Your Body Type &
Imbalances
In functional & integrative medicine, symptoms never appear separate from one another.
Instead, symptoms appear in recognizable groups and patterns. The first step in restoring
health & wellness is classifying symptoms into these groups and patterns, so the inter-
relationship between symptoms becomes easily recognizable. Functional Ayurveda uses 3
body types (doshas) and 20 states (gunas) to group together and classify symptoms, with
particular attention to root causes. Usually, the patterns and tendencies identified are
chronic, leading to diseases of a similar nature again and again. After identifying your
imbalances, your practitioner will offer recommendations to counteract these tendencies,
restoring balanced health & wellness. Recommendations often include advice about which
foods to favor and avoid, as well as herbs to take. This method can be used to optimize
performance and support your body, often reducing the risk of disease, reducing the
severity of a condition, improving the prognosis, or improving the quality of life of a
person with an incurable disease.

Your results are derived from the quizzes and consultation forms information you have
provided. The more information you provide, the more accurate your results.

The information in your results is for educational purposes only and should not be used to
diagnose or treat a medical condition. We cannot guarantee accuracy of your results,
including but not limited to data entry as well as analysis. Please check with your medical
doctor before changing any aspects of your diet or lifestyle.

Your Body Type (Dosha)

People tend to get sick, over and over again, due to similar causes and habitual
imbalances that are unique to the person. Your body type summarizes this tendency,
showing you the 'type' of conditions and imbalances that frequently challenge your health
& wellness. Using body type, you can also identify remedies likely to improve your
strength and resiliency. Your body type identifies physical and mental characteristics as
well as your personal strengths and weaknesses. The calculation of your body type is
based on your medical history.

The 3 functional body types (doshas), are Catabolic (Vata), Metabolic ( Pitta), and Anabolic
(Kapha). Catabolic individuals tend to break down body mass into energy. Metabolic
individuals tend to burn or use energy. Anabolic individuals tend to store energy as body
mass. Catabolic people tend to be easily stimulated, hyperactive, underweight and dry.
Metabolic people tend to be rosy-cheeked, easily irritated, focused, driven, and easily
inflamed. Anabolic people are heavy, stable and grounded, but if they store too much
energy, they could gain weight easily and have congestion.

Based on the information you provided, your tendency is to be Anabolic (accumulates,

slow use of energy - called Kapha in Ayurveda). This tendency requires the most attention
to stay balanced. Avoid foods that are Anabolic in nature. Your tendencies to be Metabolic
(burns up, easily overheated - called Pitta in Ayurveda) and Catabolic (deficient, easily
stimulated - called Vata in Ayurveda) were nearly equal. Moderate intake of foods that
intensely aggravate these secondary tendencies. Your constitution is written Ayurvedically
as V 0P0K10

ANABOLIC (KAPHA)
Accumulates, slow use of energy

More About Anabolic Type

Dominant Characteristics

Functional Ayurveda helps you assess imbalances through 20 main characteristics (gunas).
Aggravating these characteristics weakens your body and causes imbalance. By knowing
which characteristics are habitually imbalanced in your body, you will be able to identify
and correct imbalances before you get sick. Every characteristic has an opposite which
balances it (i.e. hot balances cold). You restore balance by favoring diet and lifestyle
choices that increase the opposite characteristic.

The following characteristics are dominant in your body. Food and herbs with these
characteristics could aggravate your symptoms.

HOT
Hot is identified by increased body temperature, metabolism, or inflammation.

HEAVY
Heavy is identified by sedation, sluggishness, or increased weight.

Minimize Foods with These Tastes

Taste is used to sense the most basic properties and effects of food. Each taste has a
specific medicinal effect on your body. Cravings for food with certain tastes indicate your
body is craving specific medicinal results from food. Taste is experienced on the tongue
and represents your body's reaction to foods. Sweet taste causes physical satisfaction and
attraction whereas bitter taste causes discomfort and aversion. Kapha should use less
sweet taste while Vata and Pitta would benefit from using more sweet taste. One of the
first signs of illness is that your taste and appetite for food changes. The six tastes are
sweet, sour, salty, pungent, bitter, and astringent. Do you crave foods with any of the
tastes below?

Food and herbs with the following tastes could aggravate your symptoms.

SWEET
Sweet refers to anything builds tissue, including macronutrients such as
carbohydrates, proteins and fats.
Foods to Favor & Avoid
Here we've summarized what foods are best for you to eat and what foods are worst for
you to eat based on your unique gunas, tastes, doshas and symptoms. To help you
prioritize, we've given you a spectrum. Since you can't always make the perfect choice,
these categories empower you to make the best choice in any given situation. If you have
no choice but to eat a food that is listed as aggravating, chew it well and don't stress out
too much about it. Know that you're more frequent wise choices are laying a good
foundation for your body to heal and outweigh the occasional slip up. Stress and worry
will only aggravate a symptom further.

Very Balancing
These are likely the ideal foods for you to eat on a regular basis to bring your vital energy
back into balance. Look for or create recipes that are made up of these foods and take
note of whether or not you feel better when you stick to eating them. To keep track of
how food is affecting you, try keeping a food journal. Not every food on this list will work
for you. Pick the ones that do and favor them.

CAUSES & DEVELOPMENT

OF YOUR IMBALANCES
Have you ever heard someone say, "I feel like I'm coming down with a cold?" The
foundation of preventative medicine is a belief that diseases, like colds, start out as minor
imbalances that you can recognize and treat, before they make you sick. The achiness we
feel before we get sick is an example of an imbalance or warning sign. In western
medicine, these warning signs are called prodromal signs and symptoms. While achiness is
often a 24 hour warning sign, there are many warning signs your body gives you weeks in
advance.

