ALTERNATIVE LEARNING SYSTEM

I. OBJECTIVES
 Differentiate vertebrates and invertebrate animals.
 Identify the classification of vertebrate animals.
 Enumerate the characteristics of each classification of vertebrate.

II.CONTENT (SUBJECT MATTER)

Types of Vertebrates

A. Springboard
 Ask the learners what pets do they have at home? Name those animals.

B. Activity
Let us start the fun by arranging the jumbled letters into words.

o ETBERVRSAET
o vertebrates

o ETBEIRVRSAETN
o invertebrates

o MMLMAAS
o mammals

o SFIS
o fish

o EPRILSTE
o Reptiles

C. Analysis
 What are vertebrates? invertebrates? mammals? fish? and reptiles? In this video these
questions will be answered. I will be showing you the classifications of animals based on
structure. So, prepare your ears and eyes for learning.
D. Abstraction
The animal kingdom is divided into two groups: vertebrates and invertebrates.
Invertebrates are animals without backbone. In fact, 95% of all living creatures on Earth are invertebrates.
Many of it has skeletons outside their body called exoskeleton. An exoskeleton is a hard outer layer that
protects an animal’s soft insides. Insects, spiders and crustaceans have it. We will have more of
invertebrates in another video lesson.

Our focus for today is the vertebrates group.

Wherein, vertebrates are animals that have a backbone like the cow, the toad, the turtle and the pigeon.
These animals have backbone that is made of bones joined together to form a skeleton.
Scientist classified it into 5 classes.
Mammals- have a body covered or not in hair or fur. It also has mammary glands that produce milk for
the young. Mammals are also warm-blooded animals. Examples are ape, kangaroo, human, dog and cats.
Fish- it lives in water and breathes using its gills. They have steamed a lined body that enables them to
swim fast. They are cold blooded animals and mostly lay eggs to reproduce. Examples are: clown fish,
milk fish, mudfish
Reptiles- have tough, dry and scaly skin that protects them from intense temperatures. They breathe
using their lungs and lays eggs mostly on land. Examples are: turtle, snake komodo dragon
Amphibians-are animals that live both on land and water. They lay their eggs in the water and when they
are big enough they develop lungs and live on land. They have moist and smooth skin. They are cold
blooded animals which help them survive in both land and water. Examples are: toad, frogs, newt,
salamanders
Birds- these vertebrates are equipped with wings and feathers that enable them to fly. They are warm
blooded animals and breathe with lungs. Examples are: parrot, crow, pigeon and eagle.

E. Application
 Encircle the animals that belong to the same group.
A. Valuing
 Ask the learners the following questions:
Do you have pets at home? Give three ways on how to take care of it.
