all, the said benefits show positive effects and impacts on all the factors and sides

affected by this study.

5. Which do you prefer best, 7:30 or 8:30 classes? and why?

Upon the observation among the answers of the respondents, it is known that almost all

of them prefer 8:30 classes than the 7;30 basis class. Only a few of them said that 7:30 is still

much preferred than the 8:30 classes.

The respondents who said that they prefer 8:30 stated that they pretty much are in favor

of this time because, based on their experiences, it has and will be beneficial for the students, the

teachers, and the parents.

Withal, the respondents who chose to stick with the basis of 7:30 stand that they are

much in favor of it because it will serve as a disciplinary action for the students, which will teach

them how to manage their time correctly.

STRESS ON HIGH-SCHOOL STUDENTS

CHAPTER V

SUMMARY, CONCLUSION, AND RECOMMENDATION

Summary of Findings

The primary objective and aim of this research were to know whether students are in

favor of the said implementation and serve as a push in the proposed accord.

After the study, it is shown that most of the students said that 7:30 classes are just too

early given the fact that some students lack sleep because of procrastination. Withal, some

students live farther away, which means that they are more exposed to having the consequences

along with the school rules and regulations about being late once they fail to comply with the

time management.

The fact that all the respondents agreed and where interested in this implementation made

the research more meaningful. They, as students, also felt the struggles and hardships of having

early classes, which hindered their overall capabilities, therefore limiting them to do their bests.

Furthermore, they believe that having the later classes can be the solution.

The most common problem faced by the students is the lack of sleep or sleep deprivation

and stress due to procrastination or the so-called cramming.

According to (Richter, 2015), Sleep deprivation increases the likelihood teens will suffer

myriad negative consequences, including an inability to concentrate, poor grades, drowsy-

driving incidents, anxiety, depression, thoughts of suicide, and even suicide attempts. Alongside

this, a study according to (Gustafson, 2018) said that Students who don’t have healthy sleeping

36 | 8:30 CLASSES AS COMBAT TO THE ARISING SLEEP DEPRIVATION AND
STRESS ON HIGH-SCHOOL STUDENTS

habits or don’t get enough sleep at night are more likely to feel stressed than students who get

plenty of sleep, according to the National Sleep Foundation. Sleep allows a student’s body and

brain to recharge, and it helps to keep the immune system strong. Inadequate amounts of sleep

can make a child more aggressive and limit his ability to learn, concentrate and solve

problems. As to how was stated before, as students, they experienced and understood the effects

and struggles explained in the studies shown above, which was conducted in another country.

The said fact that sleep deprivation and stress can have such massive consequences, the

researchers, together with the respondents, think that there should be an action taken to prevent

further effects and problems which can arise in the said accord, and that is the implementation of

the 8:30 or later classes.

Conclusion

1.) The researchers knew that there is at least a 50 percent chance that the said

implementation will take place here in our nation. After the research was accomplished, they

knew that the students’ and respondents’ agreement with the said implementation could be a

significant impact on the process of legislation and approval of the proposed accord. Moreover, it

will be increasing the likelihood of law and enforcement of the said bill here in the Philippines.

2.) The researchers further knew that after the implementation, things would be much better.

After analyzing the answers of the respondents, the analysts knew that the further enactment of

the bill would help decrease the increasing difficulty among stress and sleep deprivation on

learners and teachers. Moreover, after the implementation, undoubtedly, the development will

prosper, and continuously, it would set a silver lining over the horizon.

ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST CATHOLIC SCHOOL, INC.

37 | 8:30 CLASSES AS COMBAT TO THE ARISING SLEEP DEPRIVATION AND
STRESS ON HIGH-SCHOOL STUDENTS

3.) The researchers knew that after the declared accord would be implemented, the economy

will be soaring higher than how it was before. They believe this would happen because as to how

was stated before, the students are the future of this nation, this world rather. Therefore, after

knowing that once this bill takes place, the students will be better and will be developing more,

then, the future will be very much better with the change that continues to prosper and flourish.

Recommendations

1. The researchers highly recommend that the future researchers must try this study outside

the school premises because the analysis was only conducted within the premises of St. John the

Baptist Catholic School, Inc.

2. The researchers also recommend to include the parents and the teachers as respondents to

their future study. Moreover, the researchers also recommend taking their perspectives and

standpoints about the said implementation of the 8:30 classes.

