Overseas Filipino Workers: Global servants or Modern day heroes?

Most of families and relatives in our country enjoying branded clothes and imported
products and foods are from an OFW which means Overseas Filipino Workers, Those Filipinos
are the one who goes to a different country just to have a stable job and to have a minimum
salary. As a student I wondered why Overseas Filipino Worker labels as global servant or
modern day heroes. Based on my researched, the estimated total of an overseas Filipino
worker is 2.2 million because many Filipinos think that migration is the key or demographic
response to solve a various socio-economic problems also many Filipinos unable to find a job
here in the Philippines because of poor educational background, lack of working experience and
being underpaid. As the result of having a million OFWs, the Philippines has become a major
source for international migrants and become one of the largest sending countries of labor to
various countries in the world that’s why some people labelled OFWs as “Global Servant.”
In economically aspect, Overseas Filipino worker are labelled as “Modern day heroes”
due to fact that OFW remittances are closing the gap between the poor and the wealthy by
contributing to a growing middle class also Globalization has created a new reality for OFWs
also it has been a good part of it due to the fact, since then OFWs become an economic lifeline
of the Philippines, with their remittances contributing nine percent of the country's Gross
Domestic Product (GDP).
In my point of view I still considered Overseas Filipino Workers as Modern Day hero,
why? Being a hero is not always come along with the sword, blood or to sacrifice one’s life, it
also comes with our mind and heart. As Dr. Jose Rizal does, he fought for our country through
writing novels that will trigger the patriotism of every people back then. Just like Dr. Jose Rizal,
OFWs uses their heart and mind making decision and sacrifices themselves to choose to leave
our country to provide financial and everyday needs of their love ones. Overseas Filipino
workers chose to leave even though it will make them sad, lonely and homesick, it is hard for
them to interact with other culture. They endure being discriminated by other nation and also,
Most of OFWs endures the pain of being abused by their boss or manager just to provide
money consistently to their family or love ones in the Philippines and sometimes Overseas
Filipino worker return here in the Philippines with their dead bodies, those OFWs are victims of
abuse, terrorism, unfair treatment, molested and harassment. Also most Filipino women
making self-defense to protect their lives are being executed in other country.
Still many Filipinos think that people working abroad are rich but in reality Overseas
Filipino workers just doing their best, they did not think the hard works and sacrifices of our
fellow Filipinos. As a student, I am proud that they serve as inspirations not just to me, but for
all Filipinos. Overseas Filipino workers serves as role model for being brave for facing everyday
challenges alone far away from their family and also for doing their best to provide a good life
and stable financial needs to their loved ones and relatives. Also by not forgetting to spoil their
families with monthly balik-bayan box. They are Indeed a “Modern-day Heroes”.
