Nature of Project:

My Project includes the concepts and configuration of Local Area Networks (LANs), Layer 2 and 3 Switching,
VLAN, and Router Technologies. In my project I used the “Cisco packet tracer” software, windows server
2003. I also used the hardware during practice i.e router, switch, server. I also used crimping tools, RJ45
connectors and cable wires to make straight and cross cable wires.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

In my project I made a Layer2networkfor small organization using Layer 2 and Layer 3 switches which is
used to connect different broadcast domains. In this, Layer 3 switches work as a Routers and also used for
routing.I made this network to provide connectivity and to store the important data. I also apply access
control list in my project to deny some features or services to local area network. I also made VLAN to
divide layer 2 switches into multiple broadcast domains.

The project includes:

 Introduction to networking

 IP addressing

 Subnetting

 Dynamic Routing
EIGRP

 VLAN
 VTP
 InterVLAN Routing
 Trunking
 Etherchannel
 Spanning Tree Protocol

TECHNOLOGY

2.1 COMPUTER NETWORK

A computer network allows sharing of resources and information among interconnected devices. In the
1960s, the Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) started funding the design of the Advanced
Research Projects Agency Network (ARPANET) for the United States Department of Defense. It was the
first computer network in the world. Development of the network began in 1969, based on designs
developed during the 1960s.
Computer networks can be used for a variety of purposes:
 Facilitating communications. Using a network, people can communicate efficiently and
easily via email, instant messaging, chat rooms, telephone, video telephone calls,
and video conferencing.

 Sharing hardware. In a networked environment, each computer on a network may

access and use hardware resources on the network, such as printing a document on a
shared network printer.

 Sharing files, data, and information. In a network environment, authorized user may
access data and information stored on other computers on the network. The capability
of providing access to data and information on shared storage devices is an important
feature of many networks.

 Sharing software. Users connected to a network may run application programs on

remote computers.

 Information preservation.

 Security.

 Speed up.
2.2 NETWORKING

Networking is a common synonym for developing and maintaining contacts and

personal connections with a variety of people who might be helpful to you and your
career.

Networking is the practice of linking two or more computing devices together for
the purpose of sharing data. Networks are built with a mix of computer hardware
and computer software. It is an especially important aspect of career management
in the financial services industry.

Protocols are rules that govern how devices communicate and share
information across a network. Examples of protocols include:
• IP – Internet Protocol
• HTTP - Hyper Text Transfer Protocol
• SMTP – Simple Mail Transfer Protocol

Multiple protocols often work together to facilitate end-to-end network

communication, forming protocol suites or stacks. Protocols are covered in great
detail in other guides.

Basic Network Types

Network types are often defined by function or size. The two most common
categories of networks are:

 LANs
 WANs

Local Area Network

A Local Area Network (LAN) is a network that connects computers and devices in
a limited geographical area such as home, school, computer laboratory, office
building, or closely positioned group of buildings. Each computer or device on the
network is a node. Current wired LANs are most likely to be based on Ethernet
technology, although new standards like ITU-T G.hn also provide a way to create a
wired LAN using existing home wires (coaxial cables, phone lines and power
lines).
Wide Area Network

A wide area network (WAN) is a computer network that covers a large geographic
area such as a city, country, or spans even intercontinental distances, using a
communications channel that combines many types of media such as telephone
lines, cables, and air waves. A WAN often uses transmission facilities provided by
common carriers, such as telephone companies. WAN technologies generally
function at the lower three layers of the OSI reference model: the physical layer,
the data link layer, and the network layer.

Virtual Private Network

A virtual private network (VPN) is a computer network in which some of the links
between nodes are carried by open connections or virtual circuits in some larger
network (e.g., the Internet) instead of by physical wires. The data link layer
protocols of the virtual network are said to be tunneled through the larger network
when this is the case. One common application is secure communications through
the public Internet, but a VPN need not have explicit security features, such as
authentication or content encryption. VPNs, for example, can be used to separate
the traffic of different user communities over an underlying network with strong
security features.

2.3 CERTIFICATION

2.3.1 CCNA:-

The CCNA certification has been devised by CISCO and stands for Cisco Certified Network
Associate. The certificate validates a professional’s ability to understand, configure, operate,
configure and troubleshoot medium-level switched and routed networks and also includes the
verification and implementation of connections via remote sites using WAN.

There are now several different types of Cisco-Certified Network Associate, with "CCNA
Routing and Switching" being closest to the original CCNA focus; other types of CCNA focus
on security, collaboration, data centers, service providers, video, voice, and wireless.

CCNA (ROUTING AND SWITCHING):-

To achieve CCNA Routing and Switching certification, one must earn a passing
score on Cisco exam #200-120, or combined passing scores on both the
"Interconnecting Cisco Network Devices" ICND1 #100-101 and ICND2 #200-101
exams. Cisco does not publish exam passing scores because exam questions and
passing scores are subject to change without notice
The Advantages of being CCNA Certified

CCNA is easily one of the most valued and vouched IT certifications across the globe. Till date,
more than a million candidates have taken and passed the CCNA certification and each one is
well placed in his/her area of specialization. CCNA certification benefits both the employer and
the employee. It is proven that the certification can bring about an enormous change in career
path while acquiring valuable skills all through the way.

SOFTWARE USED IN NETWORKING

Cisco Packet Tracer
Packet Tracer is a cross-platform visual simulation program designed by Cisco Systems that
allows users to create network topologies and imitate modern computer networks. The software
allows users to simulate the configuration of Cisco routers and switches using a simulated
command line interface. Packet Tracer makes use of a drag and drop user interface, allowing
users to add and remove simulated network devices as they see fit. The software is mainly
focused towards Certified Cisco Network Associate Academy students as an educational tool for
helping them learn fundamental CCNA concepts. Packet Tracer also allows instructors to create
activities that students have to complete. Packet Tracer is often used in educational settings as a
learning aid. Cisco Systems claims that Packet Tracer is useful for network experimentation.
Packet Tracer supplements physical equipment in the classroom by allowing students to create a
network with an almost unlimited number of devices, encouraging practice, discovery, and
troubleshooting. The simulation-based learning environment helps students develop 21st century
skills such as decision making, creative and critical thinking, and problem solving.
Packet Tracer complements the Networking Academy curricula, allowing instructors to easily
teach and demonstrate complex technical concepts and networking systems design. Instructors
can customize individual or multiuser activities, providing hands-on lessons for students that
offer value and relevance in their classrooms. Students can build, configure, and troubleshoot
networks using virtual equipment and simulated connections, alone or in collaboration with other
students. Packet Tracer offers an effective, interactive environment for learning networking
concepts and protocols. Most importantly, Packet Tracer helps students and instructors create
their own virtual “network worlds” for exploration, experimentation, and explanation of
networking concepts and technologies.
SCOPE OF THE PROJECT

The Scope of the Project is to provide organization with a better network with good security
facilities. By using the Simulator, a dummy model of the network is made which can be
established in real world as it is. The latest techniques of the networking are used in this
project. So that the organization do not face any problem in future. Access Control Lists are
used in this project which can prevent from the hackers.
