Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD)

Definition: Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) is a diagnostic and/or therapeutic


procedure used to help in the diagnosis or treatment in the upper GI tract. A technology or
system that integrates a computer display with a pair of eyeglasses, using lens or mirror to reflect
images into the eyes.

Purposes: The doctor may order EGC to diagnose and treat when possible certain disorders
of the upper GI tract.

Objective: To diagnose conditions that may affect esophagus, stomach or duodenum. Doctor
might order EGD if the patient is experiencing certain symptoms such as sever, chronic
heartburn and vomiting blood.

Equipments:
1. Endoscope
2. Anesthesia
3. Clean gloves

Procedures /steps (with rationale):


1. Introduce yourself to the patient
Rationale: To establish nurse-patient relationship.
2. Perform hand hygiene
Rationale: To maintain aseptic technique
3. Provide the client privacy.
Rationale: To build trust-based physician-patient relationship.
4. Explain to the patient what is the procedure all about.
Rationale: To encourage compliance of the patient.
5. Place the patient in a supine position.
6. Spray an anesthetic medication to the mouth of the patient.
Rationale: to numb the throat.
7. Once the procedure is done, assess the patient’s overall feelings.
8. Thank the patient for cooperating.
9. Document all the necessary findings.

Nursing Responsibilities
A. Before the procedure
8 hours NPO before the procedure, don’t take any antacids or carafate before the
procedure, ask the patient to wear comfortable clothes. Assess Vital signs and keep the
patient informed throughout the duration of the procedure. Address the concerns of
patient.
B. During the procedure
Tell the patient that he/she might feel mild discomfort or gagging when the endoscope is
inserted. Reassure the patient that it won’t interfere with the breathing and wont feel
anything once it is placed. Tell the patient that he/she might be asked to swallow a couple
of times to help guide the endoscope downward.
C. After the procedure
Administer necessary medication if ordered by the doctor. Assess for grogginess from the
sedation, feeling of bloating, sore throat, nausea, difficulty swallowing and mild pain
where the IV was inserted. Teach/Reassure the patient that it will be resolved within 48
hours.
