CHAPTER 01

INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

Providing supervision or guidance to students who use social media is

important in order for the students to become responsible for their use of social
media. If there is no guidance, students will become more addicted and will
forget how to limit their use of social media.

Social media are interactive technologies and digital channels that allow
people to share information, ideas, and other kinds of expression through virtual
communities and networks.

Users of social media platforms can have conversations, share

information, and create web content. Blogs, micro-blogs, wikis, social networking
sites, photo-sharing sites, instant messaging, video-sharing sites, podcasts,
widgets, virtual worlds, and other forms of social media exist.

According to Manning (2014) , "social media is the term often used to

refer to new forms of media that involve interactive participation.

According to Tuten and Solomon (2015), “Social media are the online
means of communication, conveyance, collaboration, and cultivation among
interconnected and interdependent networks of people, communities, and
organizations enhanced by technological capabilities”.

According to Pop Culture Universe, "Social media is an umbrella term

that refers to all online communities or publications that foster and encourage

conversation between users and allow them to develop, critique, publish, and
interact with a vast array of online content."

Students must be more responsible when it comes to social media use

because it can affect their performances, as well as their behaviors in online
media’s. A good performance result is dependent on taking on enough
responsibility.

According to the findings of researchers, students are getting

increasingly careless, and many of them have exceeded their limits. As a result,
they are causing problems on social media that can truly affect their
performances.

Social networking sites and applications are widely used by students.

They spend a lot of their time on these sites as a part of their daily lives. Studies
revealed that among the various age groups of students, university students are
among the most using social networking (Azizi et al., 2019).

Social networking sites play a very important role in education. Indeed,

students are afforded multiple opportunities to improve learning and access the
latest information by connecting with learning groups and other educational
systems (Greenhow and Robelia, 2009).

Students can also exchange information by connecting with different

individuals. This can have a positive impact on student learning outcomes (Yu et
al., 2010).

Social media also has an impact on student mental health; which refers to
their emotional, psychological, and social well-being. Students spend a lot of their
time on social media both during the day and at night, and it can be contended

that such technologies play an important role in their daily lives. However,
despite their tremendous contributions to knowledge acquisition, there is a need
to determine whether such technologies are being used to gain knowledge or for
other purposes that may lead to the harmful effects of technology misuse.”

Social media has more adverse effects than positive ones (Woods and
Scott, 2016). Since students tend to spend more time on social media other than
educational purposes; this tends to cause distraction from the learning
environment, affecting their academic progress (Bekalu et al., 2019,
Hettiarachchi, 2014).

Further, spending a lot of time on social networking sites can lead to a

sedentary lifestyle and a decrease in daily physical activity levels, which in turn
can render them vulnerable to non-communicable diseases such as obesity,
diabetes, and hypertension (Melkevik et al., 2015, Zou et al., 2019, Hu et al.,
2001).

Additionally, social media use has negative effects on mental health and
can lead to depression and anxiety. Therefore, because of the growing numbers
of such sites and high demand for social media among students, it is important to
examine the purposes for which social networking sites are used.

Statement of the Problem

This study aimed to determine how social media can influence student’s
learning.

Specifically, the study sought to answers to the following questions:

1) How social media influences the daily lives of students?
2) What are the reasons why learners are active in social media?

3
ARINGAY NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL - SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL
ACCOUNTANCY, BUSINESS AND MANAGEMENT

3) What are the insights of learners about social media?

4) What are the effects of social media engagement of learners to the academic
performance of learners?

Scope and Delimitation

This study was conducted at Aringay National High School, specifically
among the junior and senior high school learners.
The story was delimited to determining the effects of social media to the
academic performance of the learners. It defines how social media influences
their lives and why are they always active in social media. In addition, it also
defines the insights of learners about social media and their life experiences
using social media platform. Lastly, the study determined the effects of social
media in the students learning habits and how it can help them in their school
works.

Importance of the Study

The researchers find the study beneficial to the following:

The School. This study will help the school be aware of the use of social media
and be able to make necessary adjustment for teachers employing collaborative
learning approach in their teaching-learning process.

The Teachers. The study will help the teachers to develop more appropriate
strategies in the teaching-learning process; this will enable them to choose a
suitable social media platform to make the students be more interested in
learning.

The Learners. This study will benefit the learners to be more aware if social
media is really helping them in their daily lives. Also, it would help enable them to
understand the proper use of social media and to encourage them to become
more responsible social media user.

The Researchers. The result of the study may provide future researchers to the
good use of social media and give them proper understanding of using social
media platforms to be able to use it in their daily lives.

Definition of Terms
The following terminologies were operationally defined for clearer understanding
of the study.

Social Media refers to the websites and applications that enable users to
create and share content or to participate in social networking.

Social Networking refers to the use of dedicated websites and

applications to interact with other users, or to find people with similar interests to
one self.

Social Media Platforms are used by people to publish their daily

activities, comments and photos as well as re-publish information posted by
others. The two major social media platforms are Facebook and Twitter.

CHAPTER 2

METHODOLOGY

Research Design

In this study, the phenomenology method was used. Phenomenology is

the philosophical study of the structures of experience and consciousness.
Phenomenology helps us to understand the meaning of people's lived
experience. A phenomenological study explores what people experienced and
focuses on their experience of a certain phenomenal. According to Edmund
Husserl (1859–1938), phenomenology is “the science of the essence of
consciousness”, centered on the defining trait of intentionality approached
explicitly “in the first person”.

