1-4 Setting the printing conditions
Setting procedure
39
1 Print setting
Speed
Set the conveyor speed.
Set the conveyor speed correctly, based on the measurement using a tachometer, or the calculation of the work
speed. When the specified print speed differs from the actual conveyor speed, the character width or the print
position of characters may be different from those specified.
If the conveyor speed changes considerably, detect the speed using an encoder.
Caution
To print without using an encoder, maintain a constant conveyor speed.
Careful attention is required when the work under printing is transferred from a conveyor to
another. When the work is transferred to another conveyor, speed change or vibration may
occur, which may result in a wrong character width, or unstable printing.
If there are many types of works in length, install the printhead so that printing is possible
onto the longest work.
Thinning -- Value
Thinning is to insert an ink drop not to be used for printing between the ink drops to be used for printing, in order
to improve the print quality. It is set to the maximum available value when "Auto" is selected; accordingly,
normally select "Auto".
The thinning range is 0 to 15. However, the actual available range depends on the number of vertical dots, print
speed, and dot pitch. The larger the thinning number, the higher the print quality; however, the slower the
available print speed.
If there are any layouts where the value of pitch magnification is 2 or larger, this item is not available. "Auto" is
considered to be selected.
Thinning -- Way
Select the thinning method from "Variable" or "Constant".
Type Description
Variable Sets the thinning of each layout to the maximum available value.
Sets the thinnings of all layouts to the same value, i.e., the maximum value
Constant
commonly applicable to all layouts.
If the pitch magnification values of all layouts are 1, this item is not available. "Constant" is considered to be
selected.
40
Character height
Set the character height in 29 levels. The actual character height on a work depends on the distance from the
printhead to the work, in addition to this setting. When the distance to the work is constant, the character height
29 is about 12 times as high as the character height 1.
Density
This setting is to change the “pseudo-density” of characters to be printed. Changing this setting does not
actually make the ink thicker.
The density is controlled by printing repeatedly immediately after printing a vertical line of the dots. The setting
range is 1 to 4.
With the density 2, for example, the same content is printed once again immediately after printing a vertical line
of the dots.
"Forward" print direction: Prints from the head of the character to be printed.
"Reverse" print direction: Prints from the end of the character to be printed.
Print direction
Forward Reverse
The character orientation is to specify whether to print in an upright or inverted position by message.
Character orientation
Upright Inverted
41
1 Print setting
Print position
The print position represents the distance after the print timing is received until the actual printing starts by
ejecting ink from the head. However, the actual print position may be different from the specified position
depending on the head angle, sensor position, error of the sensor input timing, etc. In order to print correctly in
the desired print position, specify the print position in the following procedure.
C Temporarily set a desired print position, and then perform test printing.
Memo
For test printing, refer to "3-9 Maintenance information - Test printing" on page 206.
D Measure the error between the desired print position and the actually printed position.
E Iferror
the printed position is beyond the desired print position, re-set the value obtained by subtracting the
from the temporary setting.
If the printed position is before the desired print position, re-set the value obtained by adding the error to
the temporary setting.
F Repeat test printing until the desired printing position can be achieved.
42
Setting of the photocell sensor
Set the photocell sensor to start printing. In normal operation, it is turned ON only when a work passes in front
of the sensor; however, printing trouble may occur due to chattering depending on the shape and color of the
work. In this section, set the filter and monitor to prevent such trouble.
Memo
With the default simple setting, the [Photocell
sensor] button is displayed in the system setting
area on the menu screen. The [Monitor setting] item
cannot be specified with the default simple setting.
Select [Menu] > [Function] > [Printing], and then

Setting of the encoder
Set whether to use the external encoder.
Normally, it is used with the internal clock setting; however, use the encoder when the conveyor speed is not
stable. While there are "Open collector" and "Differential" type encoders to be connected, "Differential" type
connectors are recommended in terms of the noise-resistant and functional performances.
Caution
When using the encoder, the printed character may expand or overlap depending on the input
condition of the encoder pulse and the setting of the printing conditions.
51

button,
Speed-following thinning
When using the encoder, the conveyor speed changes generally.
When the speed-following thinning is set to "Apply", the maximum print quality and stable slant are achieved
by detecting the instantaneous speed while printing, and by applying the thinning as much as possible (when
the thinning is set to "Auto").
If acceleration exceeds a certain point, printed characters expand. With manual thinning, the specified thinning
number is the lower limit of thinning, and expansion of characters occurs also when no more thinning can be
applied. (To use this setting, it is recommended to set to "Auto".)
If the excessive frequency detection is set to "Apply", an excessive frequency error occurs in these cases.

