StarWriter, the ancestor of the LibreOffice suite, was developed as proprietary software by
Marco Börries, a German student, to write his high school final thesis." He formed a company
called Star Division to develop the software.
Quip was founded by Bret Taylor, a co-creator of Google Maps, CEO of FriendFeed, and the
former CTO of Facebook, along with Kevin Gibbs, who founded Google App Engine. Taylor
founded the company in 2012, after leaving his position at Facebook.
Microsoft is an American multinational computer technology corporation whose history started
4th April 1975. Formed by Harvard College dropout, Bill Gates and his childhood friend Paul
Allen, Microsoft has now become the biggest software company. It is also one of the most
valuable companies in the world.
An office suite is a collection of software created by the same vendor and designed to be used
for routine tasks within an organization. Typically an office suite includes applications such as
word processing, spreadsheets, presentation, email, note taking, database, collaboration and
other related types of software.
LibreOffice includes several applications that make it the most versatile Free and Open Source
office suite on the market: Writer (word processing), Calc (spreadsheets), Impress
(presentations), Draw (vector graphics and flowcharts), Base (databases), and Math (formula
editing).
Quip is a team collaboration solution which combines document and spreadsheet creation and
editing with chat and commenting capabilities, to allow teams to communicate about tasks and
projects directly while working on them.
It contains a word processor (Word), a spreadsheet program (Excel) and a presentation program
(PowerPoint), an email client (Outlook), a database management system (Access), and a desktop
publishing app (Publisher). Office is produced in several versions targeted towards different end-
users and computing environments.
