ENGINEERING UTILITIES 2

MODULE 1 ASSESSMENT 1

INSTRUCTIONS: Follow each instruction carefully.

1. Write in ENGINEERING LETTERING.

2. Create a front page for your homework that consists of the following:

a. Heading (Center Alignment):

i. Course/Section

ii. ME22

iii. Engineering Utilities 2

iv. MODULE # ASSESSMENT #

b. Body (Left Alignment):

i. Name

ii. Program and Year

iii. Student Number

iv. Date of Submission

c. Bottom (Center Alignment):

i. Name of your instructor

3. Draw margins on every page with the following dimensions: left side is 1”; top, bottom and right is
½”.

4. Copy each problem and draw the illustration if necessary.

5. Follow the Given, Required, Formula, Solution Format in answering each problem. Box your final
answer.

6. Staple the compiled pages of the Homework on top, middle and bottom part of the left side of the
paper.
1. The reactive force developed by a jet engine to push an airplane forward is called
thrust, and the thrust developed by the engine of a Boeing 777 is about 85,000 lbf.
Express this thrust in N and kgf.

2. A 3-kg plastic tank that has a volume of 0.2 m3 is filled with liquid water. Assuming the
density of water is 1000 kg/m3, determine the weight of the combined system.

3. Consider a system whose temperature is 68°C. Express this temperature in R, K, and

°F.

4. The boiling temperature of water decreases by about 3°C for each 1000-m rise in
altitude. What is the decrease in the boiling temperature in (a) K, (b) °F, and (c) R for
each 1000-m rise in altitude?

5. A 200-pound man has a total foot imprint area of 72 in 2. Determine the pressure this
man exerts on the ground if (a) he stands on both feet and (b) he stands on one foot.

6. The absolute pressure in water at a depth of 5m is read to be 145 kPa. Determine (a)
the local atmospheric pressure, and (b) the absolute pressure at a depth of 5m in a
liquid whose specific gravity is 0.85 at the same location.

7. Air enters a nozzle steadily at 2.21 kg/m³ and 30 m/s. What is the mass flow rate
through the nozzle if the inlet area of the nozzle is 80 cm².

8. A pump discharges into a 3-m-per-side cubical tank. The flow rate is 300 liters/min,
and the fluid has a density 1.2 times that of water (density of water= 1000.0 kg/m3).
Determine (a) the flow rate in kg/s; (b) the time it takes to fill the tank
