Understanding Self
Understanding Self
-refers to the body, this marvellous container and complex, finely tuned, machine with which we
interface with our environment and fellow beings. This also refers to the concrete dimension, the
tangible aspect of the person that can be easily and directly observed and examined. Moreover, the
physical self refers to what kind of body we have, color of the hair and skin, body structures and more
others.
- is the individual's perception of themselves in areas of physical ability and appearance. Physical ability
includes concepts such as physical strength andendurance, while appearance refers to attractiveness
- physical self is not only limited and focused on how you look, not just about your hair, abs and curves.
But, this is also about on how you nourish your self-image, self- concept and self- esteem. To further
explain and expand our ideas, self- image refers to abilities, appearance and personality that one
possessed, self -concept is an idea that one’s self is constructed from the beliefs one holds about oneself
and the responses of others and self- esteem refers on how much you appreciate and like yourself.
“LOVE YOURSELF—ACCEPT YOURSELF—FORGIVE YOURSELF—AND BE GOOD TO
YOURSELF, BECAUSE WITHOUT YOU THE REST OF US ARE WITHOUT A SOURCE MANY WONDERFUL
THINGS.”
-Leo F. Buscaglia
DIFFERENT VIEWS OF ONE’S PHYSICAL SELF
Views on one’s physical self-vary from one person to another. Besides, an individual is believed to be
beautiful the moment he/ she accepts himself/ herself fully. Basically, physical self is the appearance of
an individual that can be seen by the naked eyes but it is not limited and doesn’t end that way.
SELF
Health, Social Care and Children’s Services discussed eight (8) factors that influenced on the change of
view of one’s physical self. The following factors are: age, appearance, gender, culture, emotional
development, education, relationships with other people and life experiences. Moreover, the author
considered of giving related studies and explanations to further supplement the learning of the
students.
Age- views on one’s physical self-changes during the individual’s life span.
Further studies concluded that age has direct relationship as to individuals physical self- concept and
physical fitness. Moreover, as you mature means the more careful you are with your physical aspect.
You’re getting more sensitive in giving care and protection to your body. However, growing older is
accompanied by a systematic decline of physical fitness. Hence, maintaining a positive sense of physical
self when getting older might be one of the most important challenges adults engaged in physical
activities.
Appearance- you become more conscious with the appearance you have forsuch reason that
appearance affects self- esteem and self-confidence. Appearance dictates the level of how people will
judge and justify you in the society. In some cases, surgeries, beauty products and other methods of
beautification were used just to make you more acceptable. This is a sad reality but people labeled
respect with one’s appearance. The more beautiful you are, the more respect you can have.
Gender- gender roles become more salient in adolescence. There are scientific evidences that girls have
positive perception at an early age however, as they go old they tend to have a decrease in self-
confidence and acceptance of their physical self (Orenstein, 1995). The role of women insociety may be
among the factors behind this decline in female self- esteem. Thus, the observation of what happens in
their surroundings; take the girls to infer that their social role is secondary to that played by men. On the
other hand, Crain (1996) insisted that it is indispensable to remember that the gap.between boys and
girls about the different facets of self- concept is not exceedingly large, and thus such theories have a
limited scientific and educational significance. Girls and boys are more alike that different and
divergence between male and female are fairly consistent with gender labels.
Culture- one’s culture varies across borders. Also, defining beauty along with the concept of physical self
is much different. Our physical self, which includes our perception of ourselves and our own body and
the manner in which we feel about our body is influenced by a variety of factors, culture, for instance is
one of the examples. Understanding how each of these areas impact how we feel about our body is
important for us to create and build a positive body image and physical self. Indeed, the culture in which
we are surrounded by has a significant impact on how we feel about ourselves and the manner in
which we think about our body. Many cultural traditions also contribute to body image and can
influence both negative or positive body image and selfesteem. Depending on the culture and overall
emphasis of traditions involved, a person may find their surroundings either conducive to or resistant to
thebuilding and development of a healthy body image and self- esteem.
Emotional development- basically, this refers to the ability of someone or an individual to distinguish,
express and manage feelings on a particular scenario or situation at different stages of life and to have
that empathy(to put oneself in someone’s shoes) for the feelings of other people. The development of
emotions which includes both positive and negative has large role and big significance on how an
individual will perceive his/ her physical self. Moreover, the more emotional stable an individual, the
more capable he/ she to have a positive and presentable physical self towards other people.
Education- is a vital feature for interpersonal development. Also, academic achievements by individual
at school as well as parental guiding and social interaction, are factors conforming the individual’s
physical self. The more learning you have acquired and attained through formal, non- formal and
informal education the more ideas and inputs you can use. Additionally, the more educated you are, the
more beautiful you are. Remember that intelligence is sexy.
Relationships with other people- strong and positive relationship is proven to affect one’s mental and
physical well- being. Supportive to this, the benefits of good and strong social connections and
relationship along with good mental health are numerous. Also, healthy relationships can strengthen
one’s physical self. Moreover, the more accepted you are by your family, friends and by the society, the
more pleasing physical self-one can project.
Life experiences- your experiences either positive or negative helps you develop your physical self. For
an instance, the more engaged you are with labor work, the more developed is your body. As the term
“sex” and “gender” are often used interchangeably, it is important for uto learn and understand the
difference between the two.
Charice Pempengco was biologically identified as a female. However, as to her personal preferences,
Charrice changed her name to Jake Zyrus. He undergone surgeries to remove his breast and even took
steroids to masculiniize his voice inorder for him to be identified by the society as a man. As well as,
Rustom Padilla who turned to be BB Gandanghari. Rustom Padilla was known to be an action movie
start and even had lived in with Carmina Villaruel. However, as he eventually identified himself and
proclaimed that he was a woman living in a man’s body and does operation of becoming a woman. They
are just one of the few who discovered themselves of becoming a unique individual different with the
way the society and their in born preferences have identified and expected them to act. This different
orientation shows us and explains how people deal with their physical self. Regardless of what culture or
traditions they may be, their interpretation of their selves will be how they will act in the community.
Human Sexuality
• FEELINGS ABOUT OURSELVES: our maleness or femaleness, the sexrelated roles we play in the society.
Human sexuality involves the interrelationship of a person's biological, psychological, and sociocultural
characteristics
• BIOLOGICAL DIMENSION- how our body works (genetics, hormonal production, physical maturation,
sexual arousal)
• PSYCHOLOGICAL – how you view body image (parenting, self-worth, selfesteem)
• SOCIO-CULTURAL – norms, beliefs, values (legal, ethical standards, etc)
Human Anatomy & Physiology (sex)o During the early stages of human development, the embryonic
reproductive structures of males and females are alike and are said to be in the indifferent stage.(the
embryo has the potential to develop either male or female structures) When the primary reproductive
structures are formed, development of the accessory structures and external genitalia begins. o The
formation of male or female structures depends on the presence of testosterone. Usually once formed,
the embryonic testes release testosterone and the formation of the duct system and external genitalia
follows.
o In the case of female embryos that form ovaries, it will cause the development of the female ducts
and external genitalia since testosterone hormone is not produced
o Any intervention with the normal pattern of sex hormone production in the embryo results in strange
abnormalities.
PSEUDOHERMAPHRODITES - are formed having accessory reproductive structures that do not match
their