3. It is also highly recommended to have a more massive crowd as their respondents so that

they will have a broader and more significant source of information.

4. The Government should take a minute to look at these problems, which emerged with the

students’ overall well-being and state. Therefore, they should at least re-consider the fact of

approving the implementation of the later classes.

5. For private schools, the school administrations should also look at these difficulties and

further discuss the approval of later classes on the premises.

Further Research

This research about the implementation of the 8:30 classes as a combat to the arising

problems of the students can serve as an aid not only in the legislation but also for the future

researches regarding the same or related topic. This study will not only benefit the students.

Instead, as to how was stated before, the Government, the Teachers, The Parents, and the Future

researchers would benefit in this accord.

Moreover, this study emphasizes the general effects of having the early classes and contrasting

them to having the later ones. With that said, further researchers can explore a lot more, which

can either lead to the same outcome or a different conclusion.

Furthermore, the stated problem in this research is limited only to the time being until the

day of the implementation happens. Of course, some of the data gathered can still be used for

future researches but, not all of it will be the same shortly, for time continues to pass by. As to

how they put it, change is the only constant thing in this world. Alongside that fact, this research

is open for suggestions, corrections, and further clarifications, which will be stated by future

researchers under their future researches.

Transcriptions

Respondent 1

Researcher: What are your perspectives about the 7:30 a.m. starting school time?

Respondent 1: In my opinion, the standard of classes starting at 7:30 am, nothing new in

particular. I have been well adjusted to it already since it has been the same schedule for me

since my elementary days.

Although it has been a norm for me, I would rather have it that the time would be moved

to more favorable schedule for students as it is too early for some.

Researcher: What do you think are the disadvantages of starting the classes at 7:30?

Respondent 1: The disadvantages of having a standard of 7:30 am for the start of classes are in

relation to different individuals. Some students do not get the luxury of getting sufficient rest

thereby hindering in them, in their academic performance.

Some students who live far away from the school are forced to have a more strictly-

manageable routine since they might be pressured of the time that they have to spend in order to

get to school. And some students are also not fully awake around this time, by which I mean they

are still adjusting their selves from waking up and that they would have trouble in being in tuned

within the class.

45 | 8:30 CLASSES AS COMBAT TO THE ARISING SLEEP DEPRIVATION AND
STRESS ON HIGH-SCHOOL STUDENTS

Researcher: What are your thoughts about the implementation of the House Bill No.569, the bill

which seeks to start classes at 8:30 a.m.?

Respondent 1: In regards to this, I would say that I am in favor of this being implemented. I

have already experienced having a class that starts at 8:30 am and I am much more comfortable

with it than having classes start at 7:30 am.

Researcher: In what way can this implementation benefit the students, teachers, and parents?

Respondent 1: There would be a lot of people who can benefit with the implementation of this

rule, teachers, students and for the parents. For one, people will have more time to prepare in

whatever they might have.

The students will have more time for their rest and have an easier time to waking up in

the morning. The parents are also going to have an easier time in preparing their sons and

daughters for schools. And the teachers are also going to have a lot more time to prepare their

lessons, activities, or school works before classes start.

Researcher: Which do you prefer best, 7:30 or 8:30 classes? and why?

Respondent 1: I would much rather prefer the standard of having classes start at 8:30 in the

morning. The reason for this is like what I have previously stated before, it would be a lot more

beneficial for everybody in terms of health, time management, and performance.

Researcher: What do you think are the disadvantages of starting the classes at 7:30?

Yung focus and concentration kase since maaga yung pasok pwedeng di pa ready yung

projects is pwedeng madaliin nalang nila.

Researcher: What are your thoughts about the implementation of the House Bill No.569, the bill

which seeks to start classes at 8:30 a.m.?

Researcher: In what way can this implementation benefit the students, teachers, and parents?

Respondent 2: Sa students nga yung mas mageexcel sila academically.

Researcher: Which do you prefer best, 7:30 or 8:30 classes? and why?

Respondent 3

Researcher: What are your perspectives about the 7:30 a.m. starting school time?

Respondent 3: It’s way too early for me because as a senior high student, we have a lot of

ongoing research and projects and this starting school time is very nakakapressure.

Researcher: What do you think are the disadvantages of starting the classes at 7:30?

Respondent 3: Students are most likely to be absent minded, still sleepy and tired.

