A LITERATURE REVIEW ON A

SCIENCE-
FICTION SHORT STORY ENTITLED
“THE LAST NIGHT OF THE WORLD”
BY: RAY BRADLY, ORIGINALLY PUBLISHED ON ESQUIRE IN FEBUARY 1951

It is possible that one of the greatest fear possessed by humanity is the fear of death.
The main theme of this short story is the Acceptance of Death. The story was written in 1951
six years after world war 2, four years into the cold war, and one year into the korean war. The
short story begins with a casual conversation then immediately invokes to the factors involved
in what the “end of the world” would mean for the couple. Bradbury expertly addresses these
fears by disguising them as a common dream among the characters in the short story. “The Last
Night of the World” is not only forces its audience to reflect on the hypothetical of today being
the last day, it offers an idea of what is important about the time of people have on Earth. These
story will help the readers to better comprehend Bradvury’s style of Literature, a style that
directly relates to reality of the world and connects to his readers.

There is no real idea of what happens when one dies, and that terrifying uncertainty leads most
to avoid even the thought of it at all costs. But as the man discusses the dream with his wife,
they are both amazed at each others reactions to accepting the reality of knowing that the world
is coming to an end. The mans assertion in the end of the world will be like “the closing of a
book”. Throughout this story, there are a lot of generalizations and mysteries that are left
unanswered. As Bradbury writes, “do we deserve this,” “it’s not a matter of deserving, it’s just
that things didn’t work out”. This quotation shows that humanity may have its strengths, but it
will always make mistakes and can only do so much concerning the world’s problems. The
husband and wife are content to live the last night they have together as they have lived every
other night in their lives. They are proud of the way they have spent their time on earth, and
they do not feel any worry about continuing with their lifestyle for one last day.

This story reconsiders bravery and courage, both in a moment and in a lifetime. Bradbury's
storytelling leaves the reader with an extraordinary impression of ordinary acts. At the end of
the story, the reader is left asking him or herself many questions about how they would
respond to such a situation. The characters stop thinking about how the Earth will end, a sense
of calm and acceptance overtakes them. Other people seem to be reacting the same way. But it
also comes from an awareness that no one will be exempted. There is no use struggling against
something that can't be changed. Bradbury ends the story on an cryptic and suspenseful note. It
is never made clear if this night really is “the last night of the world” or not.