MP (AM/PM character)
The AM/PM character indicates the morning and afternoon.
The AM/PM character is determined corresponding to the date and time of the calendar module currently
specified.
When AM/PM is printed in Kanji, it will be combined with the Kanji character '午 '. The change time of AM/PM
can be changed in the calendar setting.
105
2 Detailed setting
WN (Week number)
The week number is the consecutive number of weeks during a year. It is printed in 2 digits beginning with 01.
The week number is determined according to the setting value of the calendar module currently specified. The
method of calculating the week number depends on "Week start" and "First week of week number" in the
calendar setting.
Memo
If the week number based on ISO 8601 standard is needed, set as follows:
"Week start": Monday
"First week of week number": "One week including first Wednesday"
DN (Date number)
The date number, called Julian date, is assigned in units of day, where "001" is assigned to the 1st of January.
It is printed in 3 digits. The date number is determined according to the date and time of the calendar module
currently specified, and returns to "001" when the year changes. The high-order digits are filled with "0".

2 Detailed setting
Memo
If "Manual" is selected for the update mode, the content is not updated automatically at the
timing of printing. Select [Menu] > [Environment/operation] > [User button], display the "Update
calendar" field on the main screen, and then update as needed.
108
Offset calculation method
Calculate the date using the offset time currently specified, and set the date to be printed when the calculated
date does not actually exist.
Memo
If the offset time of "1 month" is set against the base time of "January 31", the offset date would
be "February 31", which does not actually exist.
This setting is enabled when "Month" or "Year" is used for the offset time, and the offset date determined by
the offset calculation method does not actually exist.
C Add the "Minute" of the offset time to the time currently specified.
If the added result exceeds "60", add 1 to the "Hour".
D Add the "Hour" of the offset time to the time currently specified.
If the added result exceeds "24", add 1 to the "Day".
E Add the "Month" of the offset time to the time currently specified.
If the added result exceeds "12", add 1 to the "Year".
F Add the "Year" of the offset time to the time currently specified.
G Add the "Day" of the offset time to the time currently set.
If the added result is larger than "31", subtract the total number of days of the month calculated in E.
If it is still larger than "31", subtract the total number of days of the next month. Repeats until it comes to
be smaller than "31". When the above calculation is made for "December", add 1 to the "Year".
H exist,
If the date determined in C to G actually exists, use the date as the specified date. When it does not
select the specified date by the offset calculation method.
If the offset time is set to "1 month", and the date after 1 month exists:
109
2 Detailed setting
If the offset time is set to "1 month", and the date after 1 month exists:
Simply, add 1 to the "Month". There is nothing to do with the setting by the offset calculation method, since the
date exists after 1 month. In such cases, the dates of March 29 to March 31 are not printed.
If the offset time is set to "1 month", and the date after 1 month does not exist:
The date to be printed is different depending on the setting by the offset calculation method.
Month end: The date of February 28 is successive for 4 days.
Carry-over: Returns to March 1 after March 3.
Month start: The date of March 1 is successive for 4 days.

Numbering module
This function is used to update and print the number whenever a work is conveyed.
Character-method numbering
Character-method numbering allows you to count with any specified letters instead of with normal numbers.
You can specify the letters to be used and their counting order (magnitude correlation) as you like. And also,
you can specify the possible range of each digit.
To use character-method numbering, Select the "Character method" in [Menu] > [Function] > [Numbering

Requirements for printing bar codes
The following requirements shall be satisfied to print bar codes in a good condition.
Requirements Description
It shall be low speed, and the speed shall not change while the work passes in front of the
printhead.
The distance between the printhead and the work shall always be maintained within 20
Conveyor mm.
The conveyor shall have no significant vibration (Roller conveyors are not applicable).
No vibration shall be transmitted to the printhead.
The work shall be of such material that ink does not run on it.
The work surface shall be flat.
Work
The work material shall have the reflectance that ensures the MRD value specified in JIS-
X-0502 (The RL value shall be 50% or more).
Air from a conditioner, etc. shall not flow between the printhead and the work.
Installation
A sufficient space for the printhead maintenance shall be ensured.