Researcher: What are your thoughts about the implementation of the House Bill No.569, the bill

which seeks to start classes at 8:30 a.m.?

Respondent 3: Thank God! It would be very refreshing. We the students of ABM strand had

9:30 start up class and I would tell you that it is very convenient.

Researcher: In what way can this implementation benefit the students, teachers, and parents?

Respondent 3: Students, had enough sleep. Teachers can have a lot of preparation time. Parents,

they wouldn’t have to wake up early in the morning to assist their children.

Researcher: Which do you prefer best, 7:30 or 8:30 classes? and why?

Respondent 3: 7:30 class, even though this specific time had a lot of disadvantages, this would

discipline students in terms of time management.

Respondent 4

Researcher: What are your perspectives about the 7:30 a.m. starting school time?

Researcher: What do you think are the disadvantages of starting the classes at 7:30?

consider mo na maaga yung pasok bukas so kailangan mo madaliin yung assignments tapos pag

di umabot, magpupuyat ka. Tendency non wala kang focus sa klase kinabukasan.

Researcher: What are your thoughts about the implementation of the House Bill No.569, the bill

which seeks to start classes at 8:30 a.m.?

Respondent 4: Maganda yung gantong panukala kase as an ABM student naranasan ko to nung

1st sem at masasabi kong maayos naman kase medyo mahaba yung time para magprepare for

Researcher: In what way can this implementation benefit the students, teachers, and parents?

benefit yun sakanila pag nakikita nilang mas nag-eexcel yung anak nila academically.

Researcher: Which do you prefer best, 7:30 or 8:30 classes? and why?

Respondent 5

Researcher: What are your perspectives about the 7:30 a.m. starting school time?

Respondent 5: Para sakin maaga yung 7:30 lalo na kapag maraming ginagawang projects or

requirements.

maaga.

Tas para sakin kasi, kapag masyadong maaga, yung brain nung ibang estudyante di pa

masyadong gumagana or nakakapagisip ng maayos.

Researcher: What do you think are the disadvantages of starting the classes at 7:30?

karamihan lalo na kapag first subject which is 7:30-8:30, konti lang yung nagpaparticipate sa

recitation.

50 | 8:30 CLASSES AS COMBAT TO THE ARISING SLEEP DEPRIVATION AND
STRESS ON HIGH-SCHOOL STUDENTS

Isa pang disadvantage na naiisip ko kapag 7:30 yung pasok, maraming natutulog or

inaantok sa klase.

Researcher: What are your thoughts about the implementation of the House Bill No.569, the bill

which seeks to start classes at 8:30 a.m.?

tinatamad so mas malaki yung chance na may participation na during recitation.

Researcher: In what way can this implementation benefit the students, teachers, and parents?

sakanila or nagpeprepare ng lunch nila.

Researcher: Which do you prefer best, 7:30 or 8:30 classes? and why?

51 | 8:30 CLASSES AS COMBAT TO THE ARISING SLEEP DEPRIVATION AND
STRESS ON HIGH-SCHOOL STUDENTS

Respondent 6

Researcher: What are your perspectives about the 7:30 a.m. starting school time?

kapag maaga tayong gumigising.

Researcher: What do you think are the disadvantages of starting the classes at 7:30?

Respondent 6: Dahil mga pilipino tayo at mga tao sanay tayong nagpupuyat, gusto nating

ginagawa sa gabi yung mga gusto nating gawin at yung tendency nun nahihirapan tayo gumising

ng maaga.

Researcher: What are your thoughts about the implementation of the House Bill No.569, the bill

which seeks to start classes at 8:30 a.m.?

marami yung may gusto nun kasi nga may 1hour tayong pagitan pa. Kumbaga mas makakapag

ready kana nun.

Researcher: In what way can this implementation benefit the students, teachers, and parents?

Respondent 6: Sa students, dahil puyat tapos may nakalimutang gawing activity or project

Researcher: Which do you prefer best, 7:30 or 8:30 classes? and why?

ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST CATHOLIC SCHOOL, INC.

52 | 8:30 CLASSES AS COMBAT TO THE ARISING SLEEP DEPRIVATION AND
STRESS ON HIGH-SCHOOL STUDENTS

Respondent 6: Personally, and honestly, yung 8:30 kasi, yun marami siyang benefits sa atin

hindi tayo mapupuyat tapos kapag may kailangan tayo mang gawin pwede pa nating gawin.

