ELICIT
What do you usually do when you are curious about something?

 How many Nips Candy are there in a bag?
 What color of Nips are in the bag?
 How many of each color of Nips are in the bag?

Teacher chooses one introductory question:

How many Nips Candy are there in a bag?

Ask students to guess the number of Nips Candy in the bag.

Teacher asks this follow-up question:

How do we determine if your answers are correct?

Students may answer “To open the bag”

Teacher opens the bag for demonstration and counts the number of Nips Candy
and record observations on the board as “Data”

EXPLORE
Allow students to perform individually the Nips Experiment. Read directions aloud
while students follow along.  Allow students about 15 minutes to complete the
activity.

NIPS EXPERIMENT

1. Form students into groups.

2. Get at least one bag for each student.
3. Decide one question that they would like to answer about their Nips
Candy.
4. Guess what the answer to their question might be.
5. Open your Nips candy and test your answers.
6. Record your observations. Be sure to count the number of Nips
Candy and the number of each color in a bag.
7. Answer the question based on the results.

The teachers bring back the class together and asks everyone about
their questions and the answers that they found.

Teachers will solicit answers from the class about the steps that they have gone
through to complete the activity.

Teacher will then briefly explain each step and important terms that
students need to understand as the discussion reviews the process of the
recently concluded laboratory activity.

EXPLAIN

Teacher will then ask this question to students:

“Is it okay to alter the results of an experiment especially if your hypothesis
and actual results do not match?”
ELABORATE

“What do you think may happen when you alter the results of an
experiment?”

EVALUATE
Students will design a simple scientific investigation on a specific problem they
