you will be reading later. You may ask assistance from your
learning facilitator to check if you have read them correctly.

- other animals - into the water
- when you paddle - cried the fox
- was never satisfied - with kinder words
- trick on their friend - answered the turtle

9
Have you heard of a fox teaching other animals to swim?
Read the fable below.

The Fox who Gave Advice

A fox sat everyday on a riverbank teaching the fish, ducks,

turtles, and other animals how to swim. He instructed them, “My
friends, relax your bodies when you paddle.”
No matter how well they swam, the fox was never satisfied.
“Practice more until you perfect your swimming!” shouted the fox.
One day, the animals decided to play a trick on their friend.
“We will paint our shells with mud so that they will look like rocks,”
said the turtles to their friends.
Then, the turtles waited for the fox on the riverbank. The fox
thought that the shells were rocks and sat on them. The turtles
crawled toward the river and dumped the fox into the water.
“Please, help me! I’m drowning,” cried the fox to the animals.
“Promise to teach us with kinder words,” answered the turtle.
“I promise!” said the fox.

The Golden Rule

Adapted from English Encounters: Reading 3
A long time ago, there lived a couple who had a son. The
grandfather, the husband’s father, happily lived with the said
couple for many years, too. But, when the grandfather grew very
old, he became very feeble. Every time he would eat at the table,
he would always break a plate and scatter food on the floor
because his hands trembled. The old man’s awkwardness soon
made his son angry. So one day, the son carved out from a
coconut shell a wooden plate for his aging father where he could
eat all his food and not break again any of their fine plates.

The grandson, who deeply loved his grandfather and who

was afraid to speak against his father, noticed everything that was
happening. The next day, he took some tools to their backyard.
There he took a piece of tin and began to shape it. When his
father saw him, he asked his son, “What are you doing?” the boy
replied to him, “Father, I am also making some plates for you and
mother to use when you are old – just like the way you did with
grandfather.”

13
As the son uttered these words, tears gushed from the
father’s eyes. From that time on, the old man was allowed to eat
at the table with the rest of the family; never was he made to eat
from the wooden plate again.

Let Us Remember

Reading is more fun when you can read familiar words and
phrases in a text. In order to improve your reading skill, you have
to engage yourselves in reading different literary texts or genres
like fable and poem.

If you still have difficulties in reading, I encourage you to

practice every day. You may start from three letter-words or
words with blended consonants and digraphs. The more you
practice, the easier you can improve your speed in reading,
thereby making you a fluent reader.

Let Us Assess

Activity 7: “Missing One other”

DIRECTIONS: Read the dialogue of three friends talking to one

other, then answer the activity that follows.

The Teleconference

Ariane : Hi, there Kim! I’m so glad to talk to you after

months of being locked down in our home.

Kim: Yes, I’m glad to see you too and this video
conferencing is so cool. I never experienced
something like this before.

Rexter: I heard that enrolment will start on June 1 to June

30. Are you excited?

Ariane: I’m so excited for the school year to start. I got

bored already watching TV all day.

15
Kim: As for me, I don’t know yet. We don’t have an
internet connection at home. I have to go to the
internet vendo machine to get a connection.

Ariane: That’s not a problem, Kim. I’ve read in social

media that schools are offering various modalities
in delivering the lessons.

Rexter: Yes, since you don’t have an internet connection,

you can choose modular learning where teachers
will be giving us modules to study at home.

Kim: Well, I think that’s great! I can learn at my own

pace at the convenience of our home.

Ariane: Sure you can, Kim.

Kim: I think my mother will be happy about that. Ok

then, until our next video conference, guys.

Ariane& Sure, Kim. See you next time! Bye!

Rexter

December 10, 2019

Calinan, Davao City
Dear Mel,
You won’t believe what I ate for lunch today. My brother
and I tried out this new Persian Canteen that opened up two
blocks from here. They serve delicious barbecue kebabs and
different kinds of curry. But the greatest part was the ox brain! We
shared a dish of ox brain and at first I thought it was really weird. It
was soft and yellow. I took a bite and I loved it! It tasted a lot like
scrambled eggs except mushier. It was served with a plate of
flatbread and we felt like we were eating a second breakfast. I’m
sure you would have loved it, too. When you come home, maybe
we can go there again.

Let Us Reflect

There are plenty of reading materials that you can use to

help you improve your reading skill. What you need to do is to
clearly understand that when you are able to read well, you won’t
have difficulty in learning your lessons in school.

Who can help you improve your reading skill? Yes, you need
somebody to assist you. But, always remember that you also must
have that willingness to learn. It is only through reading that you
will know many things and discover new things. So, be patient to
practice reading every day.
