Laboratory Manual

Prof. Mohammad A. Qasaimeh
FALL - 2022
1. General objectives of the laboratory experiments
 To learn the theory, the properties and working of the sensors, transducers, their
instrumentation, signal conditioning and the actuation of the systems. It will involve the
design of electrical circuits as part of the instrumentation and conditioning through
experiments, analysis and discussion of their results.
 To learn various techniques of reading the sensor values their conversion to digital values
so that it can result in meaningful data for processing by the processors and the actuation.
 Solving circuit networks using PSPICE software as well as building them on bread board
and confirming the theory learnt during the lectures by measuring electrical parameters,
such as voltage, current, Resistance as part of the instrumentation technique.
 To learn how to design circuits performing certain desired functions, such as amplifiers
and filters, as well as achieving different ways of actuation.

2. Laboratory preparation

 EACH student is expected to understand the goals and the procedure of each experiment
to be performed remotely or in-person. Steps include the circuit making, circuits building,
simulating results remotely or watching them in-person and thus analyzing.
 Students MUST read theory and follow instructions given before performing experiments.
 EACH student MUST have finished all the preparation questions, drawn any required
diagrams of connections and done any calculations before coming to the lab.

3. Laboratory reports

The format specified below must be respected.

 One report per experiment per individual.
 Lab reports must be type written and submit the word as well as PDF of the written report.
 The lab reports are due on the next session of the lab or as agreed with the Lab Instructor.
In addition to the documentation of measurement, one must allow the other people to make use of
the results later, by adding an adequate amount of information to make the report comprehensive.

4. How to write a laboratory report

Following is a list of what a lab report should contain:

 Title of the Experiment

 Names (complete) and NETID.
 Circuit diagrams and Simulations (where possible, tabulate computed values from theory
beside the measured values)
 Graphs (identify them with a title, legends and axes captions)
 Discussion of results (include general observations from your tables and graphs,
comparison with theoretical values, explanation of physical behaviors and of any
abnormalities)
 Conclusion.
5. FILE NAMING LAB REPORT:

 Please upload both the versions in the classes WORD as well as PDF documents.
 The naming of the file shall be the Lab number followed by the first name + the first
letter of the Last name.
 My First name: Faraz
 My Last Name: Afzal
 Lab report is: Lab1
 So my lab report file name would be:
 Lab1_FarazA.pdf
 Lab1_FarazA.docx
 It is important to follow the Lab Report naming convention as I will have to grade them
electronically, and I have to follow a systematic naming.
 So if James Bradford is submitting a Lab, file name shall be:
 Lab1_JamesB.docx
Lab 11 (Project & Presentation)

Learn to design and build different circuits with different user requirements.

1. Objectives:
- Learn the LTSpice environment.
- To learn making schematic (Circuits) in LTspice
- Learn to define the different component parameters.
- Learn to define simulation parameters
- Learn to run simulation and analyze the circuits

2. Preparation:

- Watch the tutorial on how to setup schematics and run simulations.

- Must have understood the related theory to know the thorough meanings of the actions
performed in making circuits.

VERY IMPORTANT

3. DC Operating Point Analysis and Transient Response:

For all the circuits below following should be presented in your lab report:
a. High Resolution Screenshots of the schematics of your circuit with all the Nodes
properly labelled. (10 marks each)
b. Screenshot of the parameters of the source. (2 marks each)
c. Always make a table showing all the voltages and currents through the elements as
well as power dissipated. (10 marks each)
d. High Resolution Screenshots of the plots that you observe. (5 Marks each), also
explain the trend analysis of the plots (When there are plots)
Task 1/ Circuit 1:
We are given a task to make an emergency warning light for a roadwork.
The company wants the warning light to be designed based on an LDR (Light Dependent
Resistance).

-- The "Lamp" on warning light will be represented by a 3V, 40mA LED.

Build the schematic and present in the lab report. The schematic should have actual values of the
electrical components as we are going to implement it in our lab.
Your circuit should have voltage divider bias having a transistor. Find out all the resistor values
needed to successfully work the light.
We will block the incident light on LDR to simulate the evening time and the LED Lamp should
start lighting.

Task 2/Circuit 2:
Design a complete tachometer based on a sensor of your choice.
Give reasons for the preference of the sensor choice that you have made.
Our target is to find the rpms of a rotating axle of a car.
Design the circuit including the sensor and its circuitry, any additional signal conditioning
circuitry, components and resistor values. The output of this circuit serves as an input to the
Arduino.
Present the whole schematic of the system.
You will also write the arduino code working on the input of the circuitry you have designed to
calculate the rpms.