Respondent 7

Researcher: What are your perspectives about the 7:30 a.m. starting school time?

Respondent 7: My perspective about 7:30 am classes, yung mga estudyante open like nagiging

Researcher: What do you think are the disadvantages of starting the classes at 7:30?

Respondent 7: Yung disadvantages ng pagpasok ng 7:30, yung academic progression ng

estudyante mas mababa.

Kumbaga, dalawang klase yung estudyante, pwedeng early bird or pwedeng night owl,

kung night owl yung estudyante mas mahihirapan siya mag compete at the time.

Researcher: What are your thoughts about the implementation of the House Bill No.569, the bill

which seeks to start classes at 8:30 a.m.?

magiging standard time kasi malaking bagay na yung isang oras mas nagiging enthusiastic sila.

Researcher: In what way can this implementation benefit the students, teachers, and parents?

Respondent 7: Yung sa students, yung academic performance nila. Tapos yung sa teacher

naman makakapag produce sila ng productive student. Tapos yung sa parents, yung anak nila

mas makakapag-aral ng mabuti.

ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST CATHOLIC SCHOOL, INC.

53 | 8:30 CLASSES AS COMBAT TO THE ARISING SLEEP DEPRIVATION AND
STRESS ON HIGH-SCHOOL STUDENTS

Researcher: Which do you prefer best, 7:30 or 8:30 classes? and why?

Respondent 7: 8:30 classes, because students are more likely to be enthusiastic, productive, and

more especially attentiveness towards learning.

Respondent 8

Researcher: What are your perspectives about the 7:30 a.m. starting school time?

Respondent 8: Actually, I'm not that in favor of the 7:30 a.m class kase sobrang aga lalo na

sa mga apalit, sa malolos, kaya they have to wake up earlier in the morning para mag prepare.

Researcher: What do you think are the disadvantages of starting the classes at 7:30?

Respondent 8: First na disadvantage na nakikita ko is yung kulang na hours ng tulog kasi

syempre most of us, we’re doing school works and it will take us a lot of time to do all of it na

inaabot na tayo ng kunwari twelve or more or less one ganyan.

Tapos ano pangalawang disadvantage ayun yung

Ayun.

Researcher: What are your thoughts about the implementation of the House Bill No.569, the bill

which seeks to start classes at 8:30 a.m.?

ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST CATHOLIC SCHOOL, INC.

54 | 8:30 CLASSES AS COMBAT TO THE ARISING SLEEP DEPRIVATION AND
STRESS ON HIGH-SCHOOL STUDENTS

Respondent 8: Ano, I'm in favor of that bill kase hindi lang naman na gusto kong madagdagan

Researcher: In what way can this implementation benefit the students, teachers, and parents?

Respondent 8: First of all, sa students yun nga yung mas mahabang oras ng pahinga or ng tulog,

at pangalawa, hindi sya hassle to those people who are living far away from the school, at

Researcher: Which do you prefer best, 7:30 or 8:30 classes? and why?

Respondent 8: Syempre 8:30 ah sino ba yung hinde?

Respondent 9

Researcher: What are your perspectives about the 7:30 a.m. starting school time?

Respondent 9: So yung perspective about 7:30 class ako ay isa sa mga biktima nyan. Kanina

lang na late ako 7:30 nakaka inis. I mean di naman totally nakakainis.

ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST CATHOLIC SCHOOL, INC.

55 | 8:30 CLASSES AS COMBAT TO THE ARISING SLEEP DEPRIVATION AND
STRESS ON HIGH-SCHOOL STUDENTS

Yung perspective ko about 7:30 a.m, napaka parang disadvantage when it comes to our

students lalo na yung sa mga long distance na lugar na kailangan pa mag travel pa, walk then

ride the Jeep, para, then walk again so, sobrang layo nakakapagod so yun yung pananaw ko

about 7:30 a.m class.

Researcher: What do you think are the disadvantages of starting the classes at 7:30?

Respondent 9: So like what I said earlier, gaya na nga ng sinabi ko na I'm a victim of this

and pangatlo nayon so ewan mag babago na siguro ako haha so yun yung pananaw ko about sa

Researcher: What are your thoughts about the implementation of the House Bill No.569, the bill

which seeks to start classes at 8:30 a.m.?