Characters to be registered
The character types to be registered are listed below by bar code type. The bar code pattern is created by
registering these character/module numbers with the bar code module.
Full-width letters that can be converted into half-width ones (of which ASCII codes are between 0x20
and 0x70) are converted into half-width ones.
Any letters which cannot be coded are removed.
For ITF, if the length of letters is not an even number, 0 is added at the end automatically.
For JAN, if the length of letters except the check digit is less than 7, 0 is added at the end
automatically so that the length will become 7. If the length is between or equal to 8 and 11, 0 is added
at the end automatically so that the length will become 12. If the length is over 12, the excess letters
are truncated.
If the function setting is configured to use character-method numbering, numbering characters
cannot be registered.
117
2 Detailed setting
Check digit
It is possible to calculate automatically and add a check digit (C/D) to the bar code. It is calculated for the entry
field where the check box is checkmarked.
Code 128
Optimization
This product does not adopt the code group A of the code 128, since the most part of them overlap with the
code group B, and the others are the special codes used for the ESC sequence, etc. Accordingly, this product
uses the code group B, and abbreviates the successive numeric part using the code group C in order to reduce
the code length, which is called optimization. For the successive numeric part of 6 digits or more, it is changed
to the code group C. With the code group C, 2 digits of numbers can be expressed by 1 character; therefore,
it is possible to reduce the code length when numbers are positioned successively.
EAN 128 compliant
In EAN 128, "FNC1" character is added to the start of the data. The "FNC1" character can be entered by
pressing the "F1" button.
With the EAN 128, the A.I. (application identifier) is put in parentheses. The parentheses are displayed with the
OCR character, but not included in the code. To print without including the parentheses in the code, enter the
"Hide" character to the front of "(" and")".
Caution
Check digits are not printed as OCR characters.
Hide character
The "Hide" character can be entered to the Code 128. The character positioned at the back of the "Hide"
character is included in OCR characters, but not in the bar code. For example, to exclude "(" and ")" from the
bar code, enter the "Hide" character to the front of "(" and ")". The "Hide" character can be entered by pressing
the "Hide" button.

2D code module
Print the 2D code pattern corresponding to the data currently registered. 20 items of 2D code modules can be
registered. The printed 2D codes are read by a scanning device, such as a reader; therefore, the print state is
very important. In particular, the read rate depends on the printing environment and the performance of the
scanning device such as a reader; accordingly, it is recommended to perform a read test in the actual operating
environment.

Calendar module calculation method
This section describes the calendar module calculation method "CM2".
Memo
Select [Menu] > [Function] > [Calendar module], and change the "Calculation method" to
"CM2".
CalendarThe calendar module is used to update the date and time, etc. automatically.
20 items of clock modules (C01 to C20) and 20 items of Use-by date modules (L01 to L20) can be registered
in the calendar module.
Caution
The basic clock for setting the date and time of each calendar module uses the system clock.
Adjust the system clock to the current time, before setting the date and time of the calendar
module. It should be noted that changing the setting of the system clock may affect the date
and time of each calendar module.
To print the manufacturing date, etc., create a message data using the clock module. To print the date and time
after the specified period of time from the manufacture date, such as the use-by date, create a message
module using the use-by date module.
While any time can be specified for the clock module, specify the offset time based on the clock module for the
use-by date module. The clock module number corresponds to the use-by date module number.
Calendar module
Prints the time as specified Prints the time obtained by adding the offset
time to the specified time for the clock module.
Memo
To use the use-by date module, be sure to check the offset calculation method. For details of
the offset calculation method, refer to "Offset calculation method" on page 134.
133

