PROLOGUE: Reading Assignment on Rizal the First Emo?

3 IMPORTANT THINGS I REALIZED FROM THE READING (ELABORATE)

 Typically, heroes are portrayed as tough and strong creatures who rarely display
emotion because they view it as a sign of weakness, but Rizal is an exception.
Regardless of him being public figure, his acts of heroism, or anything else, his
romantic and soft side never leaves him and remains with him until his death.
This can be attributed to his flowery and expressive style of writing. All of his
literary works are filled with strong emotions, particularly his sentiments, which
earned him the label "emo.” Furthermore, his method of writing letters to Leonor
Valenzuela, the regal beauty, is quite remarkable and romantic. His love letters
were mysteriously written in invisible ink composed of common table salt and
water, which could be read by lighting up candle or lamp. And no lover boy in
history has done more for love than Rizal. He was, without a doubt, a romantic
genius.

 What I admire most about Rizal is that he never forgets God or loses faith in him,
even as science advances. The basis for this denial of God's existence is the
scientific postulate "to see is to believe." Fortunately, this is not one of Rizal's life
principles, owing to the influence of his family, particularly his religious mother,
who taught him to honor and serve God. Even though he is already classified as
a scientist due to his depth of knowledge, he continues to believe in a single true
god. Unlike the other scientists, who are atheists and have questioned and
abolished the concept of God. According to Rizal, the mere fact that he is alive
and exists demonstrates the existence of God, and that no science can
adequately explain the origin of humans, only their creator.

 Indeed, the household environment shapes and molds an individual's attitude,

identity, and personality. Because in Rizal's case, all of his education, manner,
and perspective stem from their home, which is where true education begins.
Starting from his mother who become Rizal first teacher that opened his eyes
and heart to the world around him. Additionally, his patriotic and nationalistic
characteristics were inherited from his brother, Paciano, who was a general and
revolutionary at that time. He witnessed not only words but also action and
example in their home, most notably Paciano, who had a significant influence on
his life, inspiring him to do great things and love the motherland as well. Apart
from him funding Rizal's life in exile, it was his words of wisdom that consolidated
their passionate bond and shaped Rizal as a person. And without him, Rizal
wouldn't even be a national hero.

MY ASSESSMENT OF RIZAL THE FIRST EMO?

1. What topics about Rizal opened your mind and had relate with? Explain.

The first topic to mention is “The First Emo: A Biography of Rizal as a Romantic”. The
idea that Rizal is or was an emo piqued my interest because I was once an emo, and
while we don't always wear black, our constant reminiscing about the past and
sentiments qualifies us as emo. As with Rizal, I have sentiments about certain aspects
of life that I wish to express. While they are primarily emotional sentiments, I, like Rizal,
have national sentiments too. Additionally, the topic "Heroes Just Want to Have Fun:
Rizal's Parisian Life" is one with which I can also relate too. His capacity for enjoyment
despite his hectic and productive lifestyle is admirable. And, despite my hectic schedule,
I too never forget to have fun in order to provide rest and relaxation in my life. It is
difficult to fully concentrate on studies without taking a break. Finally, the topic "Not Born
a Hero: It Starts at Home." Before I entered school, I could barely read or write because
my father taught me at home owing to the fact that he is an educator himself, and in
Rizal's case, he already knew how to construct a poem as a result of his mother’s
teaching. Let us take this into consideration that home should be a safe and good
space for anyone, as what they get from home reflects their personality; therefore, let us
enrich home for a better learning.

2. Agree/Disagree: Rizal is the most misconstrued Filipino hero. Why/Why

not?

By far, Rizal is not the most misunderstood Filipino hero. His contribution and sacrifice
to Philippine liberty and history are sufficient enough to ensure that he is not
misunderstood, that is why he is the Philippines' National Hero. Rizal may believe in a
peaceful revolt, as demonstrated in his works, but it doesn’t made him the
misunderstood hero of all time. He was even known and regarded as the first Filipino, a
legend and the master of all, owing to his exemplary qualities and the fact that he made
a significant contribution to history through his excellent literary writings. If Filipinos
misinterpreted him, he would lose his title and status as a national hero.

3. Prove: Rizal is the most documented hero.

Rizal is the most documented hero for three reasons. To begin, Jose Rizal possessed
exceptional qualities, merits, and the determination to liberate our country from
colonizers, which earned him the title of Philippine National Hero on November 15,
1995. The second reason was the law that was implemented, Republic Act No. 1425. It
is an act to incorporate courses on the life, works, and writings of Jose Rizal, particularly
his novels Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo, into all curricula and authorizing
printing and distribution, among other things. Finally, his quotable quotes had an impact
on society as a result of his works and writings. Overall, Rizal's life became the most
documented because of his contribution to Philippine history, which enabled Filipinos to
liberate themselves from colonizers' slavery. Rizal's life is also a window into our past;
and every now and then, it is our responsibility to study the life, works, and writings of
Jose Rizal.

4. Create a topic list to research about Rizal to add in the existing literature.

The following is the list of novels, essays, and poetry by Rizal that may add to the
existing literature.

 The Diaries of José Rizal

 The Young Jose Rizal and His Slippers

 Goodbye to Leonor
 A Mi Musa
 Por la Educacion
 Canto de María Clara
 El Canto Del Viajero
 Kundiman
 Junto Al Pasig

5. Find and suggest 3 reliable writings and internet sites to further know
Rizal.

 Mi Primera Inspiracion - Jose Rizal dedicated this poem, "Mi Primera

Inspiracion," to his mother, Teodora Alonso. Additionally, he wrote this poem to
express his joy at seeing his mother released from prison, and thus dedicated it
to her. This poem demonstrated his unflinching love and admiration for his
mother. It is also his way of repaying her mother for all her sacrifices and efforts
on his behalf.

 Noli Me Tangere and El filibusterismo - His celebrated novels reflect his life's
wisdom and sentiments, his desire for reform and recognition of the futility of his
efforts, the necessity of revolution and fear of it. The novel demonstrates Rizal's
patriotic and nationalist nature, as he was willing to give his life for his beloved
motherland.

 The Story of the Moth - This work of literary fiction summarizes Jose Rizal's life
journey. Like the curious moth, Rizal also behave in this manner when warned to
avoid danger or evil. We can easily connect Rizal's martyrdom to the story's
moth's fate, because of their similarities in disobeying their parents that result in
their death.
