THEORY:

Clipping circuits are nonlinear wave shaping circuits. A clipping circuit is useful to cut off the
positive or negative portions of an input waveform. Clipping circuits are also known as voltage
limiters or slicers.

Positive clipper: The positive half cycle is clipped by diode and only the drop across diode
will appear across the load. During negative half cycle, the diode does not conduct and the
voltage across RL is given by

Negative clipper: The negative half cycle is clipped by diode and only the drop across diode
will appear across the load. During positive half cycle, the diode does not conduct and the
voltage across RL is given by

VIVA QUESTIONS

1) What does it mean by clipping of a circuit?

An electronic device that is used to evade the output of a circuit to go beyond the preset value
(voltage level) without varying the remaining part of the input waveform is called a Clipper
circuit.

2) Where does clippers used?

• Clippers are commonly used in power supplies.

• Used in TV transmitters and Receivers.
• They are employed for different wave generation such as square, rectangular, or trapezoidal
waves.
• Series clippers are used as noise limiters in FM transmitters.

3) Draw the circuits and output of parallel clippers.

A clipper is said to be a shunt/parallel clipper if the resistor and diode are connected in series
with the input AC (voltage) signal and the output is taken across the diode. Based on the
position of the diode, we can clip either the positive half part or the negative half part of the
input signal.

Discuss the essentiality of clippers in electronics field.
There is a vital role of clippers in electronic field. We use clippers for many operations.
They are frequently used for the separation of synchronizing signals from the composite picture
signals. The excessive noise spikes above a certain level can be limited or clipped in FM
transmitters by using the series clippers. For the generation of new waveforms or shaping the
existing waveform, clippers are used. The typical application of a diode clipper is for the
protection of transistors from transients, as a freewheeling diode connected in parallel across
the inductive load. A frequently used half-wave rectifier in power supply kits is a typical
example of a clipper. It clips either positive or negative half-wave of the input. Clippers can be
used as voltage limiters and amplitude selectors.
These are all the detailed applications of clippers.