3 Maintenance
In order to use this product in a good condition, and maintain the satisfactory quality, read thoroughly this
chapter and perform the appropriate maintenance work.
This product adopts the automatic nozzle cap system using a gutter, which eliminates solidification of ink and
thus prevents the nozzle from being clogged. In addition, the automatic viscosity control mechanism and
automatic timer start function ensure the stable print state.
Even if irregular printing is seen, it can be recovered by a simple work or prevented by the daily maintenance
work.
146
3-2 Daily inspection
Checking the electrode unit and gutter for dirt
The electrode unit consists of the charge electrode, detection electrode, and deflection electrode.
If the charge electrode or detection electrode is stained with dust or ink, the ink droplets may not be formed
normally, the Alarm lamp near the display screen is turned on, an alarm buzzer is triggered, and printing is no
longer performed.
The deflection electrode or gutter stained with ink may also cause defective printing.
To check the electrode unit for stain, change to the stop mode, then remove the head cover. For details of
cleaning electrode unit, refer to "Cleaning the electrode unit" on page 156.
For details of checking and cleaning the gutter, refer to "Cleaning the gutter and the ink outlet" on page 159.

3 Maintenance
For details of checking and supplying the ink/solvent, refer to "Supplying the ink and solvent" on page 177.
Solvent reservoir
Ink reservoir
Caution
The ink has an ink-type specific expiration date under a general environment. Using the ink
beyond the expiration date may result in defective print quality. Be sure to replace with new ink
even when the ink is not consumed completely within the expiration date due to low ink
consumption. For expiration date of ink or solvent, refer to the separate"Ink compatibility table"
or description on bottle label.
Memo
The solvent is consumed about 1 litter in 250 hours on average, although it depends on the
operating conditions. This is only a standard in average printing conditions. Be sure to control
it according to the particular operating conditions.
148
Checking the insulation tape inside the head cover
The insulation tape prevents leakage of high voltage from deflection electrodes to the head cover.
Check if the insulation tape is peeling off when opening the head cover in daily maintenance.
Before peeling of the tape worsen, order replacement of the insulation tape to the nearest sales office.
Caution
Do not remove the insulation tape, even if it is peeling off.
Leakage of the high voltage would cause defective printing and may occur or inside of printhead may be
stained with ink.
149
3 Maintenance
Ink pump
If by any chance the pressure cannot be adjusted to be high enough by turning the pressure adjusting screw
of the regulator, the possible causes are as follows.
Clogging of the ink filter
Plugging of the piping
In such cases, replacing the ink filter ("Replacing the ink filter" on page 183), or cleaning the piping is required,
respectively.
150
3-4 Monthly inspection
Checking the air filter
The suction fan for cooling is located on the back of the main unit. It sucks open air into the unit, and exhausts
from the left side. Clean or replace the filter once a month, although it depends on the surrounding environment.
A commercially-available vacuum cleaner may be used for cleaning. In a site where a huge amount of dust is
contained in the air (e.g., lumber processing site), more frequent inspection is required.
For details, refer to "Cleaning and replacing the air filter" on page 185.