Ayurvedic practitioners carefully study the development of diseases, as well as prodromal

signs and symptoms, so they can help their clients prevent illness weeks in advance.
Ayurveda's preventative technique also helps you perform optimally when you are well. No
other system of medicine offers such a comprehensive model for preventative medicine.

The basic concept is this: Whenever you repeat habits similar in nature or quality to an
imbalance, the imbalance grows in severity, and weakens your body's resistance to
disease. Conversely, when you choose foods and habits that are opposite in nature to your
imbalance, you restore balance, strengthen your body and increase your resiliency to
disease. Since your imbalances, strengths and weakness vary according to your
constitution there is no one size fits all approach. For example, it may be quite healthy for
one person to spend time in refreshingly cold weather, while a cold environment may
trigger an illness in another.

To take advantage of the preventative benefits Ayurveda offers, you'll need to study your
body type, your imbalances, and pay careful attention to the unique warning signs your
body uses to alert you of pre-disease conditions. Then, you'll have to use this knowledge
to make changes to your diet and lifestyle. Joyful Belly makes this process easy through
technology. However, there are limitations to technology. Only a qualified medical
professional can accurately diagnose and treat medical conditions. So please check with
your doctor before making any changes to your health and wellness routine.

The following sections are provided to help you understand the road-map of how
imbalances may be developing into disease in your body, from an Ayurvedic point of view.
We've broken up the disease process into various stages, called samprapti in Ayurveda, or
pathogenesis in Western medicine. To simplify this section, we've lumped the first 2 stages
of samprapti into Stage 1: Early Warning Signs in Digestive Tract and the last 2 stages of
samprapti together under Stage 4 - System Overwhelmed & Degenerative Disease. At
each stage of progress, the disease becomes harder and harder to control. The damage to
your body also becomes more and more severe. It is important, therefore, to address the
root causes, so they disease doesn't get any worse. We've presented these stages in
reverse order so that you can trace your disease conditions back to their roots.

SYMPTOMS ARE CLUES

While you endeavor to heal your symptoms, it's also important that you learn from them.
Symptoms are clues that reveal underlying imbalances. Specifically, they reveal the doshas
and qualities that may have become aggravated. If you notice a quality or dosha appears
next to many of your symptoms, it helps you establish a pattern that may be systemic. To
help you learn from your symptoms, we've linked the qualities and doshas next to each
symptom and cause below.

Key: V = Vata, P = Pitta, K = Kapha

Causes: Diet & Lifestyle Habits Provoking Your Imbalances

The chart below links each diet or lifestyle habit with the doshas and qualities it
aggravates. Habits which tend to provoke your imbalanced doshas, gunas and tastes are
listed first and have a higher relevancy score. This list contains some common causes
only. The causes that lead to imbalances are numerous, so you may be able to identify
additional causes with your imbalanced gunas, tastes and doshas on your own. You can
reduce a specific imbalanced dosha or quality by removing the habits that aggravate it
from your diet and lifestyle. To bring your system back into balance Ayurveda would highly
recommend that you remove or reduce the frequency of those habits and food choices
below that aggravate your imbalances. Please study the items below and check with your
doctor before making any changes to your health and wellness routine.

Stage 1: Early Warning Signs in Digestive Tract

These early warning signs are the first signs of imbalance in your body. These signs
generally indicate low level disorders that involve little or no tissue damage. Metabolically,
digestion is one of the most demanding processes in the body. For this reason, many of
our systemic imbalances show up in the digestive tract first. The digestive tract also
contends with anything you eat, and hosts numerous species of bacteria as well.
Therefore, the digestive tract is an ever changing environment that should be watched
closely. Ayurveda recommends paying careful, close attention to correct the warning signs
below before they weaken your body's resistance. Items listed in the preceding section
may be causing some of the imbalances listed here. Your early warning signs are:

Stage 2: Imbalance in Blood

As imbalances become more and more powerful, they move beyond the digestive tract and
begin to affect the blood chemistry. If you have symptoms in this category it means that
imbalance is systemic. The imbalances are weakening your system but with only minor
effects on organ function. The gunas aggravated in the blood are the ones that are
systemic throughout the body - and deserve special importance.

Stage 3: Weakened Tissues

If you have symptoms in this category it means that your imbalances have weakened
organs and tissues to the point where function may be compromised. However, organ and
tissue damage is still minimal. At any moment, these imbalances could overwhelm
weakened tissue and develop into degenerative disease.

Stage 4: System Overwhelmed & Degenerative Disease

If you have any of the below it means your imbalances have overwhelmed your body's
resistance causing a full-fledged disease. Once imbalance reaches this stage it is more
likely to cause acute or chronic conditions. While it is important to address conditions at
this level, it is also still important to pay attention to the more minor, early warning signs
such as gas, bloating or feeling tired after you eat. You should adapt your diet and
lifestyle to minimize root causes and early warning signs as well as address disease.
Ayurveda emphasizes a preventative approach suggesting you pay careful attention to
every stage of disease development.

YOUR IMBALANCES
The more your body is exposed to foods, lifestyle habits, and symptoms of an aggravated
dosha or quality, the more severe the imbalance becomes. Below is an image of your body
with your imbalances mapped out in terms of the part of the body they are affecting as
well as their level of severity. The larger the circle, the more symptoms you have that are
affecting that area, Generally, larger number and size of circles indicates the more severe
the imbalance. We've chosen each color to represent the nature of the imbalance. For
example, since Pitta tends to be hot, we made a pitta an orange-red color.
