Author- Arthur Conan Doyle Edition- E-Book(kindle) 1st Edition- Collier’s Magazine P.P- 307 Price- ₹55.04 (E-Book) In the story “The Engineer ‘s Thumb”, which is set in 1889, mainly consists of a young London hydraulic engineer, Mr. Victor Hatherley, attends Dr Watson's surgery after his thumb is chopped off, and recounts his tale to Watson and Holmes. Hatherley had been hired for 50 guineas to repair a machine he was told compressed Fuller's into bricks. He was shown the press, but on closer inspection discovered a "crust of metallic deposit" on the press, and he suspected it was not being used for compressing Fuller's earth. Then he confronted an employer who then attacked him and his thumb got chopped off. When they go to the location the house was on fire and the criminals had escaped. In the story “The copper beeches”, Violet Hunter got offered a governess job and decided to consult Sherlock Holmes. She even told Sherlock Holmes about some conditions like cutting her hair short and the salary was very high. She accepted the job and Holmes told her to consult him if ever needed. After some strange occurrences, she consults Holmes and finds out that someone had been living in the sealed of section of the house. Holmes, Watson and Hunter go to explore the wing and they see that no one is there. Then they were accused of letting the prisoner go which was Hunters Employers daughter. The Employer sets his dog on them which attacks the employer instead. It was revealed that the employer hired Hunter to make her enact as his daughter. He did so because he wanted to tell her daughters fiancé no longer had interest in him. Later her daughter escaped and they got married. In the story “The Beryl Coronet”, A banker, Mr. Alexander Holder makes a loan of £50,000 to a socially prominent client, who leaves the Beryl Coronet. Holder feels that he must not leave this rare and precious piece of jewelry in his personal safe at the bank, and so he takes it home with him to lock it up there. He is awoken in the night by a noise, enters his dressing room, and is horrified to see his son Arthur with the coronet in his hands. Three beryl are missing from it, and the coronet itself is already broken. Holder travels to see Holmes, who agrees to take the case. As Holmes was starting to handle the case, some peculiarities appeared. Arthur is refusing to give a statement of any kind. Holmes then found that even a strong man like him could not break the coronet without making any noise. Holmes begins to believe that Arthur didn’t take the beryl. Holmes sets about not only reviewing the details that he learns from Holder, but also examining the footprints in the snow outside. Eventually, Holmes solves the mystery, and Holder is surprised to find that his niece Mary was in league with a notorious criminal, Sir George Burwell, although she is unaware of his character. The two of them escape justice. However, Holmes is convinced that they will receive their punishment in due time. In the story “The Noble Bachelor”, Holmes goes through his mail with Watson. One letter in particular catches his attention because it's fancy looking. Holmes assumes it's an invitation to a boring party for a wealthy person. He opens the letter and it is from a well-known man named Lord St. Simon. The letter asks for Watson's expertise in solving a mystery. Since Lord St. Simon is showing up in an hour, Watson and Holmes have a cram session where they pore over all the news articles about the wedding. The story goes that Lord St. Simon comes from a wealthy family that has lost much of its wealth. He quietly announces his plans to marry Hatty Doran - the daughter of a millionaire from California. The two get married, but during the reception breakfast, the bride disappears. Just as the two wrap up their review, the infamous Lord St. Simon arrives at the door. These stories are from the famous “The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes”, which is a collection of mystery, crime and detective fiction short stories. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was a great writer of Detective stories and his most popular character “Sherlock Holmes” along with his loyal friend /foe “Dr. Watson” are the main character in this collection. This series of Short stories is really interesting and it should highly be recommended to people who seek for mystery. There are some parts in these stories that need much concentration to understand.