A phenomenological study identifies the meaning of the lived experience

of individuals related to a specific phenomenon and then develops a composite
description of the phenomenon (Creswell, 2007).

In other words, it is the study of people's experiences. This design is

appropriate for this study because it focuses on what people's experiences are
with regard to the difficulties that learners face in their academic performance
because of social media.

Sources of Data

This study's population consisted of students from Aringay National High

School who are struggling with their academic performance because of social
media. Purposive sampling was used in the study to identify respondents or

participants. According to Arikunto (2010: 183), purposive sampling is the

process of selecting sample by taking subject that is not based on the level or
area, but it is taken based on the specific purpose.

Instrumentation and Data Collection

To gather necessary information from the students of Aringay National

High school, the researchers asked permission to the learners for the safety of
their personal privacy and of their identities. Moreover, the prospect respondents
will be asked for permission to share their information and they will be properly
oriented on the nature of the study.

A questionnaire consisting of (4) questions, some information papers will

be constructed for the study. The relevant questions are focused on the effects of
social media to the academic performance of school learners mainly in Aringay
National High school.

The researchers conducted the interview themselves. They used voice

message and phone camera to record the responses of the respondent to easily
facilitate the recording of information. Also, the answers of the respondent were
noted down by the interviewer.

Before the conduct of the interview, the researchers let the expert to
validate the questions that would be raised. The validator was the Practical
Research 1 teacher. The questions were approved which means that the
interview questions were appropriate. Moreover, the comment and suggestion of
the validator was highly observed.

Data Analysis

The gathered data were analyzed in order to generate a reliable and clear
interpretation. The interview method was used to determine the responses of the
learner of ANHS. The responses were thoroughly transcribed before being
submitted to cool and warm analysis to determine themes. Furthermore, axial
and emergent coding was used in the overall thematic analysis of the study.
Towards that aim, a composite diagram illustrating the impacts of social media
on academic performance of ANHS students was generated.

Ethical Considerations

As part of research standards, ethical considerations were noted. The

respondents in the research study participated on voluntary basis only. They
were never forced nor insinuated with remunerations and bribe. A waiver
expressing their volunteerism was also given. The researchers see to it that the
respondents’ welfare was a top a priority, thus names and identities were never
disclosed and that information regarding the respondents was kept confidential.
The names of the respondents were assigned with aliases and code names. The
consent of the nearest relative, in the absence of the parents, was also secured.

Social media platforms are a major source of distraction and mental

hindrance. Students nowadays often lose focus while studying and prefer to
spend their time on social media. All of this wastes time and does not result in
any learning.

They can make new friends, express their views and opinions, and
even create 'new identities' through social media networks. Social media also
introduces students to a completely new way of learning. According to studies,
students who use social media frequently are more innovative and have better
memory.

CHAPTER 4

SUMMARY, CONCLUSIONS, AND RECOMMENDATIONS

This chapter presents the summary of findings made, the conclusions

drawn, and the recommendations advanced as a result of the study conducted.

Summary

The study determined the perspectives and experiences of the learners

with social media, which are influencing their academic performance. The

qualitative research method was used in this study.

The study included twenty (20) students from Aringay National High

school. To qualify the data gathered, open-ended questions were used in

interviews.

Findings

The majority of learner respondents say social media affects their daily

lives by informing them news and school updates. However, not all students

have internet access. Furthermore, some learner respondents indicated that

virtual communication may also be a factor in how social media affects their daily

lives.

13
ARINGAY NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL - SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL
ACCOUNTANCY, BUSINESS AND MANAGEMENT
Aringay, La Union

The majority of learner respondents said they use social media to get

information they need. However, not all of the information gathered by them is

useful.

The majority of learner respondents describe social media as having both

positive and bad effects. In other words, social media offers both advantages and

disadvantages

According to learner respondents, the primary effect of using social media

on academic performance is distraction. Furthermore, they are losing focus and

concentration on their performance.

Conclusion

Social media refers to rapid and open interaction that takes place online

between individuals and communities. In addition to search engines, social

media services are among the world's most popular online services.

Social Media has both positive and negative effect through the lives of

students. It helps the learners in communicating to their teacher and loved ones.

In addition, it is also distraction to them because it makes the learners lazy

whenever they are using social media.

14

The use of social media is to gather information and data. It also gives a

lot of educational videos that helps the learners in their self-learning modules for

them to understand it well.

Users of social media platforms can also have conversations, share

information, and create web content. Blogs, micro-blogs, wikis, social networking

sites, photo-sharing sites, instant messaging, video-sharing sites, podcasts,

widgets, virtual worlds, and other forms of social media exist.

Social media has a very big impact to the students nowadays because of
the pandemic. It helps them really well to their school works for them to still be
active students in their class.

Recommendations

In light of the foregoing conclusions, the following recommendations were

offered:

The learners who are using social media platforms should be aware of
their audience and be respectful and sensitive about the content they create or
share. Academic freedom and free speech are fully respected always, but
faculty/staff/students should avoid creating or sharing content (or engaging in an
online conversation) in a manner that would compromise the school’s safety,
exhibit malicious intent, or violate the school’s policies.

15
ARINGAY NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL - SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL
ACCOUNTANCY, BUSINESS AND MANAGEMENT

Usage of social media has a very great advantage especially the

education now is distance learning opportunities. The teachers should be use
various online tools along with social media, so that they can attract more
learners to be interested in the distance learning.