Respondent 9: Well napaka laking tulong nyan pag dating saken at pag dating sa mga ibang

studyante lalo na yung mga long distance well sabi ko nga kanina nakaka tulong ito for them,

they have some time to prepare some things like their yung ano pag lalakad palang pag sakay ng

then All Senate yung batas na yan and somehow some way sana mapasa yung batas na yan.

Researcher: In what way can this implementation benefit the students, teachers, and parents?

Respondent 9: So yun nga gaya ng sinabi ko kanina, students since first yung late nag kakaroon

sila ng time to prepare hindi na sila ma le late like nung second ay first semester naten diba 8:30

STRESS ON HIGH-SCHOOL STUDENTS

pa pa print, na pre prepare ko para sa ka nila pwede ko pa silang I entertain para ma I print ko

kung ano gusto nilang I print.

Yung sa teachers naman, teacher, first siguro yun nga mag kakaroon pa sila ng time for

their preparation para sa mga lessons and activities na pwedeng I prepare para sa mga studyante.

Parents ay yan nga naman at yung R.I.R mababawasan na yung stress nila so hindi na sila

chuchuchu yung mga sermon nila pag dating dun samen lalo na sakin, tas sesermonan nako kasi

nakikita na nila puro green daw yung dala dala kong papel so yun yung parents na yun

mababawasan stress nila.

Researcher: Which do you prefer best, 7:30 or 8:30 classes? and why?

and pag pasok ko pagod na pagod ako and that's napakalaking ano yun uhm tulong nung 8:30 if

ever man na ma implement yan ng government and also wala namang disadvantage yan eh,

naba balance yon diba.

Respondent 10

Researcher: What are your perspectives about the 7:30 a.m. starting school time?

Respondent 10: Ang hirap bumangon kasi in the first place ang aga non.

ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST CATHOLIC SCHOOL, INC.

57 | 8:30 CLASSES AS COMBAT TO THE ARISING SLEEP DEPRIVATION AND
STRESS ON HIGH-SCHOOL STUDENTS

ganon.

Researcher: What do you think are the disadvantages of starting the classes at 7:30?

Researcher: What are your thoughts about the implementation of the House Bill No.569, the bill

which seeks to start classes at 8:30 a.m.?

Researcher: In what way can this implementation benefit the students, teachers, and parents?

ginawa?

58 | 8:30 CLASSES AS COMBAT TO THE ARISING SLEEP DEPRIVATION AND
STRESS ON HIGH-SCHOOL STUDENTS

Researcher: Which do you prefer best, 7:30 or 8:30 classes? and why?

Respondent 11

Researcher: What are your perspectives about the 7:30 a.m. starting school time?

Respondent 11: To put it in one word it is inhumane since ano, syempre we are all exhausted

with all of the projects and the activities going on and our high school life and then we have to

wake up early, we have to prepare, we have our home works and our projects going den and

when you go to school tapos you just feel exhausted, you just kind of don’t have the motivation

anymore to continue with your acads, so I think it’s really inhumane and really unfair to a

student to have their class starts at 7:30.

Researcher: What do you think are the disadvantages of starting the classes at 7:30?

Respondent 11: I mean like what I said before, for one we are all exhausted na. The

disadvantages of that is that our brains are actually working properly at that time in the morning

that really really early.

There are studies that conducted that actually support that idea na dapat hindi tayo mag

start ng classes natin ng 7:30, it can either be recommended at 8:30 or 9:30 class which I can

actually support since in ABM we have our Monday classes at 9:30 in the morning and its very

very helpful for us since we’re all kind of exhausted in our studies and everything so parang na

re refresh kami pagka may 9:30 kaming classes.

ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST CATHOLIC SCHOOL, INC.

59 | 8:30 CLASSES AS COMBAT TO THE ARISING SLEEP DEPRIVATION AND
STRESS ON HIGH-SCHOOL STUDENTS

Researcher: What are your thoughts about the implementation of the House Bill No.569, the bill

which seeks to start classes at 8:30 a.m.?

Respondent 11: I really think it’s a good idea, even though meron lang 1hour interval though

it’s really helpful na since we will have one more hour of rest and one more hour of preparation

in order to gather our self before going to school.

Researcher: In what way can this implementation benefit the students, teachers, and parents?

