1.- SCOPE
This specification covers the characteristics that WMC Wire Rods Cold Heading Quality (CHQ) must
have, to achieve an efficient drawing process in wires for industrial use, for applications of
fastener cold forged , therefore, the supplier must cover adequately structural and mechanical
characteristics to be able to stretch more than 90% of its cross-sectional area that guarantee the
production of high-quality wires.
Any deviation from this specification should be treated as a temporary use permit request as soon
as the wire rod supplier adjusts its process to comply with the requirement of this same
document.
2. MANUFACTURE
The steel shall be made by the open-hearth, electric furnace, or basic-oxygen process.
3.- DIAMETER

Cu <= 0.20
Cr <= 0.20
Ni <= 0.10
Mo <= 0.040

V <= 0.08
Cb + V <= 0.06
6.- SCALE
The wire rod to be used for the mechanical descaling or chemical pickling process must
present a scale formed by Wustite: The composition must have a minimum ratio of 2: 1 of
Wustite (FeO) to Hematite (Fe2O3) + Magnetite (Fe3O4), the weight should not be more than
1.25% of the weight of the roll. It must not present oxidation of the "Rust" type (porous
reddish oxide).
The wire rod oxide scale must be mechanically removable. The surface must not contain
products such as paint, oil, grease, tar or any other contaminant that negatively influences its
mechanical removal. Any surface impurities should not cause problems, slow drawing speed
or otherwise have any negative influence on the finished wire.
The steel wire rod, shall be free from rust, deep pits, scabs, slivers, rolled in scale, lapped,
abrasions, pipe and segregation in such heavy accumulation that would prevent the processing.
However, rod Shall be reasonably free from detrimental surface imperfections including seams,
voids, scratches, , and laps. The limitations for surface discontinuities are in the below table .
Imperfection Maximum Allowable
Depth
Seams & Laps 0.002" (0.05mm)
Voids 0.003" (0.08mm)

The grain size should be "Fine", with an average grain dimension of 5 to 8 according to ASTM E
112.
Note.-The fine grain practice shall have a uniform grain size distribution of 70%, 5 or higher, in
accordance to ASTM method E112.
10.- DECARBURIZATION
Decarburization Limits for Killed Steel With Carbon Content exceeding 0.13%
