Operation of Transmission

1 Transmission is composed of five main assemblies

1. Torque converter and pump driven section

Torque converter is a device that transmits force and
motion from engine to transmission by means of fluid.
3 Engine power is transmitted from flywheel to the impeller.
2 Impeller is the pump portion of torque converter. As
impeller rotates oil flows outward because of centrifugal
force. This oil strikes the torque converter turbine. Turbine
receives oil at its outer diameter and discharges it at its
4
center. The reaction member receives oil from turbine and
changes direction to allow correct entry for recirculation
into impeller element. This recirculation multiplies the
torque. The hydraulic pump is connected with pump
drive gear and it is driven by impeller hub gear.

2. Input shaft and directional clutches

The turbine shaft transmits power to the directional
clutches (fwd/rev). To engage the clutch, the solenoid
directs pressurised oil to the selected clutch shafts. Oil
5 sealing rings located on clutch shafts direct the oil to
the desired clutch. When clutch is released oil flows
back to the sump. The engagement of all cluches is
modulated and electronically controlled.

3. Range clutches
Once directional clutch is engaged power is transmited to
the range clutches.

4. Output section
With a range clutch engaged power is finally
transmitted to output shaft.

5. Transmission control valve

It prevents /permits oil flow to various clutches and
controls the amount of oil pressure to clutch.

Transmission cooler

Transmission cooler (1) helps to dissipate heat from the

transmission fluid.
1
- If the temperature of oil is more than 72°C then the
internal thermo shuttle valve opens and allows the oil to
flow through the cooler or else it bypasses the cooler and
allows the oil to flow directly into the transmission.
- Hot oil from transmission flows into the cooler (1) and
then flows back to the transmission.

Speed sensor

- The speed sensor is a magneto resistive sensor which

generates a square wave current with a fixed amplitude
changing between 7 and 14 mA.
- The sensor has an integrated AMP superseal 2 pin
X connector.
1 3 - The sensing distance is up to 1.8 mm.
2
Speed sensor installation

- While installing the sensor make sure the position sign

(1) on the sensor body points in the direction of the
Teeth gear teeth movement.
rotation
- Install the clip (2) at angle (X) as in table below

SENSOR TYPE ANGLE (X)

Engine speed, Drum speed and Output speed 180°
Turbine speed -90°

Pin 2 Pin 1 - Tighten the screw (3) to 12-15 Nm torque.

Following table shows the relation between wire colour,

pin number and connection.

COLOUR PIN NUMBER FUNCTION CONNECTION

BROWN 1 Current input Hot wire
BLUE 2 Current output Ground wire

Pin 2 Temperature sensor

- Material used is Silicon.

- Resistance at 25°C (77°F) = 2000 Ω ± 1%

WARNING
Wrong connections will deactivate the
Pin 1
sensor.
