Tactile
Memory
● This emotional aspect of touch gathers all past experiences—
good or bad—to color the individual's feelings and influence
that individual's decisions
● To touch another is to be touched back, in essence tactility is
bidirectional, intimate and reciprocal
● The physician's and patient's boundaries are united with the
Emotional intent to heal
Aspects of ● The intangible emotions of physicians as they touch patients,
encompassing their past experiences, may thus play a large role
Touch in diagnosis and treatment
The Techniques
“It is a direct technique that usually involves lateral stretching, linear
stretching, deep pressure, traction and/or separation of muscle
origin and insertion while monitoring tissue response and motion
changes by palpation. Also called myofascial treatment.”

Soft Tissue
Technique
Muscle Energy is a form of OMT in
which the patient actively uses their
muscles on request, “from a precisely
controlled position in a specific
direction against a distinctly executed
counterforce.”
Muscle Energy
Myofascial Release is a system of
diagnosis and treatment first
described by AT Still and his early
students, which engages continual
palpatory feedback to achieve
release of myofascial tissues.
Myofascial
Release
This is a variety of techniques
aimed at improving the
Lymphatic movement and drainage of
lymphatic fluid. This includes
Techniques pumping techniques as well as
myofascial release to key areas
of lymphatic congestion.
Counterstrain is a
passive technique in
which a tenderpoint is
located and the body is
positioned in a way
Counterstrain that greatly reduces
tenderness and held in
that position for 90
seconds or until a
release of the tissues
occurs.
Points and
Positioning
HVLA is a passive, direct
technique which uses a
rapid therapeutic force
that travels a short
distance within the
anatomic range of motion
High Velocity of a joint and engages the
restrictive barrier in one
Low or more planes of motion.
Amplitude
(HVLA)
“According to
Sutherland’s model, all
the joints in the body
are balanced
ligamentous articular
mechanisms. The
ligaments provide
Balanced proprioceptive
information that guides
Ligamentous the muscle response for
positioning the joint,
Tension (BLT) and the ligaments
themselves guide the
motion of the articular
components.”

What might
we do for
these patients
with OMT?
What about these
guys?
This is how
we do it…
● We work on a specific technique by region
● You should prepare by listening to the associated self-study and
watching all the related videos before the lab
The OMM Lab ● You will work with each other in pairs, and your pairs will be in
pods (8 people)
Process ● You will receive specific instructions, demonstrations, and time
to practice in lab
● You should practice regularly with your friends and family and
in TLC or Student Run Free Clinic (SRFC)
● Get a history and physical exam
● Add an Osteopathic Structural Exam
● Assessment
An ● Plan
● Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment that is a combination of:
Osteopathic ● Soft Tissue
● Muscle Energy
● Myofascial Release
Treatment ● Lymphatic Techniques
● Counterstrain
● HVLA
● OCMM
● And many more…
