NUTRITION AND DIET THERAPY

LABORATORY

DIETARY COMPUTATION/TOOLS FOR NUTRITIONAL ASSESSMENT

A. DBW - Desirable Body Weight

IBW - Ideal Body Weight

1 INFANTS
FOR 1- 12 MONTHS OLD
Example: The IBW(DBW) of 8 months baby
FORMULA = DBW(kg) = (age in months/2)+3 DBW = (8/2)+3
= 4+3
= 7kg

2 CHILDREN
FOR 1- 12 YEARS OLD
Example : The IBW of 4 years old boy
FORMULA = ( age in years X 2 )+ 8 IBW = ( 4 *2)+8
=8+8
= 16 kg
3 ADOLESCENCE/ADULTS
FOR 13 and above years old

FORMULA TANNHAUSER METHOD (Broca's Index)

DBW = (height - 100) - 10% (height-100)

Example: Calculate the DBW of an adult female who stands 5'2" tall.

a. Convert height to centimeter as follows:

5'2" = (5 feet x 12 inches/foot) +2 inches NOTE: 1foot = 12 inches

= 62 inches x 2.54 cm/inch 1 inch = 2.54 cm
= 157.48 cm 1meter = 100cm

b. Deduct from the height the factor 100

DBW(kg) = (157.48 - 100)

= 57.48

c. To adjust the body frame for Filipinos, deduct additional 10%

DBW(kg) = 57.48 - (10% 0f 57.48)

= 57.48 - 5.748
= 51.732 or 52

NOTE: 10% can be added or subtracted to the computed value to adjust

for body frame size.
B. NUTRITIONAL STATUS

1. DEGREE OF NUTRITION TABLE

NORMAL 90 TO 109% OF THE IDEAL BODY WEIGHT
OVERNUTRITION
OVERWEIGHT 110 TO 119% OF THE IDEAL BODY WEIGHT
OBESE ≥ 120% OF THE IDEAL BODY WEIGHT
UNDERNUTRITION
1ST degree 80 TO 89 % (mild risk of malnutrition )
2ND degree 71 TO 79% ( moderate risk of malnutrition )
3RD degree 70% - BELOW( severe malnutrition )

FORMULA OF OBTAINING THE DEGREE OF NUTRITION

Example : 45 kg X 100% =86.54%

AW X 100% 52 kg
DBW interpretation is 1st degree malnurished

2. BMI
FORMULA
weight in kg
ht.(m)2

Example : The BMI of 15 years old boy who stands 5' and Note: 1inch = 2.54cm
weighs 45kg 1 meter = 100cm

Height in meters =5*12 = 60 inches

= 60 * 2.54cm =152.4cm ÷100cm = 1.524 meters
= 1.524 ×1.524
= 2.32

45 kg = 19.4 interpretation is normal

2.32

C. TER - TOTAL ENERGY REQUIREMENT PER DAY

TCR- TOTAL CALORIE REQUIREMENT PER DAY

NOTE : ROUND OFF FINAL TER OR TCR TO NEAREST 50 OR CAN BE DIVIDED BY 50.

1. Estimating TER of infants

FORMULA: TER/day = 90 to 95 kcal/kgDBW

Example: 8 months old

DBW = (age in months/2) +3 TER= 95kcal/kg DBW

= (8/2)+3 = 7kg (DBW) x 95kcal
= 4+3 = 665 or 650kcal/day
= 7kg DBW
2. Estimating TER of Children (1 - 12 years old)
Estimating TER of Adolescence (13 - 18 years old)

Kcal/Kg DBW
Age Range (Years)
Boys Girls
1- 2 83 80
3-5 77 72
6-9 70 65
10 - 12 62 55
13 - 15 56 47
16 - 18 51 44

a. TER for Children ( 1 - 12 years old)

Using kcal/kg body weight based on 2015 PDRI

Example: 4 years old girl with 16 kg body weight

TER(kcal) = 72 kcal/kg x 16kg body weight

= 1152 or 1150 kcal/day

b. TER for Teenager( 13 - 18 years old)

Example : The TER of a 15 years old boy who stands 5'

DBW = (5ft x12 inches/foot) TER/DAY = 56 kcal * 47 KDBW

= 60inches x 2.54 cm/inch = 2632 kcal
= 152.4cm - 100 = 2650 kcal
= 52.4 - 5.24 (10% of 52.4)
= 46.96 or 47kg
C. TER for Adult
TER based on estimate of energy expenditure according to physical activity level (PAL)

Physical Activity Level (PAL) and Values (kcal/kg body weight by Occupational Work Intensity

Example : The TER of a 35 years old female teacher(light PAL) who stands 5'2

DBW =5*12+ 2 = 62 inches TER/DAY = 35 kcal * 52 KDBW

= 62 * 2.54cm =157.48cm - 100 = 57.48 kg = 1,820 kcal
= 57.48 - 5.748 (10% ) =51.732 kg = 1,800 kcal
= 52 kg
D. PERCENTAGE DISTRIBUTION OF TER TO CPF

NOTE : C , P , F ARE ROUNDED OFF TO THE NEAREST 5 or can be divided by 5
