ultimate tensile stress of 700MPa and a ultimate shear stress of
500MPa. Assuming a factor of safety as 6, determine the diameter of
the shaft.

c State and explain Gerber, Goodman, Soderberg criterions of failure of CO2 K1,2 6
components subjected to fluctuating stresses with equation.
Q3 Attempt any TWO
a A welded connection, as shown in fig below, is subjected to an CO5 K1,3 6
eccentric force of 60kN in the plane of the welds. Determine the size
of the welds, if the permissible shear stress for the weld is 100
N/mm2. Assume static conditions.
b Explain the terms: CO2 K1,2 6
a) stress concentration
b) Theoretical stress concentration factor
c) fatigue stress concentration factor
d) Notch sensitivity
c A non-rotating shaft supporting a load of 2.5 kN is shown in Fig CO3 K3 6
below. The shaft is made of brittle material, with an ultimate tensile
strength of 300 N/mm2. The factor of safety is 3. Determine the
dimensions of the shaft.

Q4 Attempt any TWO

a Explain the different types of welded and riveted joint with neat CO5 K1,2 6
sketch.
b Find the efficiency of the Single riveted lap joint of 6 mm plates with CO5 K1,3 6
20 mm diameter rivets having a pitch of 50 mm. Assume Permissible
tensile stress in plate=120MPa Permissible shearing stress in rivets =
90MPa Permissible crushing stress in rivets = 180MPa

weld and butt weld.
Q5 Attempt any TWO
a Write a short note on Differential and Compound screws. CO6 K1,2 6
b The nominal diameter of a triple threaded square screw is 50 mm, CO6 K2,3 6
while the pitch is 8 mm. It is used with a collar having an outer
diameter of 100 mm and inner diameter as 65 mm. The coefficient of
friction at the thread surface as well as at the collar surface can be
taken as 0.15. The screw is used to raise a load of 15 kN. Using the
uniform wear theory for collar friction, calculate:
(i) torque required to raise the load;
(ii) torque required to lower the load; and
(iii) the force required to raise the load, if applied at a radius of
500mm.
c A triple-threaded power screw, used in a screw jack, has a nominal CO6 K2,3 6
diameter of 50mm and a pitch of 8 mm. The threads are square and
the length of the nut is 48 mm. The screw jack is used to lift a load of
7.5 kN. The coefficient of friction at the threads is 0.12 and the collar
friction is negligible. Calculate:
(i)the principal shear stress in the screw body;
(ii) the transverse shear stresses in the nut; and
(iii) the unit bearing pressure.
