Some Technical Definitions:

Term Definition
Alligator Cracks Interconnected cracks forming a series of small blocks resembling an
alligator’s skin or chicken wire
Blow-up The localized buckling or shattering of a rigid pavement occurring usually in
transverse crack or joint.
Bleeding or The upward movement of asphalt in an asphalt pavement resulting in the
Flash Point formation of a film of asphalt in the surface.
Crack A separation of the pavement due to natural causes, traffic action or
reflection from an underlying pavement.
Potholes The bowl-shape holes of varying sizes in the pavement resulting from
localized disintegration.
Reflection Cracks A crack in asphalt overlay that reflects the crack pattern in the pavement
structure underneath
Raveling The progressive separation of aggregate particles in a pavement from the
surface downward or from the edge inward
Slippage Cracks A crack sometimes crescent shaped that point in the direction of the thrust of
the wheels on the pavement surface, caused by the lack of bond between
two pavement layers.
Skid Hazard A condition that might contribute to making a pavement slippery.
Bird Baths Minute depressions on pavement in which rain water are collected.
Dowel Serves as load transfer device and are held in position parallel to the surface
and to the centerline of the slab (pavement) by a metal device. May be oiled
or painted.
Compaction The practice of artificially densifying and incorporating definite density into
the soil mass by rolling, tampering and other means.
Field Density Test A widely used as a control test to embankment construction to ensure
adequate compaction.
Ottawa Sand or The sand used to measure the volume of hole in FDT.
Calibrated Sand
Berm A provision along the slopes of high embankments that serves as erosion
control measure and the same time to improve the stability of the side
slopes.
Job Mix Formula The primary quality control mechanism for the production of asphalt
mixtures.

Marshall Stability The most commonly used method in the design and evaluation of bituminous
Method concrete mixes.
Design Mix The process to determine the relative proportions of cement, aggregates and
water for concrete mixtures.
Trial Mix The process to determine the exact proportion of the mat’ls for the concrete
mixture prior to production/construction
Slump Test The test (common method) used to determine the consistency and
workability of fresh concrete.
Penetration Test The new method used to test the workability of concrete.
Workability Refers to the uniform mass of fresh concrete that can be handled with ease
without segregation when placing into final position.
Water-cement The single factor that affects the strength of concrete.
Base Specified or selected materials of designed thickness placed as foundation for
pavements.
Sub base Specified or selected materials of designed thickness placed as foundation for
the base.
Sub grade materials The materials in excavation (cuts), embankments (fills) and embankment
foundations immediate below the layer of sub base, base or pavement and to
such depth as may affect the structural design.
Corrugation A form of plastic movement typified by ripples across the pavement surface.
Shoving A form of plastic movement resulting in localized bulging of the pavement
Rutting Longitudinal surface depression in the wheel path.
Raveling (2) The wearing away of the pavement surface caused by the dislodging of
aggregate particles.
