The current era is marked by the technology revolution. Its pervasiveness and explosive transformation
make it vital but challenging, not only for the new generation but all. Such a transformative technology
germinates in the mind of an engineer, who transforms his idea into a beneficial application through his
strong foundations of engineering principles, computational tools, and a systematic process.

M.Tech. Design Engineering is a four semester Work Integrated Learning Programme designed for
working professionals, and aims at building design engineering skill to support the explosive
technology growth.

M.Tech. Design Engineering is a BITS Pilani Work Integrated Learning Programme (WILP). BITS Pilani
Work Integrated Learning Programmes are UGC approved.

Who Should Apply?


 Highly driven and ambitious professionals aspiring to build a career in Engineering Research
& Development, and acquire both in technical and managerial competencies.
 Professionals engaged in Design function who want to evolve to a Project Manager role, and
build computational competencies that can be applied in new product development and
product improvement initiatives.

What are the Highlights
of the Programme?
M.Tech. Design Engineering for working professionals is approved
by UGC, and can be pursued along with your job.

The programme is of four semesters, with online classes conducted mostly on


weekends or after business hours. You can pursue the programme without any
career break.

The programme offers a set of courses that have a strong application orientation through
contemporary computation tools such as PTC Creo, ANSYS,MATLAB, Automation Direct,
DFMA (Boothroyd) etc. to help build core competency of a technologist. Further students
can perform experiments through Remote laboratory for select set of courses.

The Dissertation (Project Work) in the final semester enables students to apply concepts
and techniques learnt during the programme.

The programme uses a Continuous Evaluation System that assesses the learners over
convenient and regular intervals. Such a system provides timely and frequent feedback
and helps busy working professionals stay on course with the programme.

The programme focuses on experiential learning components such as lab exercises,


assignments, case studies and work integrated activities.

Participants who successfully complete the programme will become members of an elite
& global community of BITS Pilani Alumni.

objectives?
Studies have shown that senior positions in technology industry require holistic

of engineering industries.

Learning methodology
Attend online lectures over weekends

Lectures are conducted live via online classes. These lectures can be attended via the internet using a
computer from any location. These online classrooms offer similar levels of interactivity as regular
classrooms at the BITS Pilani campus.

Classes for students admitted during the period Oct 2021 - Jan 2022 will begin in
Jan 2022. The class schedule is announced within 1 week of completion of the
admission process.

The online lectures are conducted usually over weekends for a total of 7-8 hours per week. If
you miss a lecture, you can also access the recorded lecture on the internet.

Digital learning
Learners can access engaging learning material at their own pace which includes recorded lectures from
BITS Pilani faculty members, course handouts and recorded lab content where applicable.

Experiential learning

The programme emphasises on Experiential Learning that allows learners to apply concepts learnt in
classroom in simulated, and real work situations. This is achieved through:
 Simulation based exercises
 Remote Labs: Physical equipment that can be accessed from any remote locations to conduct controlled
experiments
 Virtual Labs: A virtual environment to conduct extreme experiments using industry-scale software tools
with an objective of solving real-world problems

Continuous assessment

Continuous Assessment includes graded Assignments/Quizzes, Mid-semester exam, and Comprehensive

VIRTUAL LAB
The Virtual Lab is a cloud based simulation space, where participants can design,
develop and test solutions for industry scale problems. The lab hosts a range of
popular software tools that can simulate the complete spectrum of engineering processes
to the accuracy and precision of real-life. The lab is open 24x7, 365 days with a live support.

LAB ARCHITECTURE
 The lab is organised around six engineering domains such as, thermal, design, materials,
manufacturing, circuits and operations.

 The structured lab exercises are packaged as simulation-capsules that guide the students
through a sequence of practice problems of increasing complexity eventually to build the
competency to solve an industry scale problem.

 Participants required to perform experiments as a part of their course work can select their suitable
time, schedule the session and perform the experiments by accessing the lab from any geographical
location if they only have a basic internet connection.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:
 On completion of the experiment, participants can download the results, analyse and submit the report
in the learning management system for evaluation.

 Apply the gained knowledge in solving creative industry scale problems.

FLUID DYNAMICS
VIRTUAL LAB
Flow Simulation tools aid significant reduction in time & cost incurred during the design
phase of a product. The real-time fluid behaviour and interactions can be simulated with near
accuracy. Virtual lab using the simulation tool, Flowvision provides a platform to apply various
numerical techniques and study the flow field characteristics.

LIST OF EXPERIMENTS:
 Simulation of laminar, turbulent and varying mass flow.
 Simulation of Conduction and Conjugate heat transfer.
 Simulation of fluid between the Rotor blades.
 Simulating flow pattern using Volume of Fluid method.
 Simulating mixing phenomenon of non-reacting fluids.

