Learning Strategies of ABM students towards the subject Fundamentals of Accountancy

Business and Management

CHAPTER 1

Introduction

Background of the Study

Fundamentals of Accountancy, Business and Management's (FABM) main goal is

to teach students the basic concepts and principles of bookkeeping as an introductory

level towards accounting career. Not only to accounting career but also to help incoming

college students who will take courses that are related to Business Administration,

Management and Commerce. In a study conducted by Urquiza and Usabiaga (2015)

stated that the main objective of Fundamentals of Accountancy, Business, and

Management is to help students understand the fundamental accounting concepts and

principles as well as to develop the capability to perform the basic accounting functions:

the recognition, valuation, measurement and recording of the most common business

transactions and the preparations of accounting statements. Students who aimed to be in

Accountancy Businesses Management (ABM) Strand need to be motivated and active in

terms of learnings and studying. And during those times, there should be different

strategies and practices that should be performed in order for them to increase the

percentages of learning and to enhance their attitude towards learning (Ong, 2016).

According to Mercado et al. (2016), learning accounting topics is not like

memorizing accounting terms or even reading a book. For this reason, the subject is
challenging. It is regarded as one of the more challenging senior high school courses as

well as a foundational subject for the ABM strand. Due to the complexity of the material,

students frequently struggle to comprehend the courses. Because the nature of the subject

is analysis and comprehension of a particular situation, lack of liberal education in

English and Arithmetic should also be taken into consideration in these circumstances.

The track of ABM focuses on managing financial wealth that precursor to

business where concepts of scientific and logical thinking is developed. Accountancy is

one of the most in-demand courses in the whole wide world. It is now one of the

professions that students tend to dream to be. Students who aimed to be Certified Public

Accountant (CPA) or financial consultants need to be motivated and active in terms of

learning's and studying. And during those times, there should be different strategies and

practices that should be performed in order for them to increase the percentages of

learning and to enhance their attitude towards learning (Ong, 2016). Although ABM track

is a good surface for being ready to college life, students find it hard to cope with this

subject specifically when doing tasks. There are some problems that students are

experiencing like adjusting a transaction and the financial positions.

The students had a hard time understanding the lessons. Some people find it

challenging to use worksheets, and some weren't familiar with the accounting cycle.

Students also struggle with financial accounts since they still don't fully grasp the

fundamentals of accounting, which are crucial for business decisions. Despite the fact

that there are numerous foreign and domestic publications on fundamental accounting,

none of them address the challenges faced by Grade 12 ABM students in Fundamentals

of Accountancy, Business and Management.


Since there are so many activities available to us thanks to technology, most of

which are leisure-related and take up the majority of students' time, it's understandable

that some students are unsure of whether or not they find it beneficial to use technology

for their academics. Their surroundings and interests in studying have an impact on how

hard they study, which has an impact on the students.

It's crucial to understand that accounting education must start in senior high

school. Understanding how FABM topic influences Grade 12 ABM students' growth can

aid in their construction of accounting education programs and emphasize the

relationship between their academic achievement and FABM subject. Students can get

experience to aid them in their higher education with the development of more effective

senior high school accounting courses. According to these connected studies,

fundamental accounting is extremely important for college students who will attend

accounting courses.

These activities involve teamwork, improving analytical skills, and conducting

research in the field of accounting. 61% of their accounting students successfully

complete the requirements to join international accounting organizations and become

APA members. The university holds that in order for students to perform more

outstandingly and excellently academically, effective tactics and practices are required.

These exercises gave them the opportunity to practice being true accountants. They made

the kids more self-assured and prepared for life in the outside world. Because of this, the

university is exposing Activities for the growth of its students.

The study's main goal is to examine the various lessons in Fundamentals of ABM

that students might find challenging to comprehend. Additionally, the students receive
significant business immersion training (such as internship for Accountancy students).

Accounting students can greatly benefit from these exercises and activities by becoming

more enthusiastic about their studies. Additionally, thanks to its methods and techniques,

the University of the Philippines produced 98% of successful accountancy graduates. To

the previously mentioned gap in this paper, the researchers decided to get data from the

current ABM students of the Narvacan National Central High School. Additionally, this

study is meant to discover various learning strategies that will help them achieve

students’ endeavors and to ameliorate their academic performances especially in

Fundamentals of Accountancy Business and Management.

Statement of the Problem

This study is design to determine the preferred “Learning Strategies of ABM Students

Towards the Subject Fundamentals of Accountancy Business and Management” and aims

to seek answers of the following questions:

1. To identify the struggles of Grade 12- ABM Students towards the FABM Subject

2. To quantify the comprehensions of students towards the Topics of FABM

3. To determine the strategies that helps the Grade 12 ABM students cope up in the

subject Fundamental of Accountancy Business and Management


Significance of the Study

This study will be beneficial to the following:

STUDENTS. This will benefit students’ comprehension and better adaptation of new

strategies to improve their understanding towards the subject FABM.

TEACHERS. This will help them understand why their students are having a hard

time dealing with the subject FABM.

ACADEMIC. This will enhance their and develop students’ understanding of FABM

subject that will stand as their guide for them to know the parts that they are having

troubles and struggles.

FUTURE RESEARCHERS. This will generate new knowledge as their basis for

future studies.

Scope and Delimitation

The senior high school students in the accountancy business and management (ABM)

strand of the k–12 integrated basic education department with regard to their specialized

subject FABM, as well as the various learning-related variables.

This study focuses on the preferred the strategies of 48 Grade 12 ABM Students who

are enrolled in the institution of Narvacan National Central High School and 13 students

from STI Colleges of Vigan of the school year 2022-2023 in their accounting subject

only. The researchers will give questionnaires to the respondents to answer.


Operational Definition of Terms

Learning strategies. It is a way students coped up with the better understanding or

comprehension. n

FABM. Fundamentals of Accountancy Business and Management is a subject

specialized for the Accountancy Business and Management strand.

Attitude. It is the behavior of students.

Accountancy Business and Management. An academic track provided by the

government to specify students’ perception in choosing their careers.


Conceptual Framework

Take note that the paradigm shown in Figure 1 makes the study's variables clear.

The first variable in the image is the potential reasons why students might fail the course

FABM. The second is the students' learning methods for mastering the subject in

question, particularly their metacognitive abilities. It will be possible to relate these

variables and confirm that, yes, the existing factors of students' failure can be mitigated or

the number of failing students can be decreased through the learning strategies or

metacognitive skills that the researcher will be focusing on, assuming that other factors

remain constant throughout the course of the study.