Respondent 11: Let’s start first with the parents, syempre kasi yung mga parents natin most of

us are very dependent into our parents when it comes to preparation of our food, our clothes and

everything so for one hindi na nila kailangan masyadong maagang gumising since sila din naman

pagod sila kasi yung iba may trabaho, yung iba maraming ginagawa sa bahay, so yun ang

advantages sa kanila nakakapag pahinga sila and yung students of course it’s a very important

thing for students to actually be re-energized before they take on another day in their academic

life and it would be very beneficial if they start at 8:30.

For the teachers naman it’s the same thing with them eh basta ang pinaka point lang ditto,

they will have the rest that they need.

Researcher: Which do you prefer best, 7:30 or 8:30 classes? and why?

Respondent 11: Of course the whole point of this is that I prepare it would be 8:30 classes since

ayon nga, it would be very helpful for me kasi sobrang mentally exhausted na ako, physically

drained and every time that we go to school at 7:30 sobrang wala na akong motivation to go to

school, wala na akong motivation to do my assignments, to do my projects, so kahit na 8:30 lang

yung pinaka tawad dyan go na dyan.

ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST CATHOLIC SCHOOL, INC.

60 | 8:30 CLASSES AS COMBAT TO THE ARISING SLEEP DEPRIVATION AND
STRESS ON HIGH-SCHOOL STUDENTS

Respondent 12

Researcher: What are your perspectives about the 7:30 a.m. starting school time?

Respondent 12: Actually, attending classes in 7:30 am is not beneficial for the students, because

our mind is still stagnant that time, we have to energize it first and to be, you know, to have more

activities.

Attending 7:30 am classes deprives also the students to take their breakfast, I think I

suppose it has to be 8:30 am.

Researcher: What do you think are the disadvantages of starting the classes at 7:30?

Respondent 12: Our minds are not yet ready for the class, it is not open for learning, because we

are still sleepy, and personally, I am still sleepy when attending 7:30 am class and that is one

disadvantage.

The second disadvantage, for the people or the students who are coming from far places

to the school, it would actually be not convenient for them to attend 7:30 am class, because of the

distance between their home and the school, so give time allowance for them.

Researcher: What are your thoughts about the implementation of the House Bill No.569, the bill

which seeks to start classes at 8:30 a.m.?

Respondent 12: It's beneficial for the students, because those disadvantages will be eradicated

when we have an 8:30 am, like we will more have time to eat our breakfast, our minds will be

ready and the time travelling from home to school will be more convenient.

Researcher: In what way can this implementation benefit the students, teachers, and parents?

ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST CATHOLIC SCHOOL, INC.

61 | 8:30 CLASSES AS COMBAT TO THE ARISING SLEEP DEPRIVATION AND
STRESS ON HIGH-SCHOOL STUDENTS

Respondent 12: For the students, nasabi ko na yung sa students.

For the teachers same with the students, sometimes teachers, their minds are not

energized yet to teach the students when its 7:30 am and they can have more preparation in doing

their power point presentation, in preparing their new lessons, when they have time allowance

and for the parents naman its not necessarily needed to wake up early as 6:30 or even 5:30 am,

just to prepare the meals for their children, because thinking that they attend 7:30 am class, so

that is for the parents , for the teachers , and for the students.

Researcher: Which do you prefer best, 7:30 or 8:30 classes? and why?

Respondent 12: It’s 8:30, as they say that practicing your mind in the morning, like when you

are reviewing your notes its beneficial for us to have it early as we can, just like 5:30 am, 4:30

am, because they say, our minds are still fresh that time.

But, for me, at my age, I'm already 18 years old, and our sleeping cycle, changes from

time to time. I have my sleep at night at 11 pm or even 12 am, and I need more sleep, so if we

will have it 8:30 am, I can do more, I can prepare my things and actually the best and the number

one priority that we will consider the 8:30 am classes is the sleeping time, the one thing that all

of the students need; the enough sleep.

The having enough sleep, it will help our mind work consistently and productively so the

best is 8:30 am not the 7:30 am class.

ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST CATHOLIC SCHOOL, INC.

62 | 8:30 CLASSES AS COMBAT TO THE ARISING SLEEP DEPRIVATION AND
STRESS ON HIGH-SCHOOL STUDENTS

Respondent 13

Researcher: What are your perspectives about the 7:30 a.m. starting school time?