 Apply the techniques of numerical analysis to solve industrial problems.

ANSYS
VIRTUAL LAB
Finite Element technique allows to analyse more complex design geometry with higher accuracy to
understand the physical behaviours of a complex object. ANSYS Virtual Lab deals with various numerical
analysis and predicts the structural and thermal behaviour of components to check and validate its design
more accurately and economically.

 Evaluating static and dynamic performance of various design under structural
and thermal loading.
 Estimating the safety margin, and to identify the nweakness of the design
accurately.
 Determining the influence of selection of various materials on design of components.

VIRTUAL
LAB USING MATLAB
MATLAB (matrix laboratory) is a multi-paradigm numerical computing environment and proprietary
programming language. Matlab is used for computer programming, mathematical modelling such as
geometry, dynamics & robotics, and MIL simulations.

 Computer programming experiments.
 Design the points, curves and surfaces and validate mathematically using curve fitting toolbox.
 Mathematical model based simulations for dynamics, vibrations, robotics and mechanisms.
 Model in the loop & hardware in the loop testing using Simulink.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:
 Model any process mathematically, develop control strategies for typical
engineering applications and perform model in the loop testing.
 Develop programming knowledge and create functional blocks which will replicate
the real system.

FRACTURE MECHANICS
VIRTUAL LAB
Fracture mechanics predicts failure of structures/components by means of uncertainties in loading or
environment, defects in the materials, inadequacies in design in the extension of component life. Virtual Lab
allow users to simulate 3D crack growth in engineering structures where the component geometry, local
loading conditions, and the crack geometry can be arbitrarily complex.

LIST OF EXPERIMENTS:
 Crack propagation simulation by considering surface crack, single edge crack, and double edge crack.
 Prediction of crack propagation life on plates, pipes, welded joints and Revit holes.
 Single and multiple crack propagation analysis.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:
 Predicts Stress Intensity Factors associated with all three modes of fracture for different components
and loading.
 Perform crack propagation analysis on various components and structures to determine critical crack
length and to predict the remaining life.

MATERIAL TESTING AND


TECHNOLOGY VIRTUAL LAB
Main objective of this lab is to simulate the molecular behaviour of soft materials such as plastics, rubber,
elastomer, paint, adhesive, fuel cell and so on. And also to test various mechanical properties of soft
materials through simulation.

 Polymerization of LPDE, HPDE, LLDPE, PVC and PC.
 Dissipative particle dynamics of PSB and EPDM.
 Mechanical properties evaluation of polymers.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:
 Material property evaluation such as permeability, interfacial tension, rheological calculations, solubility,
polymer-solid interface peeling, thermal conductivity, coating, deformation, and so on.
 Design, model and optimise the polymer structure to achieve the desired mechanical / electrical /
chemical properties.

DFMA VIRTUAL
LAB
DFMA Product Simplification software by Boothroyd and Dewhurst utilizes an intuitive question-and-answer
interface that identifies opportunities for substantial cost reduction in a product. By applying industry-tested
minimum part count criteria, the software finds parts that can be consolidated/eliminated while maintaining
100% functionality.

 The outcome of a DFMA-based design is a more elegant product that is both
functionally efficient and easy to assemble.
 DFMA re-designs also have the added impact of increased quality and reliability,
faster development time, and require fewer suppliers.

AUTOMATION STUDIO
VIRTUAL LAB
Automation Studio offers intuitive design, animation, simulation and system analysis functionalities in a
versatile and user-friendly environment in Mechatronics and Automation domain. It allows students to build
and select their mechatronics circuits including hydraulic, pneumatics, electronic, electrical, PLC and
combination of these elements.

LIST OF EXPERIMENTS:
 PLC programming for specific automation processes.
 Hydraulics and pneumatics circuit simulation using different control valves.
 Mechanism simulation including mechatronics circuits
 Selecting suitable actuators for the specific automation application.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:
 Understand the behaviour of the circuit elements.
 Design and optimize hydraulic circuits and pneumatic circuits.
 Understand behaviour of each mechatronics elements like valve, cylinders, actuators etc.

COMSOL MULTI-PHYSICS
LAB
COMSOL Multi-physics is a cross-platform finite element analysis, solver and multi-physics simulation
software. It allows conventional physics-based user interfaces and coupled systems of partial differential
equation. It deals with various numerical analysis and predicts the electrical, electromagnetic and various
other behaviour of components to check and validate its design more accurately and economically.

REMOTE LAB
Through the Remote lab, participants can perform controlled experiments from
anywhere in the world. The IoT enabled lab equipments and the integrated remote
access network makes this possible. The lab is open 24x7, 365 days. Remote Lab is
one more attempt by the work integrated learning programs division of BITS Pilani to bring
the campus learning experience to the working professionals complementing their
work-life-learning balance.

