English Exam Level: L3

Name: BOUABDALLAH Farah Samiha Group: 02

Text:

It is the cornerstone of modern biotechnology. It is based on scientific tools, developed in recent

decades, that enable researchers to: identify the gene that produces the protein of interest, cut the
DNA sequence that contains the gene from a sample of DNA and Place the gene into a vector, such
as a plasmid or bacteriophage, use the vector to carry the gene into the DNA of the host cells, induce
the cells to activate the gene and produce the desired protein and finally, extract and purify the
protein for therapeutic use.

It allows scientists to manufacture molecules that are too complex to make with chemistry. This
has resulted in important new types of therapies, such as therapeutic proteins. Therapeutic proteins
include those which are known as Monoclonal antibodies, Peptibodies and vaccines as well as ones
that are used to replace or augment a patient’s naturally occurring proteins, especially when levels of
the natural protein are low or absent due to disease. They can be used for treating such diseases as
cancer, blood disorders, rheumatoid arthritis, metabolic diseases, and diseases of the immune system.

Questions:
1-The text is about:
a-antibodies and vaccines b-manufacturing molecules
c-the role of proteins d-genetic engineering

d- New modes of treatment give drug developers more options in determining the best way to
counteract a disease. true
3- Find in the text the words corresponding to the following definitions
a- A DNA molecule used as a vehicle to artificially carry foreign genetic material into another cell.
→ therapeutic proteins
b- A living body invaded by or capable of being invaded by an infectious agent such as a
bacterium or a virus.→ molecules
c- A group of two or more atoms that form the smallest identifiable unit into which a pure substance
can be divided and still retain the composition and chemical properties of that substance.→ DNA
4-How many passive sentences are there in the text? Choose the best answer:

a-2 b-3 c- 5 d-7

5-Classify the underlined words in the text according to their final “s” pronunciation

/S/ /Z/ /IZ/

Scientists, Tools, researchers, Produces, therapies, diseases

6-Complete the following passage with words from the text

When segments of DNA are cut and pasted together to form new sequences, the result is known as
recombinant DNA. When recombinant DNA is inserted into host cells they use this modified
blueprint and their own cellular machinery to make the protein encoded by the recombinant DNA.
Cells that have recombinant DNA are know as genetically modified or transgenic cells.
