Direction: Solve the problems using your own handwriting. Make your solution organized
by presenting it according to the order of the required and place your final answers in a
box. Scan your solutions in a PDF format and submit together with the questionnaire.

1. The intake of the compressor of an air-standard Bryton Cycle is 35,000 ft3/min at

14 psia and 95 0F. The compressor ratio is 4 and the temperature at the turbine
inlet is 1500 0F. The exit pressure of the turbine is 14 psia. Determine the following:
a. Volume if air at turbine exit, ft3/s
b. Work Net, hp
c. Mean Effective Pressure of the turbine, psi.

2. A steam generator uses coal as fuel and has the following Dry Analysis:
S = 1.40% O2 = 3.18% N2 = 1.58%
H2 = 5.28% C = 88.56%

Coal is consumed at the rate of 12,000 kg/hr. Combustion air is at 32 0C and 100
kPa also requiring 25% excess air for complete combustion. The primary fan is
70% efficient and working against a total head of 50m. On the way to the chimney,
the flue gas is estimated to be at 300 0C and moving at the rate of 7.5 m/s.
Calculate the following:
a. Mass flow rate of the supplied air
b. Volume flow rate of the wet flue gas going to the chimney.
c. Dew point temperature of the wet flue gas
d. Power input to the fan
e. Dimension of the chimney considering 3cm WG draft and 0.4 velocity
coefficient, (H and D).