151
3 Maintenance
152
3-5 Inspection in severe conditions
The frequency of the periodic inspection mentioned above is not applicable to the inspection in specific severe
environments, in terms of high/low-temperature, high humidity, steam, dust, etc. Frequent and careful daily
inspection is required for use in severe conditions. For details of the respective inspection, refer to "3-2 Daily
inspection" on page 147.
Warning
Pay careful attention to prevent the ink, solvent, and/or cleaning solvent from spilling over the
skin or getting into an eye. If it spills over the skin, wash off with a lot of water, and then clean
with soap. When it gets into an eye, wash the eye sufficiently with water, and see the
ophthalmologist. For details, refer to the compatible ink list (MSDS of the ink and solvent
used).
Be sure to wear rubber gloves during the work when your hand may be exposed to ink or
solvent.
153
3 Maintenance
Removing
Remove the head from the stand, put the head in the container supplied, and then remove the head cover.
Installing
C Position the back end of the head cover to the front end
of the head, and slide the head cover in the sliding B
direction in reverse.
Caution
Do not pinch the cable from the electrode unit.
For cleaning the head, do not apply solvent
directly to the back of the cover (cable side).
Otherwise, it may cause failures.
For some ink types, the heater may warm the
gun. In such cases, careful attention is
required.
154
How to fix the electrode unit in place
For the maintenance work of the head, the electrode unit has to be opened and fixed in place. This section
describes the procedure.
C Open the electrode unit fully to the end with your fingers.
QT
C Open the electrode unit fully to the end with your fingers.
D Pull out the electrode fixing jig from the electrode fixing
jig hole with the electrode unit opened with your fingers.
155
3 Maintenance
Caution
Be sure to clean the printhead with the electrode
unit down.
156
H After cleaning, blow away cleaning solvent using the
manual pump supplied, and then dry sufficiently using a
dryer. In particular, dry carefully the gap between the
charge/detection electrodes.
Caution
If the cleaning solvent does not evaporate and
remains on the charge electrode or the detection
electrode, it may be recognized as foreign
material adhered on it, and the warning code
screen is displayed.
If drying is insufficient, characters may be printed
small, and a "charge error" may be triggered.
Memo
Using dry compressed air is effective, since it
removes the dust around the electrodes.
Precautions for using dryers
- The electric cables are vulnerable to high
temperature; therefore, keep the dryer at some
distance when it is used for drying.
- Dry the parts with hot air for about 10 seconds,
and then send cold air for about 10 seconds in
order to cool the electrodes.
- Drying time varies depending on the type of
cleaning solvent. Dry sufficiently by alternating
hot and cold air.
157
3 Maintenance
Danger
Any damage on the deflection electrode surface may cause an electric shock, or fire due to
electric leakage or discharge. Careful attention is required to prevent the electrode surface
from being damaged during maintenance, etc.
The electrode unit is designed so that any high voltage cannot be applied with the head cover
removed. However, pay careful attention just to be safe while working with the head cover
removed.
158
Cleaning the gutter and the ink outlet
The work described in this section is required in the following cases.
When checking the gutter for stain.
When the gutter is stained with ink or foreign material.
When printing is incomplete on the low deflection side.
When printing is irregular on the low deflection side.
Memo
What is the low deflection side?
With the continuous ink jet printer, characters are drawn by deflecting (bending) the ink flow by
electric force, which is normally propelled straight toward the gutter. Among the dots that make
up a character, the less deflected one (near from the gutter) is called the low deflection side
dot, whereas the more deflected one (far from the gutter) is called the high deflection side dot.
The top and bottom of characters do not necessarily correspond to the high and low deflection
sides, since they change according to the installation direction and setup of the printhead.
Open the printhead to check whether the top or bottom of characters corresponds to the high
or low deflection side.

O Reinstall the head cover according to the procedure described in "Installing and removing the head cover"
on page 154.
Memo
If any external vibration reaches the printhead, the ink flow direction may be disturbed
temporarily, and the ink may hit the gutter. As a result, some blocks of ink deposit on the
edge of the gutter. Even without vibration, the gutter is gradually stained with ink due to use
for a long period of time.
If the gutter gets stained with ink, the normal ink droplet ejection may be blocked, which may
result in defective printing (in particular, some dots are missing on the low deflection side).

Warning
While the gutter is moving, hold firmly the
nozzle plate by hand so that it does not
contact any adjacent parts. If the gutter
moves while the nozzle plate is in contact
with another part, an excessive force may be
applied to the gutter, and the gutter may be
deformed.
Caution

The main purpose of this test is to "Check whether the external devices (sequencer, personal computer, etc.)
and this product are connected appropriately at the time of initial installation", and to "Check for the wiring and
connection in case of trouble".
Input test
This is to check for ON/OFF of the input signal (external devices to CCS3000). The unit operates as follows in
the connection test mode.
As for the I/O output signals, the unit turns off the "Print OK" signal (no printing is carried out even if there
is a print command input from the photocell sensor, or through communication), and holds the other output
signals in the state when entered the test screen.
As for the I/O input signals, the unit does not perform the operation according to the input signal if any,
but they can be monitored only for the input test. It is only for checking the connection.
Output test
This is to check for ON/OFF of the output signal (CCS3000 to external devices). The unit operates as follows
in the connection test mode.
As for the I/O output signals, the unit turns off the "Print OK" signal (no printing is carried out even if there
is a print command input from the photocell sensor, or through communication), and holds the other output
signals in the state when it entered the test screen. The output signal changes later when ON/OFF of
each signal is specified from the screen. The output signal returns to the normal operation when it exits
the test screen.
As for the I/O input signals, the unit does not perform the operation according to the input signal, if any,
after it entered the test screen.
