Desiderata: Reflection

The only person who can define happiness is the person who is trying to define it because
different people have different definitions of what happiness is. Some people gave this
simple word a complex meaning. It even is divided into two components: eudaimonic and
hedonic, but for me, happiness simply means to be able to feel the freedom of being oneself
and being free from fear and anxiety. Life is never easy and as young as I am, I realized that.
That is why the thought of being able to indulge in luxuries, being able to travel to places
and meet people and many other pleasurable situations, never crosses my mind. Because in
this world filled with negativity, being free is a euphoric feeling.
Desiderata is poem I have read before when I was in 9th grade, it is full of lessons that
teaches the readers different values. One lesson I found was learning to let go of the
negativity, this includes toxic people, emotions and thoughts. This is a lesson I need to
learn and I want to share because only by truly letting go of the negativity can we reach the
tranquility and peace within ourselves and with the people around us. With this, we will
be able to be truly happy with ourselves. Our minds are clouded by negativity, which
impairs our judgment and perspective on life and makes us bitter and anxious. It's as if
those are tying us up, making it impossible for us to be content and happy.

Today's world is filled with negativity. It is killing life and taking away the freedom to be
one's true and authentic self. One of those who let it to overwhelm them is me. But when I
absorbed the lesson of the poem, I realized that stress and exhaustion weakens my mind
and body. It is having an impact on me, and I understood that the fears I currently have but
did not experience as a youngster are a result of the toxic views I have about myself.
Desiderata taught me to enjoy life and the delights of youth without hurting others. It
made me realize how absurd it is to compare yourself to others and how silly it is to
constantly think of yourself as superior or inferior when we are all on an equal footing.

We can free ourselves from our invisible chains by letting go of the burdens we carry. It
removes the heavy feeling by lifting up the hurt and rage we are feeling. Letting go makes
us happy and enjoy the positive moments without any worries. As a result, we will be more
honest and upbeat about our feelings, judgments, and outlook on life. Let go and let us be
happy.
