Music World

On 1 November 2022, I conducted research on what kind of music today's young people
listen to. My main goal was to find out what is most popular.
I surveyed seventeen teenagers and I asked them eight music-related questions. The average
age is 20.1 years old. The questionnaire was sent online, regardless of gender, using a
web-based questionnaire. The results were surprising and I will discuss them below.

The first question showed that 17 out of 17 people listened to music, because the question
was whether they listened to music. This was not unexpected, but the answers to the second
question were mixed. My question was about what kind of music they listen to. Here they
could choose three out of 12. The results are as follows: pop music is listened to by 21.1%,
hip-hop music comes second with 16.9% and rap is the third most popular with 14.1%. Disco
music did not go out of fashion either, with 12.7%, and rock music also did well with 9.9%. I
was surprised that nowadays there are still people who listen to jazz music, because jazz got
7%. What is less favourite is soul music with 5.6%, country, folk and funk both got 2.8%. But
in last place is rhythm and blues with 1.4 votes, and 2.8% voted that they listen to something
else that was not among the options.
In the third question, which was about how often they listen to music, the most voted
answer clearly was ‘every day’ with 82.4%, 11.8% said ‘it depends on the mood’ and only
5.9% responded that they listened to music often.
In the fourth follow-up question, when I asked where they listened to music, they voted
100% for the phone. A disappointing 0% chose radio and record player, which means they
are not used as much.
In question 5, I asked what time they listen to music. 70.6% said it did not matter and 29.4%
replied that they listen to music in the evening.
For the sixth question, everyone gave their own answer as to why they enjoy listening to
music. The most common answer was: it makes me happy, relaxes me, helps me to calm
down. The least common answers were: gives me goosebumps, changes my mood and ‘that
music is life’.
The seventh question was about the language in which they listen to music. Several answers
were possible. English is the most popular language with 31.3%. Hungarian came second
with 22.9%, Slovak and ‘something else’ third with 16.7%.
In the last question I wanted to know who they think is the most famous person in the music
world. Here were type in answers, they could vote for more than one person. In first place
was Michael Jackson with 5 votes, in second place Justin Bieber and Freddie Mercury with 4
votes, and in last place Eminem and Harry Styles with 3 votes.

In conclusion, this survey showed that the reason why young people are listening to music
these days is mainly because it gives them a sense of relaxation and happiness. As it turns
out, pop music is the most listened to in 2022, but even older genres such as jazz and folk
have not been forgotten. We also have found out that young music lovers still believe that
Michael Jackson and Freddie Mercury are universally known, but that their contemporaries
Justin Bieber and Harry Styles are also household names. As the majority of the people asked
have Hungarian as their first language, it is not strange that they listen to music in Hungarian,
but Slovak and other languages are also very popular, but English music is the most listened
to.
