Originator of the Montessori method of education for pre school children, Maria
Montessori,
was the first woman to receive a medical degree in Italy. After receiving her degree in 1894,
she w o r k e d w it h s u b n o r m a l c h i l d r e n a s a p s y c h i a t r i s t a t t h e University of
Rome. It was there that she pioneered in the instruction of retarded children, especially
through the use of an environment rich in manipulative materials. The success of
