06.04 SWBS Chart
The "Somebody-Wanted-But-So" chart is an excellent way to summarize important information from
history. In it, you identify a person or group of people; their goal, need, or want; what conflict of
interest stood in the way; and the outcome. This strategy works great because history depends on
the needs, wants, and actions of humans. Use the chart to show your understanding of people,
countries, and organizations in the Korean War.
Part 1 – Complete the following chart using information from the lesson.

Part 2 – You will create four paragraphs, one for each question below. Each response must
be in your own words and in complete sentences, as well as include evidence from the
lesson.
1. How did General Douglas MacArthur react to the events in Korea? What was his stance on
the Korean War?
- General Douglas MacArthur, United Nations troops leader, was making sure the UN
troops attacked North Korea’s forces on the “Front-lines”. He finally got a hold of the
Koreans. Another thing General Douglas MacArthur wanted was to make China’s
system, democratic and political. During the war, Truman fired him because
MacArthur disobeyed him. MacArthur crossed into China, even though Truman had
told him he could not do that.
2. How did President Truman respond to the events in Korea? What was his stance on the
Korean War?
- President Truman did not want any conflicts with the North and South so his goal
was to end them as fast as he could so he could finally have that peace between
them. General Douglas MacArthur, United Nations troops leader was told to not
cross the border of China. The reason he was told this was because Truman did not
want China to join the war. MacArthur got fired due to crossing to China when
Truman had told him not to and neither the United States nor the United Nations
wanted to take over China. Since the start, President Truman did not want to start
war with China.
3. Which leader's actions were the most justifiable—General McArthur's or President
Truman's? Support your claim with evidence from the lesson.
- The leader’s actions which were most justifiable was President Truman’s. The
reason I say this is because he did not want war with China and told General
McArthur to not cross the border of China to avoid conflict, but he did and that is
what started the war. This whole thing made the war last for a longer period of time
than it should of have lasted. It was wrong of McArthur to disobey President
Truman’s commands of not going into China. If McArthur had not have done this, the
war would have had another, better ending.
4. Would the outcome of the Korean War have been different had General MacArthur not been
fired? Why or why not? Support your claim with evidence from the lesson.
- The outcome of the Korean War would not have been different if General MacArthur
had not been fired. It would be the same because of all the problems General
MacArthur had already started from before. General MacArthur was the one that did
not listen or obey President Truman when he said to not cross to China, but he did
anyways and because of him the war started. If MacArthur had not been fired, things

could have gotten way worse. The war would have lasted for much longer time and
worse things could of happened overall.
