Other Examples: A non-coincidental five-minute major penalty is called with 17:00 on the game clock: a
Commercial Break is NOT permitted.
The third Commercial Break of a period is taken at 5:30. A non-coincidental five-minute major is called at
5:15: a Commercial Break is NOT permitted.
The only other permitted exceptions allowing for commercials to be taken outside of the prescribed
windows of 14:00, 10:00, and 6:00 are: player(s) injury, damage and/or repair to the playing surface
(glass, boards, net), or any other abnormal delay which may require excessive time to sort out. Any
Commercial Break taken under these circumstances must follow the standard procedure described above
and the Commercial Break will replace the next commercial window of the current period (if there are any).
If the abnormal delay occurs after the third commercial window and it is anticipated to be a considerable
delay, an additional Commercial Break may be taken.
Example: The glass breaks at 16:25 and the Commercial Coordinator signals a commercial stoppage. This
Commercial Break represents the 14:00 window. The 10:00 and 6:00 windows will be taken under the
standard procedure.

During all games, NHL Social Media is typically represented by one person: the Live Social Contributor
(LSC), formerly known as RTC (Real-Time Correspondent). This person is a League employee assigned to
each regular season game and is directed by NHL Social Media. LSCs are expected to capture content on
a smartphone and distribute it to Home Team Social Media, Visiting Team Social Media, and NHL Social
Media before, during, and after each game.
• LSCs do NOT have the ability to post content directly to League or Club social media accounts.
• LSCs are briefed regularly on behavioral and procedural expectations for working on-site at NHL games and
they are held to those standards. It is the responsibilty of NHL Social Media and the LSC to work closely
and cooperatively with each club’s respective PR and Media Relations Directors.
• NOTE: NHL Social Media (including LSCs) and NHLPA Social Media are subject to same content policy and
guidelines as Rightsholders.
• NOTE: At select games and events, NHL Social Media and NHLPA Social Media personnel may be present.
POST-GAME
• NHL Social Media (including LSCs) and NHLPA Social Media may request access to interview players
and are subject to the same procedures as outlined for rightsholders in the “NHL Broadcast Rightsholder
Access Policy”.
IN-GAME
• Ability to attach a GoPro between team benches to capture bench celebrations, moments, etc.,
• Ability to have access in Zamboni tunnel and other arena-specific areas that allow for quality content
capturing (i.e., standing room only areas).

RADIO REGULATIONS
1. PURPOSE
These rules (the “Radio Regulations”) are intended to govern the distribution of the radio signal and radio
broadcasts of local radio broadcasts and the NHL Radio Network. It is the intent of these rules to clarify
the respective rights of all League and the Member Clubs so as to expand the number of radio broadcasts
of NHL games nationally, to preserve competitive balance within the League and to prevent free riding and
other inequitable or uneconomic conduct.
2. GRANT OF RIGHTS
a) 500-Mile Radio Territory
1) Each Club will be granted an “Extended Radio Territory,” which shall include the Club’s 50-Mile Home
Territory. The outside boundary of the Extended Territory shall be a circle with a 500-mile radius, the center
of which is the main post office of the Club’s franchise city. A Club shall be authorized to distribute its local
radio broadcasts via any radio station or transmission tower located within its Extended Radio Territory.
2) The League shall review all such transmission arrangements: (i) within the last 50 miles of Extended
Radio Territory (i.e., miles 450 to 500) so as to prevent, to the extent practicable, the transmission of the
Club’s radio broadcasts substantially outside the Extended Radio Territory; and (ii) to ensure, to the extent
practicable, that one Club’s broadcasts are not transmitted substantially inside another Club’s 50-Mile
Home Territory.
b) Shared or Overlapping Territories
1) When the 50-Mile Home Territories of two or more Clubs overlap, none of the involved Clubs shall have
any rights of transmission exclusivity via radio stations or towers located within that shared territory.
2) Similarly, when the Extended Radio Territories of two or more Clubs overlap, none of the involved Clubs
shall have any rights of exclusivity within their shared Extended Radio Territory.
3) When the Extended Radio Territory of one Club (“Club A”) extends into the 50-Mile Home Territory of
another Club (“Club B”), the transmission rights granted to Club A within its Extended Radio Territory shall
not apply within the 50-Mile Home Territory of Club B, i.e., Club A shall not be permitted to distribute its
signals via a radio station or transmission tower located in Club B’s 50-Mile Home Territory.
c) Outside Extended Radio Territory
No Club shall be authorized to distribute its local radio broadcasts via any radio station or transmission
tower located outside of its Extended Radio Territory, nor otherwise contract with another Club or its radio
rightsholders for the distribution of another Club’s local radio broadcasts within any part of its Extended
Radio Territory via any technology, means or manner (including but not limited to cable radio, digital radio,
satellite radio, the Internet, etc.).

BROADCAST FACTBOOK
38 POLICIES & PROCEDURES
4. INTERNET/SATELLITE/WIRELESS
The League shall have the right to post live radio game broadcasts of each NHL Club on its website at
NHL.com and each Club (and its flagship) shall have the right to post the radio broadcast of its games on
their respective websites. Also, the League may distribute both the home and away feeds of each Club’s
live radio broadcast via wireless or satellite radio. As a result, both the home and away radio broadcasts
of NHL games involving and not involving a Club may be transmitted via the Internet, wireless, and/or
satellite radio in the applicable Club’s Extended Radio Territory and 50-Mile Home Territory, including at
the same time that the Club’s games are being terrestrially broadcast by the Club’s flagship.

All microphones will be mounted 9 ½ feet above the ice surface putting them 6 feet above the board. See
attached diagram. To further clarify this illustration, the microphones on the end boards will be mounted
at 6 feet above the boards regardless of the glass height. The microphones on the sideboards also will be
mounted at 6 feet above the boards. In the event the glass height on the sideboards is 6 feet or less, the
microphones should be mounted at the top of the glass.
If, due to shorter side glass, a microphone would be mounted lower than 9 ½ feet above the ice surface,
League Officials will have the discretion to relocate or remove the microphones that would be placed at such
lower level if, in their opinion, placement of a microphone is likely to adversely impact game conditions.
Pertaining to microphones mounted at the blue lines. It is required that these be placed outside the
blue lines toward center ice in the neutral zone. In the event that team benches extend beyond the
neutral zone and into the attack zone, thereby not allowing microphone placement outside the blue line,
that microphone is to be positioned on the side glass at the point nearest the blue line. Additionally,
microphones placed in the corners must be mounted below the goal lines.
The ten locations indicated on the diagram are the approved positions for mounting the microphones. They
are behind each goal, in each corner and at each blue line.
Clear microphone mounts, clips and adhesive must always be used and all cabling is to be professionally
dressed with a clean look along the glass, stanchions, dasher boards and all spectator areas. Any and all
cabling should not impact field of view of the playing surface for spectators or productions.

It should be noted that only one camera and operator will be permitted on the ice. This camera will be
provided by the lead broadcaster and the feed of the camera will be offered, at no additional charge, to all
rightsholders. In the event the lead broadcaster chooses not to put a camera on the ice, it will be the option
of the other rightsholders to do so, as per league protocol. At no time will the audio from this camera’s
microphones be used on-air. The camera’s cable can only come from the penalty box. If there is no penalty
box drop for the camera cable, then no camera will be permitted on the ice.
In the event of video review, the camera/operator is mandated to move as quickly and safely as possible
to the Game camera left penalty box. The operator will be able to continue to shoot from this position,
but must not impede the officials from doing their job. The penalty box door must be closed. Any such
impediment will result in immediate removal from this position.
