2. apply analytical listening to solve a problem;
3. differentiate critical thinking from critical listening; and,
4. use critical listening to prevent oneself from being persuaded by fake news.

What I Know

A. Determine the type of listening to be used in the following situation: (Appreciative,

Comprehensive, Empathetic or Critical)

1. Suppose your group suggests having a meeting on Saturday morning. Your groupmate
Nicole seems upset. You want to understand how she feels about the proposed
meeting. When she explains her concerns, you should focus your efforts on her.
2. Two committee members make significantly different recommendations for the date and
format of the company's annual picnic. Which type of listening will help you decide which
suggestion to support?
3. What type of listening is most appropriate when you want to acknowledge a member's
effective language skills, use of humor, or skillful presentation of arguments?
4. What type of listening is most appropriate when you want to accurately understand the
meaning of group members' spoken and nonverbal messages?
5. Mary just loves listening to the song on the radio. When the music comes on, she smiles,
sings along with every word, and sometimes breaks into dance. What is Mary's listening
type?

B. Write T if the statement is True and write F if it is False.

6. As an appreciative listener, you are listening to all parts of the message, analyzing it, and
evaluating what you heard.
7. You are listening to comprehend the message that is being sent if you are watching the
news, listening to a lecture, or getting directions from someone.
8. When you listen empathically, you are stepping into the other’s shoes to get a better
understanding of what it is he/she is talking about.
9. When you listen for appreciation, you are listening for enjoyment.
10. When you listen critically, you are doing so to show mutual concern.
What’s In

Let’s admit it, we hear a lot of noise during the day. There is a continuous flow of
conversation going on at work, in school or in the streets. Often, all of the insights thrown at us
are difficult to digest.

In reality, differentiating the information and selecting the right listening style requires skill.
Hearing can't be managed. It takes a rare skill to listen.

Depending on the kind of message we get, there are many listening types we can employ:

Appreciative – listening to appreciate music, poetry or inspirational messages

Comprehensive – listening to learn content and to separate main ideas from subpoints and
details
Empathetic – listening to empathize and to connect with people’s emotions.
Critical – listening to scrutinize a message.

7. Did equate in your analysis the skill of critical listening?

Critical listening incorporates focusing on the technical aspects of the sound. Physical
details of the music such as frequency response, dynamic range, tone, and how the
instruments all blend together are all factors.
Analytical listening is focused more around the interpretation and meaning of the
actual sound. The message of the song and even the way the vocal has been delivered, these
share common traits of analytical listening. Understanding the mood that the song is setting out
to portray is another analytical listening trait. In other words, analytical listening is all about
feeling and meaning.