LAB ARCHITECTURE:
 Participants required to perform experiments as a part of their course work, they can select their suitable
time, schedule the session and perform the experiments by accessing equipment remotely.
 A detailed step by step instruction enables students to perform the experiments.
 Participants can control the machines using equipment console while watching them through multiple
cameras installed around.
 Participants can pan, tilt or zoom to have a better view of the machines.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:
 On completion of the experiment, participants can download the results, analyse and submit the report
in the learning management system for evaluation.
 Interact with equipment, get the real time experience and apply the gained knowledge in solving industry
scale problems.

CONTROL BOARD
Quanser Controls Board is connected with NI Elvis III, it is offering complete package for studying fundamental
and advanced controls topics. Access and customize all levels of the interfacing and control software using
LabVIEW and MATLAB.

SYSTEMS BOARD
This board is designed to provide hands on experience with a complete mechatronic system in a safe, and
academically appropriate setting. The board gives students an opportunity to delve into the operation of a
mechatronic system at every level, from motor interfacing all the way to an engaging application context using
industry-grade instrumentation and real-time control.

 Approaches to sensing, linear and rotational position.
 Long and short distance, touch, encoder decoding.
 Switch de-bouncing.
 Introduction to filtering and Combining Sensors.

 Describe form and function of PWM signals to drive DC motors.
 Explain relation between joint space and task-space manipulator.
 Apply kinematic equations to convert between joint and task-space.
 Select thresholds for isolating specific image information.
 Apply Image processing, manipulator control & state machine logic.

EXPERIMENTS WITH
ACTUATORS BOARD
This board is designed exclusively for the NI ELVIS III platform and LabVIEW, the Quanser Mechatronic
Actuators board exposes students to industry-grade measurement and command fundamentals for the four
most common actuator types: brushed DC motors, brushless DC motors, stepper motors, and servo motors.

Online exams option
Examinations Mode Options applicable for students admitted in
Batch starting in Jan 2022.
Semester 1, 2 and 3 have Mid-semester Examinations and Comprehensive Examinations for
each of the course. These examinations are mostly scheduled over weekends. During these
semesters, In addition to the mid-semester and comprehensive examinations, there will also be
quizzes/assignments conducted online as per course plan which the students need to participate. In the
Semester 4 (Final Semester), Student will be doing a dissertation (project work) as per Institution’s
guidelines.

Two Options on Mode of Examinations during Semester 1, 2 & 3:


Institution offers a choice between taking the examination online or taking them at a designated
examination centre. The student will choose one of the option depending on his or her own preference and
circumstances. Both options are explained below:

Online Examinations:
Students choosing this option can take the examinations online from any location e.g. office or home.
To take an online examination, student must possess a laptop or desktop with a web cam, a smart
phone and good internet connectivity. As per the examination schedule, the student is expected to
login to the institution’s online examination platform and take the examinations in compliance with
institution’s defined guidelines and rules announced before the examinations. For full details about

Examinations at Designated Examination Centers:


Students choosing this option will need to appear in person for taking the examinations at
institution’s designated examination centers. These designated examination centers are at the
following locations: Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, Pune, Mumbai, Goa, Delhi NCR, Pilani
and Kolkata. In addition to these location, Institution also has a designated examination center
at Dubai.
Please note that offering of examinations at designated examination centers is subject to institution’s
assessment of the safety conditions as per prevailing pandemic conditions and also subject to a
required minimum number of students preferring this option. The institution may choose to not offer
this option, if as per its own assessment the safety situation due to pandemic conditions is not
conducive to conduct examinations at designated examination centers or if as per its assessment,
adequate no of students have not preferred for this option. In circumstances as explained, Institute
will then conduct the examinations only in the online mode.

Important:
The option of taking Online Exams for Semester 1, 2 & 3 will remain available for normal
duration of the programme. However, in case a student chooses to take a break in the programme,
the options on the mode of examination available will be as prevailing at the time the student resumes
the programme. Also, if a student has backlog course/s to successfully complete and due to which
he/she needs to register in additional semester/s over and above the normal duration of the
programmes, the options on the mode of examination available will be as prevailing at the time when
student registers for an additional semester.

Mode of Evaluation for Semester 4 (Final Semester):


During Semester 4, students will be required to register for a full semester Dissertation (Project work).
Each submission required for Dissertation as per institution’s guidelines can be made ONLINE on a BITS
Pilani’s approved and managed online assessment platform.

What is the Eligibility Criteria?
Minimum eligibility to apply: Employed professionals working in engineering design
and allied fields, holding BE/ B.Tech./ M.Sc. or equivalent in relevant disciplines, with
at least 60% aggregate marks or more in their qualifying exam, and minimum one year
relevant work experience.

