Media and Information Literacy

Literacy – The ability to identify, understand,communicate and

compute, using printed and written materials associated with varying context.

Media – The physical objects use to communicate with, or the mass communication through physical
objects such as radio, television, computers, film, etc. It also refers to any physical object used to
communicate messages.

A method in which something is communicated, a vehicle for message.

Media Literacy - The ability to access, analyse, evaluate, create and act using all forms of

communication.

Information – A broad term that covers processed data, knowledge derived from study,

experience, instruction, signals or symbols.

Information Literacy – The ability to recognize when information is needed and to locate, evaluate, and
effectively communicate information in its various formats.

Technology Literacy – The ability of an individual, either working independently or with

others, to responsibly, appropriately and effectively use technological tools.

Media and Information Literacy – The essential skills and competencies that allow individual to engage
with media and other information providers effectively, as well as
develop critical thinking and life-long learning skills to socialize and become active

citizens.

B. Roles and Functions of media in a democratic society

Channel – provides opportunities for people to communicate, share ideas, speculate, tell

stories and give information


Watchdogs – exposes corrupt practices of the government and the private sector.

Resource center – acts as a gateway of information for the society’s consumption.

Advocate – Through its diverse sources or formats, it bridges the gap of digital divide.

C. Internet of Things (IoT) as Theory of Media and Information – Network of physical objects that

are connected to the internet allowing them to send, receive and exchange data.

Send – to create and transmit

Receive – to receive and interpret

Exchange – so that you can talk with things around you

D. Media Convergence, term used to describe the coexistence of traditional and new media.

A. Evolution of Media

 Technology allows people to have better and faster access to information,

which in turn allows them to easily adopt newer media technologies.

 There are four ages that show how media and information has evolved

throughout the history.

1. Pre-industrial age (before 1700s) people discovered fire, developed paper from

plants, and forged weapons and tools with stone, bronze, copper and iron.

2. Industrial Age (1700s- 1930s) People use the power of steam, developed machine

tools, established iron production, and the manufacturing of various products

(including books through the printing press)

3. Electronic Age (1930s- 1980s) The invention of transistor ushered in the electronic

age. People harnessed the power of transistors that led to the transistor radio,

electronic circuits, and the early computers. In this age, long distance

communication became more efficient.

- Television (1941)

4. Information Age (1980s – 2000s) - The internet paved the way for faster

communication and the creation of social network. People advanced the use of

microelectronics with the invention of personal computers, mobile devices, and

wearable technology. Moreover, voice, image, sound and data are digitalized.

- Web browsers

- Blogs

- Social Networks

A. TYPE OF MEDIA

PRINT MEDIA

– Media consisting of paper and ink, reproduced in a printing process that is

traditionally mechanical.

– Example: newspapers, books, magazines, brochures


BROADCAST MEDIA

Media such as radio and television that reach target audiences using airwaves as

the transmission medium

- Example: Television, Radio, satellites, mobiles phones, film/movies

DIGITAL/NEW MEDIA

- Contents are organized and distributed on digital platforms.

- Digital refers to something using digits, particularly binary digits.

- Example: INTERNET (Interconnected Network), Social Media, Computers

B. MEDIA CONVERGENCE

CONVERGE means meeting at a point, it is synonymous to the words: join, unite, intersect,

merge, connect, coincide

MEDIA CONVERGENCE happens when different (two or more) media sources join

together.

MEDIA CONVERGENCE USUALLY OCCURS IN VARIOUS PLATFORMS SUCH AS:

- Social Network

- Learning Management System

- Product Advertisement

- News Agency

- Multimedia Personality
