CHAPTER 3: ONE DIMENSIONAL MOTION

1. Define velocity and acceleration.

2. A cart with an initial velocity of 5.0 m/s experiences a constant acceleration of 2.0 m/s2. What is
the cart's displacement during the first 6.0 s of its motion?

3. An object starts from rest and undergoes uniform acceleration. During the first second it travels
5.0 m. How far will it move during the next second?

4. An antelope moving with constant acceleration covers the distance between two points 70 m
apart in 7 s. Its speed as it passes the second point is 15 m/s.
i. What is its speed at the first point?
ii. What is the acceleration?
iii. Draw a graph velocity against time for the antelope

5. An object is thrown upward with a speed of 36 m/s. How long does it take to return to its starting
point?

6. A stone is thrown downward with initial speed 8 m/s from a height of 25 m. Find
iv. the time taken to reach the ground and
v. the speed with which it strike.

7. A roller coaster car moves 70.0 m horizontally and then rises 45.0 m at an angle of 30.0° above
the horizontal. What is its displacement from its starting point?

8. A speedboat moving at 40.0 m/s approaches a buoy marker ahead. The speedboat pilot slows
the boat with a constant deceleration of 3.00 m/s2 by reducing the throttle. How long does it take
the boat to reach the buoy? (Assume the speedboat stop at the buoy)

9. A girl runs back and forth on a track three times covering a total distance of 500 m. Find the total
displacement and distance moved.

10. Ahmad drives 60 km from his house to the petrol station in a car moving at a constant speed of
60 km/h. Then he moves the same distance to a shop at a constant speed of 120 km/h. The
average speed for the entire trip from his house to the shop is _______.

11. How long will a ball take to fall if it starts from rest and moves down for 44.0 m?

12. A stone is thrown at an initial speed of 8.0 m/s at an angle of 35° above the horizontal. What is
the speed of the ball when it returns to the same horizontal level?

building. What is the height of the building?

28. Define velocity and speed.

29. Siti is driving through town at 25.0 m/s. After 5 seconds, she begins to decelerate at a constant
rate of 1 m/s2. Eventually Siti comes to a complete stop.
iii. Sketch and label a velocity-time graph of Siti's motion.
iv. Calculate the time taken for Siti to stop her car.
v. Determine the distance travelled by the car from the graph.

36. A book is thrown downward with an initial speed of 15 m/s from a 30 m height balcony. Find
iii. the speed of the book at the height of 15 m.
iv. the time taken to reach the ground and
v. the speed with which it strikes the ground.

37. A passenger in the taxi saw a car in front of it moved with the velocity of 20 m/s while the taxi
moved with the velocity of 10 m/s in the same direction. Find the actual velocity of the car?

rate, how long does it take to accelerate from 80 km/h to 110 km/h?

Determine the height of the cliff. (Ans: 240m)
55. A kangaroo running at a constant acceleration covers the distance between two points 70.0 m

iv. Find the speed at the first point.

i. The acceleration between t=0 and t= 8s.
ii. The total distance traveled by the body.
iii. The deceleration of the body during the final stage of the motion.
