TEAM EFFECTIVENESS SCALE

Introduction

Team effectiveness is the capacity of a group of people, usually with complementary skills, to work
together to accomplish goals set out by an authority, members, or leaders of the team. The basics of
team effectiveness were identified by J. Richard Hackman, a pioneer in the field of organizational
behaviour who began studying teams in the 1970s. In more than 40 years of research, he uncovered
a groundbreaking insight: What matters most to collaboration is not the personalities, attitudes, or
behavioural styles of team members. Instead, what teams need to thrive are certain “enabling
conditions.” Some of the key factors that can be used for determining the effective team are final
outputs produced by a group; the consequence of the group success for each team member, and the
increased potential to perform the tasks effectively in the future.

In this test the following dimensions of team effectiveness are measured:

● Purpose and goals
● Roles
● Team processes
● Team relationships
● Intergroup relations
● Problem solving
● Passion and commitment
● Skills and learning

Aim

To measure the team effectiveness of the examinee and the group.

Materials

1. Team Effectiveness Scale

2. Scoring key & norms
3. Writing materials

Plan

Measure the team effectiveness of the group by administering team effectiveness scale.

Procedure

Seat the examinee comfortably in well ventilated room and instruct him/her thus, “Read the
statements carefully. Each statement has 5 options (Strongly agree, Agree, Neutral, Disagree,
Strongly disagree) and each option is denoted with a number (5, 4, 3, 2, 1 respectively). Choose the
options that rightly display yours and your team’s attributes in working together to achieve common
goal.” With these instructions allow the examinee to make his/her responses as quickly as possible.

Precautions

1. There is no time limit to complete the test. But examinee has work as quickly as possible by
marking the first response for the statement.
2. Examinee has to mark the responses considering the fact how they or their team works in
completing the task.
Analysis of Results

1. Identify the average score for the examinee and the group on each dimension of the test.
2. Find out the overall team effectiveness score for the group.
3. Compare performance of your team with other teams.

DISCUSSION

Theoretical Expectation

The 8 dimensions measured by the scale contribute in understanding our ability to work with team
as well as areas for improving. Low average score on these dimensions indicates improvement. The
comparison score on team effectiveness allows measuring our rank with other teams on
effectiveness.

Conclusion

Application Value

1. Contributes in measuring one’s ability to work in teams

2. To identify team dimensions that need to be improved to increase team effectiveness