How to apply
Click here to visit the BITS Pilani Online Application Center. Create your login at the
Application Center by entering your unique Email id and create a password of your choice.

Once your login has been created, you can anytime access the online Application Center using your
email ID and password. Once you have logged in, you will see a screen showing 4 essential steps to be
completed to apply for the programme of your choice.

Begin by clicking on Step 1 - ‘Fill/ Edit and Submit Application Form’. This will enable you to select the
programme of your choice. After you have chosen your programme, you will be asked to fill your details in an
online form. You must fill all details and press ‘Submit’ button given at the bottom of the form.

Take the next step by clicking on Step 2 - 'Download Application PDF Copy’. This will download a pdf copy of
the application form on your computer

Now, click on Step 3 - 'Pay Application Fee’ to pay INR 1,500/- using Net banking/ Debit Card/ Credit Card.

Take a printout of the downloaded Application Form and note down the Application Form Number that appear
on the top-right corner of the first page. This Application Form Number should be referred in all future
correspondence with BITS Pilani.

In the printout of the downloaded Application Form, you will notice on page no. 3 a section called the Employer
Consent Form. Complete the Employer Consent Form. This form needs to be signed and stamped by your
organisation’s HR or any other authorised signatory of the company.

Important: In view of work-from-home policies mandated by many organisations, a few candidates may not be able
to get the physical forms signed by their HR/ other authorised organisational representative. Such candidates may
instead request an email approval to be sent to their official email ID by the HR using the format available through
this link.
Further on page no. 4 of the printed Application Form is a section called the Mentor Consent Form. The Mentor
Consent Form needs to be signed by the Mentor.

Important: In view of work-from-home policies mandated by many organisations, a few candidates may not be able
to get the physical forms signed by their Mentor. Such candidates may instead request an email approval to be sent
to their official email ID by the Mentor using the format available through this link.

Who is a mentor:
Candidates applying to Work Integrated Learning Programmes must choose a Mentor, who will monitor the
academic progress of the candidate, and act as an advisor & coach for successful completion of the programme.

How to apply
Candidates should ideally choose the immediate supervisor or another senior person from
the same organisation. In case a suitable mentor is not available in the same organisation, a
candidate could approach a senior person in another organisation who has the required
qualifications. Wherever the proposed Mentor is not from the same employing organization as that of the
candidate, a supporting document giving justification for the same should be provided by the candidate’s
employer.

Candidates applying to B.Tech. programmes should choose a Mentor who is an employed professional with B.E./
B.S./ B.Tech./ M.Sc./ A.M.I.E./ Integrated First Degree of BITS or equivalent. Candidates applying to M.Tech., M.Sc.,
MBA, M.Phil programme should choose a Mentor who is an employed professional with:

• B.E./ M.Sc./ M.B.A./ M.C.A./ M.B.B.S. etc. and with a minimum of five years of relevant work experience

OR

• M.E./ M.S./M.Tech./ M.Phil./ M.D./ Higher Degree of BITS or equivalent

 Further on page no. 5 of the downloaded Application Form, is a Checklist of Enclosures/ Attachments.

• Make photocopies of the documents mentioned in this Checklist

• Applicants are required to self-attest all academic mark sheets and certificates

 Finally, click on Step 4 - 'Upload & Submit All Required Documents’. This will allow you to upload one-by-one the
printed Application Form, Mentor Consent Form, Employer Consent Form, and all mandatory supporting
documents and complete the application process. Acceptable file formats for uploading these documents are
.DOC, .DOCX, .PDF, .ZIP and .JPEG.

 Upon receipt of your Application Form and all other enclosures, the Admissions Cell will scrutinise them for
completeness, accuracy and eligibility.

 Admission Cell will intimate selected candidates by email within two weeks of submission of application with all
supporting documents. The selection status can also be checked by logging in to the Online Application Centre.

Work Integrated
Learning Programmes

UGC Approval
BITS Pilani is an Institution of Eminence under UGC (Institution of Eminence Deemed
to be Universities) Regulations, 2017. The Work Integrated Learning Programmes
(WILP) of BITS Pilani constitutes a unique set of educational offerings for working
professionals. WILP are an extension of programmes offered at the BITSPilani
Campuses and are comparable to our regular programmes both in terms of
unit/credit requirements as well as academic rigour. In addition, it capitalises and
further builds on practical experience of students through high degree of integration,
which results not only in upgradation of knowledge, but also in up skilling, and
productivity increase. The programme may lead to award of degree, diploma, and
certificate in science, technology/engineering, management, and humanities and
social sciences.

On the recommendation of the Empowered Expert Committee, UGC in its 548th


Meeting held on 09.09.20 has approved the continued offering of BITS Pilani’s Work
Integrated Learning programmes.
