Banks are important financial institutions. They deal with the public, industry,
commerce and government. People and firms deposit their money in banks and can
have current accounts and deposit accounts. They can sign cheques that they draw
on their current account. This means that they don't have to carry cash around with
them. They can earn interest on deposit accounts.
To many people a bank is nothing more than a good-furnished building with a lot of clerks
sitting around at mahogany desks, and an immense safety vault filled with gold and
currency. To many others, a bank is a convenient place in which one can cash a check.
Below there are the real functions of a bank.
a. To provide a safe place for the custody of money and other valuables;
b. To facilitate the transmission of funds by drafts, or bills of exchange;
c. To encourage thrift;
d. To advise people on matters of an economic or financial nature.
A banker is a dealer in money. He borrows from one party and lends to another one in
the form of personal loans and overdrafts that uses them as working capital.
Your bank is the place where you can leave your money in safety, a place in which you
borrow money, a place where you can purchase a draft or bill of exchange that will be
legal tender in every country in the world, a place to learn the advantages of saving,
and the place to turn to when you are in need of information or advice in your business
affairs.