Respondent 13: Although at first it may seem productive dahil nga mas maaga tayo nag start, by

looking at the other side parang mas na aano yung mga student, dahil nga mas kailangan maaga

silang gumising, dahil nga naka cut yung regular sleeping time nila, so it can be disadvantageous.

Researcher: What do you think are the disadvantages of starting the classes at 7:30?

Respondent 13: So ayun nga, dahil nga diba last sem we have 8:30 classes and this sem 7:30

naman yung klase natin, nakikita naman natin yung difference diba, pag 8:30 kase parang mas

nabo boost up yung isip natin, dahil meron tayong enough sleep, while yung 7:30 diba parang

lutang tayo o sabog ganun.

Researcher: What are your thoughts about the implementation of the House Bill No.569, the bill

which seeks to start classes at 8:30 a.m.?

throughout the day, dahil nga mas nakakakuha tayo ng enough sleep diba.

Researcher: In what way can this implementation benefit the students, teachers, and parents?

Respondent 13: So iyun nga unang una sa students, parang mas nagiging fresh tayo, mas

nagiging alert at mas nagiging attentive tayo, dahil meron tayong enough sleep.

ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST CATHOLIC SCHOOL, INC.

63 | 8:30 CLASSES AS COMBAT TO THE ARISING SLEEP DEPRIVATION AND
STRESS ON HIGH-SCHOOL STUDENTS

Researcher: Which do you prefer best, 7:30 or 8:30 classes? and why?

Respondent 13: 8:30 classes, dahil hindi naman sa tamad tayong mga studyante, based on the

experiences natin before mas nagiging productive tayo kapag mas madami yung sleeping time

Respondent 14

Researcher: What are your perspectives about the 7:30 a.m. starting school time? What do you

think are the disadvantages of starting the classes at 7:30?

Respondent 14: 7:30 am classes can be beneficial and disadvantageous to students.

First it opens their sense of punctuality, thus helping them learn for their future lives. It

can also be applied for their future jobs.

On the other hand, it also affects their mental health as studies show that human brain

functions effectively in time scale of 8-2 pm. As a result, lower marks may be attained as 7:30

am classes continue.

Researcher: What are your thoughts about the implementation of the House Bill No.569, the bill

which seeks to start classes at 8:30 a.m.?

ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST CATHOLIC SCHOOL, INC.

64 | 8:30 CLASSES AS COMBAT TO THE ARISING SLEEP DEPRIVATION AND
STRESS ON HIGH-SCHOOL STUDENTS

Respondent 14: It is a bill which seeks to help students but government must still think through

it thoroughly as it is a serious matter.

Researcher: In what way can this implementation benefit the students, teachers, and parents?

Respondent 14:8:30 classes will help students gain rest as academic depression and anxiety is

prevalent. It will also affect teachers as students are not the only affected ones with early classes.

Lastly, parents will be affected as well, as they are the ones who wake up early in the

morning to prepare for their offspring’s classes. Overall, it has numerous of advantages to all

sectors of society.

Researcher: Which do you prefer best, 7:30 or 8:30 classes? and why?

Respondent 14: Personally, as a student, I prefer 8:30 classes. It does not only benefit me but

also helps me maintain a constant mental status enabling me to perform well not only in school

but in other areas as well (such as extra activities, co-curricular activities, etc.).

Respondent 15

Researcher: What are your perspectives about the 7:30 a.m. starting school time?

I mean, naging standard time na yan ng school at

naging body clock na ng mga estudyante.

Researcher: What do you think are the disadvantages of starting the classes at 7:30?

ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST CATHOLIC SCHOOL, INC.

65 | 8:30 CLASSES AS COMBAT TO THE ARISING SLEEP DEPRIVATION AND
STRESS ON HIGH-SCHOOL STUDENTS

Respondent 15: Siguro, for some, medyo maaga ang 7:30 am kaya may possibility na tamarin

sila which in return, malate sila ng dating sa school.

Researcher: What are your thoughts about the implementation of the House Bill No.569, the bill

which seeks to start classes at 8:30 a.m.?

Respondent 15: Much better than 7:30 am class.

Researcher: In what way can this implementation benefit the students, teachers, and parents?

Researcher: What are your thoughts about the implementation of the House Bill No.569, the bill

which seeks to start classes at 8:30 a.m.?

magkaroon sila ng time for other things.
