National identity began to change as the United States began to grow overtime as a

country. There were two new identities which became known as Federalists and Anti-Federalists
which were very opposite from one another. The Anti-Federalists did not support the new
Constitution while the Federalists supported the idea of the new constitution. The
Anti-Federalists supported the Articles of Confederation and wanted less of a central
government. However, the Federalists liked the idea of a centralized government. This led to the
Bill of Rights being passed by the Federalists which allowed people to have freedom in this. The
passing of this bill also allowed both parties to agree with each other.
The challenges that were given with the Articles of Confederation were the main reason
why the Federalists wanted a central government. The idea that a central government would be
able to run the country better and help with laws was a common belief. Another belief that they
had was having control and power with the army in one place to help the conflicts and debt. The
Anti-Federalists opposed this and believed that this power should be given to the people and the
states. They believed people should have more power because they did not want a central
government to take all power and misuse it. Additionally, the Bill of Rights was created for this
reason so that people could not be taken advantage of by the government.
During the delegations, the Federalists and Anti-Federalists disagreed upon many topics
and ideas that the Federalists brought up. The Anti-Federalists disagreed with the idea of a
National bank to manage and take control of the country’s money. They also wanted to grow the
country’s wealth and to pay off state debts. The Anti-Federalists disagreed with this and believed
that the government had too much control over the people and feared that this could lead to the
abuse of power.
The anti-federalists also did not agree with the idea of a president. They feared that it was
too similar to what the monarchy was like in Britain and feared abuse of power. With that, they
did want to have any interaction with the British, even when it came to trade. The federalists on
the other hand wanted to trade with the British to help the country grow more easily and gain
more wealth.
In conclusion, The Federalists and Anti-Federalists did not seem to agree on much
together and were very opposite from each other. Similarly today, we have the Republican and
Democratic parties. Federalists are similar to democrats due to their beliefs in a central
government and having more taxes. The Anti-Federalists represent the Republican due to their
belief in not having a strong central government. These two parties similarly have disagreements
with each other like the Federalists and Anti-Federalists did.
